First- and second-time parents’ couple relationship: from pregnancy to second year postpartum
First- and second-time parents’ couple relationships were studied from early pregnancy to the second year postpartum. The Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) was administered to Portuguese couples (N = 82), first- or second-time parents, at the first, second and third pregnancy trimester, childbirth, 3 and 18 months postpartum. Adverse changes in positive and negative partner relationship dimensions were reported from early pregnancy to the second year postpartum by all participants; in the same way by mothers and fathers and by first- and second-time parents. Second-time parents reported a worse couple relationship (lower RQ-positive scores) than first-time parents, but only during pregnancy. A Statistical Prescription to Estimate Properly Normalized Distributions of Different Particle Species
We describe a statistical method to avoid biased estimation of the content of
different particle species. We consider the case when the particle
identification information strongly depends on some kinematical variables,
whose distributions are unknown and different for each particles species. We
show that the proposed procedure provides properly normalized and completely
data-driven estimation of the unknown distributions without any a priori
assumption on their functional form. Moreover, we demonstrate that the method
can be generalized to any kinematical distribution of the particles
Thermal Phase Variations of WASP-12b: Defying Predictions
[Abridged] We report Warm Spitzer full-orbit phase observations of WASP-12b
at 3.6 and 4.5 micron. We are able to measure the transit depths, eclipse
depths, thermal and ellipsoidal phase variations at both wavelengths. The large
amplitude phase variations, combined with the planet's previously-measured
day-side spectral energy distribution, is indicative of non-zero Bond albedo
and very poor day-night heat redistribution. The transit depths in the
mid-infrared indicate that the atmospheric opacity is greater at 3.6 than at
4.5 micron, in disagreement with model predictions, irrespective of C/O ratio.
The secondary eclipse depths are consistent with previous studies. We do not
detect ellipsoidal variations at 3.6 micron, but our parameter uncertainties
-estimated via prayer-bead Monte Carlo- keep this non-detection consistent with
model predictions. At 4.5 micron, on the other hand, we detect ellipsoidal
variations that are much stronger than predicted. If interpreted as a geometric
effect due to the planet's elongated shape, these variations imply a 3:2 ratio
for the planet's longest:shortest axes and a relatively bright day-night
terminator. If we instead presume that the 4.5 micron ellipsoidal variations
are due to uncorrected systematic noise and we fix the amplitude of the
variations to zero, the best fit 4.5 micron transit depth becomes commensurate
with the 3.6 micron depth, within the uncertainties. The relative transit
depths are then consistent with a Solar composition and short scale height at
the terminator. Assuming zero ellipsoidal variations also yields a much deeper
4.5 micron eclipse depth, consistent with a Solar composition and modest
temperature inversion. We suggest future observations that could distinguish

Large magnetic circular dichroism in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Mn L-edge of Mn-Zn ferrite
We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) excited by circularly
polarized x-rays on Mn-Zn ferrite at the Mn L2,3-resonances. We demonstrate
that crystal field excitations, as expected for localized systems, dominate the
RIXS spectra and thus their dichroic asymmetry cannot be interpreted in terms
of spin-resolved partial density of states, which has been the standard
approach for RIXS dichroism. We observe large dichroic RIXS at the L2-resonance
which we attribute to the absence of metallic core hole screening in the
insulating Mn-ferrite. On the other hand, reduced L3-RIXS dichroism is
interpreted as an effect of longer scattering time that enables spin-lattice
core hole relaxation via magnons and phonons occurring on a femtosecond time

All-optical switching in a two-channel waveguide with cubic-quintic nonlinearity
We consider dynamics of spatial beams in a dual-channel waveguide with
competing cubic and quintic (CQ) nonlinearities. Gradually increasing the power
in the input channel, we identify four different regimes of the pulses coupling
into the cross channel, which alternate three times between full pass and full
stop, thus suggesting three realizations of switching between the channels. As
in the case of the Kerr (solely cubic) nonlinearity, the first two regimes are
the linear one, and one dominated by the self-focusing nonlinearity, with the
beam which, respectively, periodically couples between the channels, or stays
in the input channel. Further increase of the power reveals two novel
transmission regimes, one characterized by balance between the competing
nonlinearities, which again allows full coupling between the channels, and a
final regime dominated by the self-defocusing quintic nonlinearity. In the
latter case, the situation resembles that known for a self-repulsive
Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential, which is
characterized by strong symmetry breaking; accordingly, the beam again abides
in the input channel, contrary to an intuitive expectation that the
self-defocusing nonlinearity would push it into the cross channel. The
numerical results are qualitatively explained by a simple analytical model

Anisotropy of Polarized X-ray Emission from Molecules
Strongly anisotropic, polarized Cl K-V x-ray emission from gas-phase CF3Cl has been observed following resonant excitation with a linearly polarized x-ray beam. Distinctively different angular distributions are observed for x-ray emission involving molecular orbitals of different symmetries. A classical model of the x-ray absorption-emission process accurately describes the observed radiation patterns
Current Account and External Financing
This article summarizes the most salient aspects of papers presented at the Central Bank of Chile’s Tenth Annual Conference “Current Account and External Financing” held in November 2006 and soon to be edited into an upcoming book. Many works were included oriented to improve understanding of recent trends and behavior of international financial markets and emerging economies participating in said markets. The papers, that cover both theoretical and empirical aspects, contribute elements to the comprehension of macroeconomic management in a small open economy, taking into account the main changes observed in recent years in matters relating with financial integration.
