    UNDERSTANDING THE SCALAR MESON qqˉq\bar q NONET

    It is shown that one can fit the available data on the a0(980), f0(980), f0(1300) and K*0(1430) mesons as a distorted 0++ qq bar nonet using very few (5-6) parameters and an improved version of the unitarized quark model. This includes all light two-pseudoscalar thresholds, constraints from Adler zeroes, flavour symmetric couplings, unitarity and physically acceptable analyticity. The parameters include a bare uu bar or dd bar mass, an over-all coupling constant, a cutoff and a strange quark mass of 100 MeV, which is in accord with expectations from the quark model. It is found that in particular for the a0(980) and f0(980) the KK bar component in the wave function is large, i.e., for a large fraction of the time the qq bar state is transformed into a virtual KK bar pair. This KK bar component, together with a similar component of eta' pi for the a0(980) , and eta eta, eta eta' and eta' eta' components for the f0(980), causes the substantial shift to a lower mass than what is naively expected from the qq bar component alone.     A new Perspective on the Scalar meson Puzzle, from Spontaneous Chiral Symmetry Breaking Beyond BCS

    We introduce coupled channels of Bethe-Salpeter mesons both in the boundstate equation for mesons and in the mass gap equation for chiral symmetry. Consistency is insured by the Ward Identities for axial currents, which preserve the Goldstone boson nature of the pion and prevents a systematic shift of the hadron spectrum. We study the decay of a scalar meson coupled to a pair of pseudoscalars. We also show that coupled channels reduce the breaking of chiral symmetry, with the same Feynman diagrams that appear in the coupling of a scalar meson to a pair of pseudoscalar mesons. Exact calculations are performed in a particular confining quark model, where we find that the groundstate I=0,3P0qqˉI=0, ^3P_0 q \bar q meson is the f_0(980) with a partial decay width of 40MeV. We also find a 30% reduction of the chiral condensate due to coupled channels.Comment: 17 pages, Revtex, 8 eps figures, and several eps diagrams in equation

    Finite temperature spectral functions of the linear O(N)-model at large N applied to the πσ\pi -\sigma system

    The thermal evolution of the spectral densities derivable from the two-point functions of the elementary and the quadratic composite fields of the O(N) model is studied in the isosinglet channel and in the broken symmetry phase at infinite N. The results are applied with realistic parameter values to the N=4 case. They provide a reasonable description of the σ\sigma meson at T=0. Threshold enhancement is observed around T1.07mπT\sim 1.07m_\pi. For higher temperatures the maximum of the spectral function in the single meson channel decreases and becomes increasingly rounded.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.     The upper limit of the e+e- partial width of X(3872)

    The e+e- decay partial width of the recently observed state, X(3872), is estimated using the ISR data collected at the center of mass energy 4.03 GeV in e+e- annihilation experiment by BES at BEPC. It is found that the product of the e+e- partial width and X(3872) --> pi+ pi- J/psi decay branching fraction is less than 10 eV at 90 % confidence level if the J(PC) of X(3872) is 1(--). Together with the potential models and other information, we conclude that X(3872) is very unlikely to be a vector state.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Chiral Approach to Weak Radiative Hyperon Decays and the Ξ0>Λγ\Xi^0 --> \Lambda \gamma Asymmetry

    We reanalyse the recent version of the chiral model of weak radiative hyperon decays, proposed by Borasoy and Holstein. It is shown that predictions of the analysed model are significantly changed when one accepts the usual classification of Λ(1405)\Lambda (1405) as an SU(3)-singlet. In particular, for the Ξ0Λγ\Xi ^0 \to \Lambda \gamma decay large negative asymmetry is obtained. This is contrasted with the Hara's-theorem-violating approaches where this asymmetry is large and positive.Comment: 15 LaTeX pages, 1 ps figur

    DCC dynamics with the SU(3) linear sigma model

    The SU(3) extension of the linear sigma model is employed to elucidate the effect of including strangeness on the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. By means of a Hartree factorization, approximate dispersion relations for the 18 scalar and pseudoscalar meson species are derived and their self-consistent solution makes it possible to trace out the thermal path of the two order parameters as well as delineate the region of instability within which spontaneous pair creation becomes possible. The results depend significantly on the employed sigma mass, with the highest values yielding the largest regions of instability. An approximate solution of the equations of motion for the order parameter in scenarios emulating uniform scaling expansions show that even with a rapid quench only the pionic modes grow unstable. Nevertheless, the rapid and oscillatory relaxation of the order parameters leads to enhanced production of both pions and (to a lesser degree) kaons.Comment: 29 pages, RevTeX, 11 postscript figures, discussion about anomaly term adde

    Scalar meson properties from D-meson decays

    Decay amplitudes of D(D_s)->f0(980)X, X=pi, K, are compared to experimental branching ratios with the aim of singling out the poorly known D->f0(980) transition form factor in these amplitudes. Since the other elements of the amplitudes are either calculable in an effective QCD theory using operator product expansion or are known from experiment (e.g. the pion and kaon decay constants), we can take advantage of these reactions to constrain the transition form factors obtained in relativistic quark models. In these models, the f0(980) wavefunction requires an unknown size parameter for both its non-strange ubar u(dbar d) and strange sbar s components, which we fit to the D(D_s) decay data.Comment: Talk given at the Few Body 18 conference in Santos, Brazil. 4 pages, to be published in Nuclear Physics

    Mechanism for a next-to-lowest lying scalar meson nonet

    Recent work suggests the existence of a non-conventional lowest-lying scalar nonet containing the a0(980). Then the a0(1450) and also the K0*(1430) are likely candidates to belong to a conventional p-wave qqˉq \bar q nonet. However a comparison of their properties with those expected on this basis reveals a number of puzzling features. It is pointed out that these puzzles can be resolved in a natural and robust way by assuming a ``bare'' conventional p-wave scalar qqˉq \bar q nonet to mix with a lighter four quark qqqˉqˉqq \bar q \bar q scalar nonet to form new ``physical'' states. The essential mechanism is driven by the fact that the isospinor is lighter than the isovector in the unmixed qqqˉqˉqq \bar q \bar q multiplet.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

    Neurological Disease Detection and Monitoring from Voice Production

    The dramatic impact of neurological degenerative pathologies in life quality is a growing concern. It is well known that many neurological diseases leave a fingerprint in voice and speech production. Many techniques have been designed for the detection, diagnose and monitoring the neurological disease. Most of them are costly or difficult to extend to primary attention medical services. Through the present paper it will be shown how some neurological diseases can be traced at the level of phonation. The detection procedure would be based on a simple voice test. The availability of advanced tools and methodologies to monitor the organic pathology of voice would facilitate the implantation of these tests. The paper hypothesizes that some of the underlying mechanisms affecting the production of voice produce measurable correlates in vocal fold biomechanics. A general description of the methodological foundations for the voice analysis system which can estimate correlates to the neurological disease is shown.     Another look at ππ\pi\pi scattering in the scalar channel

    We set up a general framework to describe ππ\pi\pi scattering below 1 GeV based on chiral low-energy expansion with possible spin-0 and 1 resonances. Partial wave amplitudes are obtained with the N/DN/D method, which satisfy unitarity, analyticity and approximate crossing symmetry. Comparison with the phase shift data in the J=0 channel favors a scalar resonance near the ρ\rho mass.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, REVTe
