    Vibrational entropy of L12 Cu3Au measured by inelastic neutron scattering

    The phonon density of states of elemental Au, Cu, and Cu3Au with L12 chemical order were measured by inelastic neutron scattering and used to calculate the vibrational entropy of formation of the ordered compound from the elemental metals. A vibrational entropy of formation of (0.06±0.03) kB/atom at 300 K was obtained, with the vibrational entropy of the ordered alloy being larger than that of the elemental metals. The phonon DOS of the disordered Cu3Au was simulated by adding the phonon DOS curves of fcc Cu, L12 Cu3Au, and fcc Au to match the numbers of first-nearest-neighbor pairs in a disordered alloy. The vibrational entropy obtained with this simulated DOS disagrees with calorimetric data and theoretical estimates, indicating that the phonon DOS of disordered Cu3Au depends on chemical order at spatial lengths larger than is set by first-nearest-neighbor pairs

    The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 Planetary Radio Astronomy Experiments (PRA) have produced the finest set of Jovian decametric radio emission data ever obtained. Jovian decametric L-burst and S-burst arcs were characterized and the data reconciled with models for the radio emission geometry and mechanisms. The first major results involve comparisons of the distribution of arc separations with longitudes. The identification and analyses of systematic variations in the PRA data have yielded interesting results, but only the most obvious features of the data were examined. Analyses of the PRA data were extended with the use of new 6-Sec formats that are more sensitive to the S-bursts

    Switching hats ::the effect of role transition on individual ambidexterity

    This article contributes to the growing body of research that focuses on the microfoundations of organizational ambidexterity, that is, understanding what enables individuals to address the exploitation-exploration dilemma. One central challenge generated by ambidexterity is the multiplicity and divergence of organizational roles, to which individuals need to cater when exploiting and exploring. Specifically, we point to the relevance of how individuals identify with and enact this multiplicity of role demands. Following identity theory, we apply the logic of role integration and role segmentation, a foundational classification of how individuals cognitively manage role multiplicity. Further, as different role domains often require the interaction with other organizational functions, we test for the moderating effect of cross-functional coordination on the relationship between role segmentation and individual ambidexterity. Based on data from 120 global account managers employed by multinationals with an average size of 73,348 employees, our results indicate that role segmentation negatively influences an individual’s ability to behave ambidextrously. Interestingly, though, when operating in cross-functional teams, the impact of role segmentation becomes positive. We conclude by highlighting the scope and significance of these findings for theory, managerial practice, and future research

    Ising pyrochlore magnets: Low temperature properties, ice rules and beyond

    Pyrochlore magnets are candidates for spin-ice behavior. We present theoretical simulations of relevance for the pyrochlore family R2Ti2O7 (R= rare earth) supported by magnetothermal measurements on selected systems. By considering long ranged dipole-dipole as well as short-ranged superexchange interactions we get three distinct behaviours: (i) an ordered doubly degenerate state, (ii) a highly disordered state with a broad transition to paramagnetism, (iii) a partially ordered state with a sharp transition to paramagnetism. Thus these competing interactions can induce behaviour very different from conventional ``spin ice''. Closely corresponding behaviour is seen in the real compounds---in particular Ho2Ti2O7 corresponds to case (iii) which has not been discussed before, rather than (ii) as suggested earlier.Comment: 5 pages revtex, 4 figures; some revisions, additional data, additional co-authors and a changed title.     The potential link between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and post-exercise airway narrowing across puberty: a longitudinal cohort study

Recent data suggest that sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption plays a role in asthma aetiology. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether SSB consumption is linked to post-exercise airway narrowing (predictor of asthma development) across puberty. Design Participants completed pulmonary function tests, physical activity and dietary habit questionnaires, and an exercise test to exhaustion. Setting Community in Manhattan, Kansas, USA. Subjects We recruited ten boys and ten girls from an original cohort of forty participants tested in our laboratory approximately 5 years prior. Participants were aged 97 (sd 09) years at baseline and 147 (sd 09) years at follow-up. Results Pre-puberty, boys consumed 68 (sd 48) servings/week and girls consumed 69 (sd 37) servings/week, while post-puberty boys consumed 115 (sd 53) servings/week and girls consumed 77 (sd 43) servings/week. Using Pearson correlation, SSB consumption was not significantly related to post-exercise airway narrowing at pre-puberty (r=-035, P=0130). In linear regression analyses, SSB consumption was significantly related to post-exercise airway narrowing post-puberty before (standardized =-060, P=0005) but not after (standardized =-033, P=0211) adjustment for confounders. Change in SSB consumption from pre- to post-puberty was significantly associated with post-exercise airway narrowing post-puberty (r=-061, P=0010) and change in post-exercise airway narrowing from pre- to post-puberty (r=-045, P=0048) when assessed via Pearson correlations. Conclusions These findings suggest a possible link between SSB consumption and asthma development during maturation. Reduced SSB intake may be a possible public health avenue for blunting rising asthma prevalence

    High-spatial-resolution passive microwave sounding systems

    During this period the emphasis was on the following: (1) further design, construction, and testing of the improved 54-GHz portion of the 54-118 GHz microwave temperature sounder (MTS) aircraft radiometer system in preparation for ER-2 observations in July 1991; and (2) final analysis and documentation of procedures for detecting and analyzing thermal waves in our 118-GHz MTS imagery. In addition, we have new unpublished measurements of dry-air attenuation at frequencies of 54 to 66 GHz and over a temperature range of 280K to 326K; these measurements should enable us to improve further our atmospheric transmittance models. It was further noted that the proposed SSMIS conical-scanning microwave spectrometer on the military DMSP Block 5D-3 spacecraft designed to measure stratospheric and mesospheric temperature profiles will be observing the Zeeman-split oxygen lines with sufficient spectral resolution that the changing Doppler shifts with view angle will substantially degrade the potential system performance unless remedied; this was briefly studied and documented
