Another self-similar blast wave: Early time asymptote with shock heated electrons and high thermal conductivity
Accurate approximations are presented for the self-similar structures of nonradiating blast waves with adiabatic ions, isothermal electrons, and equation ion and electron temperatures at the shock. The cases considered evolve in cavities with power law ambient densities (including the uniform density case) and have negligible external pressure. The results provide the early time asymptote for systems with shock heating of electrons and strong thermal conduction. In addition, they provide analytical results against which two fluid numerical hydrodynamic codes can be checked
Nonthermal X-Ray Emission from G266.2-1.2 (RX J0852.0-4622)
The newly discovered supernova remnant G266.2-1.2 (RX J0852.0-4622), along
the line of sight to the Vela SNR, was observed with ASCA for 120 ks. We find
that the X-ray spectrum is featureless, and well described by a power law,
extending to three the class of shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal X-ray
emission. Although the presence of the Vela SNR compromises our ability to
accurately determine the column density, the GIS data appear to indicate
absorption considerably in excess of that for Vela itself, indicating that
G266.2-1.2 may be several times more distant. An unresolved central source may
be an associated neutron star, though difficulties with this interpretation

Obtaining a class of Type O pure radiation metrics with a cosmological constant, using invariant operators
Using the generalised invariant formalism we derive a class of conformally
flat spacetimes whose Ricci tensor has a pure radiation and a Ricci scalar
component. The method used is a development of the methods used earlier for
pure radiation spacetimes of Petrov types O and N respectively. In this paper
we demonstrate how to handle, in the generalised invariant formalism,
spacetimes with isotropy freedom and rich Killing vector structure. Once the
spacetimes have been constructed, it is straightforward to deduce their
Karlhede classification: the Karlhede algorithm terminates at the fourth
derivative order, and the spacetimes all have one degree of null isotropy and
three, four or five Killing vectors.Comment: 29 page

Healthy shopper? Blood pressure testing in a shopping centre Pop-Up in England
Background: Improving detection of elevated blood pressure (BP) remains a public health need. We present results from a Pop-Up health check stationed in shopping centres in England. We hypothesise the rate of case detection is related to measurable ‘unhealthiness’ of the shopping centres.
Methods: A Pop-Up health check was sited in four and three shopping centres sampled from the top ten unhealthiest and top 15 healthiest shopping regions respectively, following a report ranking towns/cities based on their unhealthy and healthy retail outlets. On one day in each shopping centre, people were approached and consented to BP testing. Outcome measure was people flagged with BP ≥ 140/90 mmHg (cases).
Results: We detected 45 (22.6%) and 20 (13.1%) cases from testing 199 and 152 adults in the unhealthy and healthy locations respectively (relative risk 1.72; 95% confidence interval: 1.06 to 2.78). A measure of unhealthy retail outlets (e.g. fast-food outlets) within each shopping centre was associated with detection rate (R2 = 0.61; p = 0.04).
Conclusion: An association exists between cases of suspect hypertension found in a health check Pop-Up and measured ‘unhealthiness’ of the shopping centre site. Results hint at strategies for public testing of BP, potentially in the context of reducing health inequalities
Invariant classification and the generalised invariant formalism: conformally flat pure radiation metrics, with zero cosmological constant
Metrics obtained by integrating within the generalised invariant formalism
are structured around their intrinsic coordinates, and this considerably
simplifies their invariant classification and symmetry analysis. We illustrate
this by presenting a simple and transparent complete invariant classification
of the conformally flat pure radiation metrics (except plane waves) in such
intrinsic coordinates; in particular we confirm that the three apparently
non-redundant functions of one variable are genuinely non-redundant, and easily
identify the subclasses which admit a Killing and/or a homothetic Killing
vector. Most of our results agree with the earlier classification carried out
by Skea in the different Koutras-McIntosh coordinates, which required much more
involved calculations; but there are some subtle differences. Therefore, we
also rework the classification in the Koutras-McIntosh coordinates, and by
paying attention to some of the subtleties involving arbitrary functions, we
are able to obtain complete agreement with the results obtained in intrinsic
coordinates. In particular, we have corrected and completed statements and
results by Edgar and Vickers, and by Skea, about the orders of Cartan

Feeling the pressure: a cross-sectional study exploring feasibility of a healthcare Pop-Up for intraocular pressure measurements in shopping centres in England
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that a shopping centre Pop-Up health check combining an intraocular pressure (IOP) check with a general health check (blood pressure (BP)) is more readily accepted by the general public than an IOP check only. We investigate public awareness of IOP compared with BP and the feasibility of measuring IOP in large numbers in a Pop-Up. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study using a tailor-made healthcare Pop-Up. SETTING: The 'Feeling the Pressure' Pop-Up was sited in eight regionally-different shopping centres in England. PARTICIPANTS: Adult members of the public in shopping centres. METHODS: On one day we measured IOP only and on another measured BP and IOP. IOP was measured by Icare IC100 tonometer (Helsinki, Finland). Potential participants were asked about their awareness of IOP and BP and when they last visited their optometrist. RESULTS: More people attended the combined BP + IOP days (461; 60%; 95% CI 56% to 64%) than IOP-only days (307; 40%, 95% CI 37% to 43%) over 16 days of testing. We recorded IOP in 652 participants (median (IQR) age and IOP of 54 (42 to 68) years and 13 (11 to 15) mm Hg, respectively). Fewer people reported awareness about IOP (19%, 95% CI 16% to 23%) compared with BP (71%, 95% CI 66% to 75%). Of 768 participants, 60 (8%) reported no previous optometric eye examination and 185 (24%) reported >2 years since their most recent examination. CONCLUSIONS: Measuring IOP in large numbers of the public via a shopping centre Pop-Up is feasible. Public engagement was greater when a BP check was offered alongside an IOP check, suggesting unfamiliar health checks can be promoted by aligning them with a more familiar check. Our findings hint at strategies for public health schemes that engage the public with their eye health
New biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic and isotopic insights into the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum in low latitudes
The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO) was a warming event that interrupted the long-term Eocene cooling trend. While this event is well documented at high southern and mid-latitudes, it is poorly known from low latitudes and its timing and duration are not well constrained because of problems of hiati, microfossil preservation and weak magnetic polarity in key sedimentary sections. Here, we report the results of a study designed to improve the bio-, magneto- and chemostratigraphy of the MECO interval using high-resolution records from two low-latitude sections in the Atlantic Ocean, Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 1051 and 1260. We present the first detailed benthic foraminiferal stable isotope records of the MECO from the low latitudes as well as the biostratigraphic counts of Orbulinoides beckmanni and new magnetostratigraphic results. Our data demonstrate a ~ 750 kyr-long duration for the MECO characterized by increasing δ13C and decreasing δ18O, with minimum δ18O values lasting ~ 40 kyr at 40.1 Ma coincident with a short-lived negative δ13C excursion. Thereafter, δ18O and δ13C values recover rapidly. The shift to minimum δ18O values at 40.1 Ma is coincident with a marked increase in the abundance of the planktonic foraminifera O. beckmanni, consistent with its inferred warm-water preference. O. beckmanni is an important Eocene biostratigraphic marker, defining planktonic foraminiferal Zone E12 with its lowest and highest occurrences (LO and HOs). Our new records reveal that the LO of O. beckmanni is distinctly diachronous, appearing ~ 500 kyr earlier in the equatorial Atlantic than in the subtropics (40.5 versus 41.0 Ma). We also show that, at both sites, the HO of O. beckmanni at 39.5 Ma is younger than the published calibrations, increasing the duration of Zone E12 by at least 400 kyr. In accordance with the tropical origins of O. beckmanni, this range expansion to higher latitudes may have occurred in response to sea surface warming during the MECO and subsequently disappeared with cooling of surface waters
Interpreting a conformally flat pure radiation space-time
A physical interpretation is presented of the general class of conformally
flat pure radiation metrics that has recently been identified by Edgar and
Ludwig. It is shown that, at least in the weak field limit, successive wave
surfaces can be represented as null (half) hyperplanes rolled around a
two-dimensional null cone. In the impulsive limit, the solution reduces to a
pp-wave whose direction of propagation depends on retarded time. In the general
case, there is a coordinate singularity which corresponds to an envelope of the
wave surfaces. The global structure is discussed and a possible vacuum
