    ORAL CREATINE SUPPLEMENTATION AND SHORT-TERM DYNAMIC POWER PRODUCTION IN HEALTHY YOUNG MEN

    This experiment examined the effect of creatine monohydrate supplementation on corrected peak power output and peak acceleration during repeated, high intensity sprint cycling. The investigation was randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind and adopted a crossover design. Eight male, adult volunteers participated in this study. Subjects were administered with creatine monohydrate (0.28g.kg-1 per day) or a glucose placebo. Following experimental treatments, subjects underwent 10 maximal effort, 6-s sprints on a cycle ergometer with a work to rest ratio of 5:1. The exercise protocol was fatiguing in nature with peak power output and peak acceleration decreasing significantly from the first to last sprint. Creatine supplementation significantly attenuated the decline in peak power output in the latter stages of the intermittent sprint cycling

    Measurement of muscle health in aging

    Muscle health is a critical component in the struggle against physical frailty and the efforts to maintain metabolic health until the limit of chronological age. Consensus opinion is to evaluate muscle health in terms of muscle mass, strength and functional capability. There has been considerable variability in the components of muscle health which have been investigated in addition to variability in the tools of assessment and protocol for measurement. This is in stark contrast to the validated measurement of bone health across the adult life span. The purpose of this review was to identify indices of muscle mass, strength and functional capability most responsive to change with ageing and where possible to provide an estimate of the rate of change. We suggest lean tissue mass (LTM) or skeletal muscle (SM) is best evaluated from the thigh region due to its greater responsiveness to ageing compared to the whole body. The anterior compartment of the thigh region undergoes a preferential age-related decline in SM and force generating capacity. Therefore, we suggest that knee extensor torque is measured to represent the force generating capacity of the thigh and subsequently, to express muscle quality (strength per unit tissue). Finally, we suggest measures of functional capability which allow participants perform to a greater maximum are most appropriate to track age-related difference in functional capacity across the adult lifespan. This is due to their ability encompass a broad spectrum of abilities. This review suggests indices of muscular health for which reference ranges can be generated across the lifespan

    Potential for using simulated altitude as a means of prehabilitation:a physiology study

    The current pandemic of surgical complications necessitates urgent and pragmatic innovation to reduce postoperative morbidity and mortality, which are associated with poor pre-operative fitness and anaemia. Exercise prehabilitation is a compelling strategy, but it has proven difficult to establish that it improves outcomes either in isolation or as part of a multimodal approach. Simulated altitude exposure improves performance in athletes and offers a novel potential means of improving cardiorespiratory and metabolic fitness and alleviating anaemia within the prehabilitation window. We aimed to provide an initial physiological foundation for ‘altitude prehabilitation’ by determining the physiological effects of one week of simulated altitude (FIO2 15%, equivalent to approximately 2438 m (8000 ft)) in older sedentary volunteers. The study used a randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled crossover design. Eight participants spent counterbalanced normoxic and hypoxic weeks in a residential hypoxia facility and underwent repeated cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Mean (SD) age of participants was 64 (7) y and they were unfit, with mean (SD) baseline anaerobic threshold 12 (2) ml.kg-1.min-1 and mean (SD) peak V̇O2 15 (3) ml.kg-1.min-1. Hypoxia was mild (mean (SD) SpO2 93 (2) %, p &lt; 0.001) and well-tolerated. Despite some indication of greater peak exercise capacity following hypoxia, overall there was no effect of simulated altitude on anaerobic threshold or peak V̇O2. However, hypoxia induced a substantial increase in mean (SD) haemoglobin of 1.5 (2.7) g.dl-1 (13% increase, p = 0.028). This study has established the concept and feasibility of ‘altitude prehabilitation’ and demonstrated specific potential for improving haematological fitness. Physiologically, there is value in exploring a possible role for simulated altitude in pre-operative optimisation.</p

    Raman Spectroscopy of the Human Nail: A Potential Tool for Evaluating Bone Health?

    Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. However, patients can suffer osteoporotic fractures despite normal bone mineral density, partly because of unmeasured influences of both the protein and mineral phases of bone that are affected in osteoporosis. There is currently no clinically applicable method of evaluating the health of the protein phase. The proteins in human nail (keratin) and bone (collagen) require sulphation and disulphide bond (S-S) formation for structural integrity and disorders of either sulphur metabolism or cystathione beta-synthase can lead to structural abnormalities in these tissues. Raman protein spectra provide a method of non-invasive measurement of the degree of sulphation of structurally related proteins that may be indicative of bone health. Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate the disulphide (S-S) content of fingernails. The nail samples came from from 169 women (84 pre- and 85 post-menopausal), of which 39 had a history of osteoporotic fracture. BMD was measured by DXA at the spine. Analyses included parametric and non-parametric tests, dependent on the distribution of the test variable. Mean disulphide content of the nail reduced with age and was slightly higher in pre-, compared to post-menopausal women (P = 0.187). Significantly lower disulphide content was observed in nails obtained from subjects with a history of fracture (P = 0.025). When either disulphide content or BMD was used as a predictor, the odds ratio of these two measures were found to be comparable predictors for fracture status. This suggests that measurements of change in the protein phase of structural proteins such as keratin in the human nail may be correlated with clinically relevant changes in bone proteins that are important in fracture risk. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

    Statistical features of edge turbulence in RFX-mod from Gas Puffing Imaging

    Plasma density fluctuations in the edge plasma of the RFX-mod device are measured through the Gas Puffing Imaging Diagnostics. Statistical features of the signal are quantified in terms of the Probability Distribution Function (PDF), and computed for several kinds of discharges. The PDFs from discharges without particular control methods are found to be adequately described by a Gamma function, consistently with the recent results by Graves et al [J.P. Graves, et al, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 47, L1 (2005)]. On the other hand, pulses with external methods for plasma control feature modified PDFs. A first empirical analysis suggests that they may be interpolated through a linear combination of simple functions. An inspection of the literature shows that this kind of PDFs is common to other devices as well, and has been suggested to be due to the simultaneous presence of different mechanisms driving respectively coherent bursts and gaussian background turbulence. An attempt is made to relate differences in the PDFs to plasma conditions such as the local shift of the plasma column. A simple phenomenological model to interpret the nature of the PDF and assign a meaning to its parameters is also developed.Comment: 27 pages. Published in PPC

    Bernoulli potential in type-I and weak type-II superconductors: I. Surface charge

    The electrostatic potential close to the surface of superconductors in the Meissner state is discussed. We show that beside the Bernoulli potential, the quasiparticle screening, and the thermodynamic contribution due to Rickayzen, there is a non-local contribution which is large for both type-I and weak type-II superconductors.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Intensity distribution for waves in disordered media: deviations from Rayleigh statistics

    We study the intensity distribution function, P(I), for monochromatic waves propagating in quasi one-dimensional disordered medium, assuming that a point source and a point detector are embedded in the bulk of the medium. We find deviations from the Rayleigh statistics at moderately large I and a logarithmically-normal asymptotic behavior of P(I). When the radiation source and the detector are located close to the opposite edges of the sample (on a distance much less then the sample length), an intermediate regime with a stretched-exponential behavior of P(I) emerges.Comment: 4 pages Revtex, 3 figures included as eps file

    Quantum and Classical Noise in Practical Quantum Cryptography Systems based on polarization-entangled photons

    Quantum-cryptography key distribution (QCKD) experiments have been recently reported using polarization-entangled photons. However, in any practical realization, quantum systems suffer from either unwanted or induced interactions with the environment and the quantum measurement system, showing up as quantum and, ultimately, statistical noise. In this paper, we investigate how ideal polarization entanglement in spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) suffers quantum noise in its practical implementation as a secure quantum system, yielding errors in the transmitted bit sequence. Because all SPDC-based QCKD schemes rely on the measurement of coincidence to assert the bit transmission between the two parties, we bundle up the overall quantum and statistical noise in an exhaustive model to calculate the accidental coincidences. This model predicts the quantum-bit error rate and the sifted key and allows comparisons between different security criteria of the hitherto proposed QCKD protocols, resulting in an objective assessment of performances and advantages of different systems.Comment: Rev Tex Style, 2 columns, 7 figures, (a modified version will appear on PRA
