    Diffusion in an age-structured randomly switching environment

    Age-structured processes are well-established in population biology, where birth and death rates often depend on the age of the underlying populations. Recently, however, different examples of age-structured processes have been considered in the context of cell motility or certain types of stochastically gated ion channels, where the state of the system is determined by a switching process with age-dependent transition rates. In this paper we consider the particular problem of diffusion on a finite interval, with randomly switching boundary conditions due to the presence of an age-structured stochastic gate at one end of the interval. When the gate is closed the particles are reflected, whereas when it is open the domain is in contact with a particle bath. We use a moments method to derive a partial differential equation for the expectations of the stochastic concentration, conditioned on the state of the gate. We then use transform methods to eliminate the residence time of the age-structured switching, resulting in non-Markovian equations for the expectations, and determine the effective steady-state concentration gradient. Our analytical results are shown to match those obtained using Monte Carlo simulations

    Thurstonian Scaling of Compositional Questionnaire Data

    To prevent response biases, personality questionnaires may use comparative response formats. These include forced choice, where respondents choose among a number of items, and quantitative comparisons, where respondents indicate the extent to which items are preferred to each other. The present article extends Thurstonian modeling of binary choice data (Brown & Maydeu-Olivares, 2011a) to “proportion-of-total” (compositional) formats. Following Aitchison (1982), compositional item data are transformed into log-ratios, conceptualized as differences of latent item utilities. The mean and covariance structure of the log-ratios is modelled using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), where the item utilities are first-order factors, and personal attributes measured by a questionnaire are second-order factors. A simulation study with two sample sizes, N=300 and N=1000, shows that the method provides very good recovery of true parameters and near-nominal rejection rates. The approach is illustrated with empirical data from N=317 students, comparing model parameters obtained with compositional and Likert scale versions of a Big Five measure. The results show that the proposed model successfully captures the latent structures and person scores on the measured traits

    SW England Rare Earth Elements (REE) Stream Sediment Dataset user guide

    This report describes how 3378 stream sediment samples collected between 2002 and 2013 across SW England by the BGS G-BASE project were analysed to determine the total concentration of 16 rare earth elements (REE)by inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS). It documents the methods used to process and display the resultant chemical data. The analytical results were used to create a series of raster (ASCII format) grids and interpolated geochemical maps (PNG images) showing the distribution of REE across SW England

    Neutron stars and strange stars in the chiral SU(3) quark mean field model

    We investigate the equations of state for pure neutron matter and strange hadronic matter in ÎČ\beta-equilibrium, including Λ\Lambda, ÎŁ\Sigma and Ξ\Xi hyperons. The masses and radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are obtained. For a pure neutron star, the maximum mass is about 1.8Msun1.8 M_{\mathrm{sun}}, while for a strange hadronic star, the maximum mass is around 1.45Msun1.45 M_{\mathrm{sun}}. The typical radii of pure neutron stars and strange hadronic stars are about 11.0-12.3 km and 10.7-11.7 km, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Agreeing on meaning: a fundamental sharing of health information

    Topic: A preliminary study on the reproducibility of results when mapping terms from an existing terminology to SNOMED CT post-coordinated expressions is described. Background: Implementing SNOMED CT requires a strategy for migrating existing systems and data that currently use other terminologies as well as ensuring that SNOMED CT contains suitable content that covers the domain. Mapping terms from these terminologies to SNOMED CT is one element of such a strategy. Snapper is a tool designed to assist in this complex task and enable the creation of quality mappings. Methods: Ten terms from the ANZICS diagnosis codes were selected to be mapped according to specified guidelines. The resulting mapping expressions were compared with each other and discussions were conducted with the mapping participants to determine issues they encountered during the process. Results: Consistency was easily achievable with mapping to single concepts, but was more difficult when mapping to post-coordinated expressions. The difficulties were traced to a lack of specificity in the supplied guidelines resulting in uncertainty in structuring the representation of compound concepts

    Heavy Rydberg behaviour and absolute quantum defects are reported for resonances in the ungerade manifold of H2 above the (1s, 3l) dissociation limit. The continuity of the vibrational progression of the B\u27\u27B-bar state through the crossing with the 3p asymptote is demonstrated and a predominantly diabatic picture of the vibrational motion emerges, indicating that the ion-pair resonances possess little 61ÎŁu+ state character

    Barriers to Remote Health Interventions for Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Proposed Classification Scheme

    BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management involves adherence to healthy daily habits typically involving blood glucose monitoring, medication, exercise, and diet. To support self-management, some providers have begun testing remote interventions for monitoring and assisting patients between clinic visits. Although some studies have shown success, there are barriers to widespread adoption. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to identify and classify barriers to adoption of remote health for management of type 2 diabetes. METHODS: The following 6 electronic databases were searched for articles published from 2010 to 2015: MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Northern Light Life Sciences Conference Abstracts, and Scopus (Elsevier). The search identified studies involving remote technologies for type 2 diabetes self-management. Reviewers worked in teams of 2 to review and extract data from identified papers. Information collected included study characteristics, outcomes, dropout rates, technologies used, and barriers identified. RESULTS: A total of 53 publications on 41 studies met the specified criteria. Lack of data accuracy due to input bias (32%, 13/41), limitations on scalability (24%, 10/41), and technology illiteracy (24%, 10/41) were the most commonly cited barriers. Technology illiteracy was most prominent in low-income populations, whereas limitations on scalability were more prominent in mid-income populations. Barriers identified were applied to a conceptual model of successful remote health, which includes patient engagement, patient technology accessibility, quality of care, system technology cost, and provider productivity. In total, 40.5% (60/148) of identified barrier instances impeded patient engagement, which is manifest in the large dropout rates cited (up to 57%). CONCLUSIONS: The barriers identified represent major challenges in the design of remote health interventions for diabetes. Breakthrough technologies and systems are needed to alleviate the barriers identified so far, particularly those associated with patient engagement. Monitoring devices that provide objective and reliable data streams on medication, exercise, diet, and glucose monitoring will be essential for widespread effectiveness. Additional work is needed to understand root causes of high dropout rates, and new interventions are needed to identify and assist those at the greatest risk of dropout. Finally, future studies must quantify costs and benefits to determine financial sustainability
