Skew-orthogonal Laguerre polynomials for chiral real asymmetric random matrices

    Get PDF
We apply the method of skew-orthogonal polynomials (SOP) in the complex plane to asymmetric random matrices with real elements, belonging to two different classes. Explicit integral representations valid for arbitrary weight functions are derived for the SOP and for their Cauchy transforms, given as expectation values of traces and determinants or their inverses, respectively. Our proof uses the fact that the joint probability distribution function for all combinations of real eigenvalues and complex conjugate eigenvalue pairs can be written as a product. Examples for the SOP are given in terms of Laguerre polynomials for the chiral ensemble (also called the non-Hermitian real Wishart-Laguerre ensemble), both without and with the insertion of characteristic polynomials. Such characteristic polynomials play the role of mass terms in applications to complex Dirac spectra in field theory. In addition, for the elliptic real Ginibre ensemble we recover the SOP of Forrester and Nagao in terms of Hermite polynomials

The spherical 2+p2+p spin glass model: an exactly solvable model for glass to spin-glass transition

We present the full phase diagram of the spherical 2+p2+p spin glass model with p≥4p\geq 4. The main outcome is the presence of a new phase with both properties of Full Replica Symmetry Breaking (FRSB) phases of discrete models, e.g, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and those of One Replica Symmetry Breaking (1RSB). The phase, which separates a 1RSB phase from FRSB phase, is described by an order parameter function q(x)q(x) with a continuous part (FRSB) for x<mx<m and a discontinuous jump (1RSB) at x=mx=m. This phase has a finite complexity which leads to different dynamic and static properties.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

500 TeV gamma rays from Hercules X-1

    Get PDF
A signal (chance probability = .0002) with the 1.24 s period of Hercules X-1 has been observed using the Utah Fly's Eye. The signal's relatively long period and high shower energy conflict with some popular models of particle acceleration by pulsars. Optical and X-ray data suggest a picture in which energetic particles produce multi-TeV gamma rays by collisions with Hercules X-1's accretion disk

Limits on deeply penetrating particles in the 10(17) eV cosmic ray flux

    Get PDF
Deeply penetrating particles in the 10 to the 17th power eV cosmic ray flux were investigated. No such events were found in 8.2 x 10 to the 6th power sec of running time. Limits were set on the following: quark-matter in the primary cosmic ray flux; long-lived, weakly interacting particles produced in p-air collisions; the astrophysical neutrino flux. In particular, the neutrino flux limit at 10 to the 17th power eV implies that z, the red shift of maximum activity is 10 in the model of Hill and Schramm

All sky Northern Hemisphere 10(15) EV gamma-ray survey

Flux limits in the range 10 to the minus 13th power-10 to the minus 12 power/sq cm/s have been obtained by observing Cerenkov flashes from small air showers. During 1983, a 3.5 sigma excess of showers was observed during the phase interval 0.2 to 0.3 of the 4.8h period of Cygnus X-3, but no excess was found in 1984 observations

The Central Laser Facility at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Central Laser Facility is located near the middle of the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. It features a UV laser and optics that direct a beam of calibrated pulsed light into the sky. Light scattered from this beam produces tracks in the Auger optical detectors which normally record nitrogen fluorescence tracks from cosmic ray air showers. The Central Laser Facility provides a "test beam" to investigate properties of the atmosphere and the fluorescence detectors. The laser can send light via optical fiber simultaneously to the nearest surface detector tank for hybrid timing analyses. We describe the facility and show some examples of its many uses.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to 29th ICRC Pune Indi
