    K3-fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds I, the twist map

A construction of Calabi-Yaus as quotients of products of lower-dimensional spaces in the context of weighted hypersurfaces is discussed, including desingularisation. The construction leads to Calabi-Yaus which have a fiber structure, in particular one case has K3 surfaces as fibers. These Calabi-Yaus are of some interest in connection with Type II -heterotic string dualities in dimension 4. A section at the end of the paper summarises this for the non-expert mathematician.Comment: 31 pages LaTeX, 11pt, 2 figures. To appear in International Journal of Mathematics. Peculiarities of manifestation of peak special strength in beginner armwrestlers of various weight categories

    Get PDF
The comparison of the test rates of armwrestlers of the middle and heavy weight categories showed that the greatest difference between the mean strength values, above 100%, was found in the forearm pronators, above 90% - in the forearm supinators (p<0.01), above 38% - in the shoulder extensors (p<0.01); the smallest - in the finger flexors (5.1%), supine forearm flexors (16.6%), and hand flexors (17.6%). The findings indicate that the difference in the special strength fitness rates in beginner armwrestlers of various weight categories is less significant than that of qualified athlete

This paper reveals the system of medical and pedagogical support of students' health in the educational process of the Belgorod State National Research University. It is argued that this system includes the target, substantial, operational, and productive components. A special place is given to disclosing the content of the activities of the University Center for a person's functional state correctio

The Physics of Ultraperipheral Collisions at the LHC

    Get PDF
We discuss the physics of large impact parameter interactions at the LHC: ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). The dominant processes in UPCs are photon-nucleon (nucleus) interactions. The current LHC detector configurations can explore small xx hard phenomena with nuclei and nucleons at photon-nucleon center-of-mass energies above 1 TeV, extending the xx range of HERA by a factor of ten. In particular, it will be possible to probe diffractive and inclusive parton densities in nuclei using several processes. The interaction of small dipoles with protons and nuclei can be investigated in elastic and quasi-elastic J/ψJ/\psi and Υ\Upsilon production as well as in high tt ρ0\rho^0 production accompanied by a rapidity gap. Several of these phenomena provide clean signatures of the onset of the new high gluon density QCD regime. The LHC is in the kinematic range where nonlinear effects are several times larger than at HERA. Two-photon processes in UPCs are also studied. In addition, while UPCs play a role in limiting the maximum beam luminosity, they can also be used a luminosity monitor by measuring mutual electromagnetic dissociation of the beam nuclei. We also review similar studies at HERA and RHIC as well as describe the potential use of the LHC detectors for UPC measurements.Comment: 229 Pages, 121 figure

Gadolinium-based hybrid ultra-low-background material for protecting the darkside20k dark matter detector from background neutrons

    Get PDF
A laboratory technique was developed for obtaining an ultra-low-background hybrid material based on organic glass - polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). 157Gd nuclei are used as an efficient absorber of thermal neutrons in the hybrid material. A uniform distribution of gadolinium in the PMMAmatrix is achieved by introducing he gadolinium in the form of a coordination compound -gadolinium acetylacetonate- into the hybrid materia

Measurement of the Pion Form Factor in the Energy Range 1.04-1.38 GeV with the CMD-2 Detector

The cross section for the process e+eπ+πe^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^- is measured in the c.m. energy range 1.04-1.38 GeV from 995 000 selected collinear events including 860000 e+ee^+e^- events, 82000 μ+μ\mu^+\mu^- events, and 33000 π+π\pi^+\pi^- events. The systematic and statistical errors of measuring the pion form factor are equal to 1.2-4.2 and 5-13%, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
