Broadband dielectric response of glycerol and propylene carbonate: a comparison
Dielectric data on glycerol and propylene carbonate covering 18 decades of
frequency are presented and compared to each other. Both materials exhibit
qualitatively similar behavior except for marked differences in the
high-frequency region just below the boson peak. The results on both materials
are consistent with the mode coupling theory of the glass transition.Comment: 8 pages including 4 figure
Top quark spin correlations at hadron colliders: Predictions at next-to-leading order QCD
The collider experiments at the Tevatron and the LHC will allow for detailed
investigations of the properties of the top quark. This requires precise
predictions of the hadronic production of pairs and of their
subsequent decays. In this Letter we present for the reactions the first calculation of the dilepton
angular distribution at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling,
keeping the full dependence on the spins of the intermediate state.
The angular distribution reflects the degree of correlation of the and
spins which we determine for different choices of and
spin bases. In the case of the Tevatron, the QCD corrections are sizeable, and
the distribution is quite sensitive to the parton content of the proton.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Top Quark Pair Production and Decay including Spin Effects at Hadron Colliders: Predictions at NLO QCD
Top quark-antiquark () pairs will be produced copiously at the
Tevatron collider and in huge numbers at the LHC. This will make possible
detailed investigations of the properties and interactions of this quark
flavor. The analysis and interpretation of future data requires precise
predictions of the hadronic production of pairs and of their
subsequent decays. In this talk the reactions are considered and results are presented of our calculation
of the dilepton angular distribution at next-to-leading order QCD, keeping the
full dependence on the spins of the intermediate state. The angular
distribution is determined for different choices of reference axes that can be
identified with the and spin axes. While the QCD corrections to
the leading-order distribution turn out to be small in the case of the LHC, we
find them to be sizeable in the case of the Tevatron and find, moreover, the
angular distribution to be sensitive to the parton content of the proton.Comment: Talk given at 3rd Circum-Pan-Pacific Symposium on "High Energy Spin

Atomistic studies of transformation pathways and energetics in plutonium
One of the most challenging problems in understanding the structural phase
transformations in Pu is to determine the energetically favored, continuous
atomic pathways from one crystal symmetry to another. This problem involves
enumerating candidate pathways and studying their energetics to garner insight
into instabilities and energy barriers. The purpose of this work is to
investigate the energetics of two transformation pathways for the delta to
alpha' transformation in Pu that were recently proposed [Lookman et al., Phys.
Rev. Lett. 100:145504, 2008] on the basis of symmetry. These pathways require
the presence of either an intermediate hexagonal closed-packed (hcp) structure
or a simple hexagonal (sh) structure. A subgroup of the parent fcc and the
intermediate hexagonal structure, which has trigonal symmetry, facilitates the
transformation to the intermediate hcp or sh structure. Phonons then break the
translational symmetry from the intermediate hcp or sh structure to the final
monoclinic symmetry of the alpha' structure. We perform simulations using the
modified embedded atom method (MEAM) for Pu to investigate these candidate
pathways. Our main conclusion is that the path via hcp is energetically favored
and the volume change for both pathways essentially occurs in the second step
of the transformation, i.e. from the intermediate sh or hcp to the monoclinic
structure. Our work also highlights the deficiency of the current
state-of-the-art MEAM potential in capturing the anisotropy associated with the
lower symmetry monoclinic structure.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Philos. Ma

Matching NLO QCD and parton showers in heavy flavour production
We apply the MC@NLO approach to the process of heavy flavour hadroproduction.
MC@NLO is a method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations
and parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, with the following features:
fully exclusive events are generated, with hadronisation according to the MC
model; total rates are accurate to NLO; NLO results for distributions are
recovered upon expansion in \as; hard emissions are treated as in NLO
computations while soft/collinear emissions are handled by the MC simulation,
with the same logarithmic accuracy as the MC; matching between the hard and
soft regions is smooth, and no intermediate integration steps are necessary.
The method was applied previously to the hadroproduction of gauge boson pairs,
which at NLO involves only initial-state QCD radiation and a unique colour
structure. In heavy flavour production, it is necessary to include
contributions from final-state QCD radiation and different colour flows. We
present illustrative results on top and bottom production at the Tevatron and
LHC
Grey matter volume correlates with virtual water maze task performance in boys with androgen excess
Major questions remain about the specific role of testosterone in human spatial navigation. We tested 10 boys (mean age 11.65 years) with an extremely rare disorder of androgen excess (Familial Male Precocious Puberty, FMPP) and 40 healthy boys (mean age 12.81 years) on a virtual version of the Morris Water Maze task. In addition, anatomical magnetic resonance images were collected for all patients and a subsample of the controls (n=21) after task completion. Behaviourally, no significant differences were found between both groups. However, in the MRI analyses, grey matter volume (GMV) was correlated with performance using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Group differences in correlations of performance with GMV were apparent in medial regions of the prefrontal cortex as well as the middle occipital gyrus and the cuneus. By comparison, similar correlations for both groups were found in the inferior parietal lobule. These data provide novel insight into the relation between testosterone and brain development and suggest that morphological differences in a spatial navigation network covary with performance in spatial ability.
