Homotopy Type Theory in Lean
We discuss the homotopy type theory library in the Lean proof assistant. The
library is especially geared toward synthetic homotopy theory. Of particular
interest is the use of just a few primitive notions of higher inductive types,
namely quotients and truncations, and the use of cubical methods.Comment: 17 pages, accepted for ITP 201
Orbiting dynamic compression laboratory
In order to examine the feasibility of carrying out dynamic compression experiments on a space station, the possibility of using explosive gun launchers is studied. The question of whether powders of a refractory metal (molybdenum) and a metallic glass could be well considered by dynamic compression is examined. In both cases extremely good bonds are obtained between grains of metal and metallic glass at 180 and 80 kb, respectively. When the oxide surface is reduced and the dynamic consolidation is carried out in vacuum, in the case of molybdenum, tensile tests of the recovered samples demonstrated beneficial ultimate tensile strengths
Higher order forward spin polarizability
As a guideline for future experiments to extract the four (leading) spin
polarizabilities of the nucleon, we have constructed the forward amplitude for
polarized Compton scattering by dispersion integrals. These integrals have been
saturated by recently measured helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross
sections as well as predictions for pion photoproduction multipoles from
several phenomenological descriptions and chiral perturbation theory. The
comparison of these results corroborates the strategy to extract the spin
polarizabilities by fitting them to polarized Compton data and fixing all
higher order spin effects by dispersion relations based on pion photoproduction
multipoles.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 3 Tables; version to appear in Phys. Lett.
Full abstraction for fair testing in CCS
In previous work with Pous, we defined a semantics for CCS which may both be
viewed as an innocent presheaf semantics and as a concurrent game semantics. It
is here proved that a behavioural equivalence induced by this semantics on CCS
processes is fully abstract for fair testing equivalence. The proof relies on a
new algebraic notion called playground, which represents the 'rule of the
game'. From any playground, two languages, equipped with labelled transition
systems, are derived, as well as a strong, functional bisimulation between
them.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in CALCO '13. To appear Lecture notes in computer

Initial Semantics for Strengthened Signatures
We give a new general definition of arity, yielding the companion notions of
signature and associated syntax. This setting is modular in the sense requested
by Ghani and Uustalu: merging two extensions of syntax corresponds to building
an amalgamated sum. These signatures are too general in the sense that we are
not able to prove the existence of an associated syntax in this general
context. So we have to select arities and signatures for which there exists the
desired initial monad. For this, we follow a track opened by Matthes and
Uustalu: we introduce a notion of strengthened arity and prove that the
corresponding signatures have initial semantics (i.e. associated syntax). Our
strengthened arities admit colimits, which allows the treatment of the
\lambda-calculus with explicit substitution.Comment: In Proceedings FICS 2012, arXiv:1202.317
Space station impact experiments
Four processes serve to illustrate potential areas of study and their implications for general problems in planetary science. First, accretional processes reflect the success of collisional aggregation over collisional destruction during the early history of the solar system. Second, both catastrophic and less severe effects of impacts on planetary bodies survivng from the time of the early solar system may be expressed by asteroid/planetary spin rates, spin orientations, asteroid size distributions, and perhaps the origin of the Moon. Third, the surfaces of planetary bodies directly record the effects of impacts in the form of craters; these records have wide-ranging implications. Fourth, regoliths evolution of asteroidal surfaces is a consequence of cumulative impacts, but the absence of a significant gravity term may profoundly affect the retention of shocked fractions and agglutinate build-up, thereby biasing the correct interpretations of spectral reflectance data. An impact facility on the Space Station would provide the controlled conditions necessary to explore such processes either through direct simulation of conditions or indirect simulation of certain parameters
Including Systematic Uncertainties in Confidence Interval Construction for Poisson Statistics
One way to incorporate systematic uncertainties into the calculation of
confidence intervals is by integrating over probability density functions
parametrizing the uncertainties. In this note we present a development of this
method which takes into account uncertainties in the prediction of background
processes, uncertainties in the signal detection efficiency and background
efficiency and allows for a correlation between the signal and background
detection efficiencies. We implement this method with the Feldman & Cousins
unified approach with and without conditioning. We present studies of coverage
for the Feldman & Cousins and Neyman ordering schemes. In particular, we
present two different types of coverage tests for the case where systematic
uncertainties are included. To illustrate the method we show the relative
effect of including systematic uncertainties the case of dark matter search as
performed by modern neutrino tel escopes.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, replaced to match published versio
