    Practical global illumination for interactive particle visualization

    ManuscriptParticle-based simulation methods are used to model a wide range of complex phenomena and to solve time-dependent problems of various scales. Effective visualizations of the resulting state will communicate subtle changes in the three-dimensional structure, spatial organization, and qualitative trends within a simulation as it evolves. We present two algorithms targeting upcoming, highly parallel multicore desktop systems to enable interactive navigation and exploration of large particle datasets with global illumination effects. Monte Carlo path tracing and texture mapping are used to capture computationally expensive illumination effects such as soft shadows and diffuse interreflection. The first approach is based on precomputation of luminance textures and removes expensive illumination calculations from the interactive rendering pipeline. The second approach is based on dynamic luminance texture generation and decouples interactive rendering from the computation of global illumination effects. These algorithms provide visual cues that enhance the ability to perform analysis and feature detection tasks while interrogating the data at interactive rates. We explore the performance of these algorithms and demonstrate their effectiveness using several large datasets

    The primary objective of this program was the evaluation of acoustical holography techniques for characterization of the light water reactor weld surface signatures in the nuclear safeguards program. The accurate characterization of weld surface irregulari ties and vertical deviations was achieved using acoustical holographic interferometric techniques. Preselected weld surfaces were inspected and the vertical deviations characterized by phase measurements or fringe densities in the image. Experimental results on Sandia samples verify depth deviation sensitivities of 0.11 {micro}m to 0.16 {micro}m. The two point interferogram technique is recommended for surveillance of the weld surface associated wi th fuel rod removal in the nuclear safeguard program. The use of this unique holographic signal processing provides essentially a fail-safe method for surveillance of clandestine fuel rod removal. Statistical analysis indicates 99.99% (weld surface deviation) confidence interval between 2~m and 3~m can be achieved. These results illustrate the extremely high resolution capabilities of the surveillance technique employing coherent signal processing

    On the Similarity of Functional Connectivity between Neurons Estimated across Timescales

    A central objective in neuroscience is to understand how neurons interact. Such functional interactions have been estimated using signals recorded with different techniques and, consequently, different temporal resolutions. For example, spike data often have sub-millisecond resolution while some imaging techniques may have a resolution of many seconds. Here we use multi-electrode spike recordings to ask how similar functional connectivity inferred from slower timescale signals is to the one inferred from fast timescale signals. We find that functional connectivity is relatively robust to low-pass filtering—dropping by about 10% when low pass filtering at 10 hz and about 50% when low pass filtering down to about 1 Hz—and that estimates are robust to high levels of additive noise. Moreover, there is a weak correlation for physiological filters such as hemodynamic or Ca2+ impulse responses and filters based on local field potentials. We address the origin of these correlations using simulation techniques and find evidence that the similarity between functional connectivity estimated across timescales is due to processes that do not depend on fast pair-wise interactions alone. Rather, it appears that connectivity on multiple timescales or common-input related to stimuli or movement drives the observed correlations. Despite this qualification, our results suggest that techniques with intermediate temporal resolution may yield good estimates of the functional connections between individual neurons

    SCFAs strongly stimulate PYY production in human enteroendocrine cells.

    Peptide-YY (PYY) and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) play important roles in the regulation of food intake and insulin secretion, and are of translational interest in the field of obesity and diabetes. PYY production is highest in enteroendocrine cells located in the distal intestine, mirroring the sites where high concentrations of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by gut microbiota. We show here that propionate and butyrate strongly increased expression of PYY but not GCG in human cell line and intestinal primary culture models. The effect was predominantly attributable to the histone deacetylase inhibitory activity of SCFA and minor, but significant contributions of FFA2 (GPR43). Consistent with the SCFA-dependent elevation of PYY gene expression, we also observed increased basal and stimulated PYY hormone secretion. Interestingly, the transcriptional stimulation of PYY was specific to human-derived cell models and not reproduced in murine primary cultures. This is likely due to substantial differences in PYY gene structure between mouse and human. In summary, this study revealed a strong regulation of PYY production by SCFA that was evident in humans but not mice, and suggests that high fibre diets elevate plasma concentrations of the anorexigenic hormone PYY, both by targeting gene expression and hormone secretion

    The glacial geomorphology of the western cordilleran ice sheet and Ahklun ice cap, Southern Alaska

    During the late Wisconsinan, Southern Alaska was covered by two large ice masses; the western arm of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet and the Ahklun Mountains Ice Cap. Compared to the other ice sheets that existed during this period (e.g. the British-Irish, Laurentide and Fennoscandian ice sheets), little is known about the geomorphology they left behind. This limits our understanding of their flow pattern and retreat. Here we present systematic mapping of the glacial geomorphology of the two ice masses which existed in Southern Alaska. Due to spatially variable data availability, mapping was conducted using digital elevation models and satellite images of varying resolutions. Offshore, we map the glacial geomorphology using available bathymetric data. For the first time, we document >5000 subglacial lineations, recording ice flow direction. The distribution of moraines is presented, as well as features related to glacial meltwater drainage patterns (eskers and meltwater channels). Prominent troughs were also mapped on Alaska's continental shelf. This map provides the data required for a glacial inversion of these palaeo-ice masses

    The title compound, C23H18N2O4S2, contains a pyrrolo group fused onto the plane of an indole ring with phenyl­sulfonyl and p-toluene­sulfonyl groups bonded to the indole and pyrrolo rings. The angles between the mean planes of the pyrrolo-indole ring and the phenyl­sulfonyl and p-toluene­sulfonyl rings are 73.7 (6) and 80.6 (0)°, respectively. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the two benzene rings is 78.7 (4)°. In the crystal, both classical N—H⋯O and non-classical C—H⋯O inter­molecular hydrogen-bonding inter­actions are observed, as well as weak π–π inter­actions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.6258 (8) and 3.9298 (8) Å], which contribute to the stability of the packing

    Reliability of knee joint position sense measurement: a comparison between goniometry and image capture methods

    Aims: Evaluate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of hand-held goniometry compared to image capture (IMC) in the assessment of joint position sense (JPS) in healthy participants. Methodology: Repeated-measures observational study design was undertaken with 36 asymptomatic university students of both genders aged between 18 to 45 years. JPS in the knee was assessed by two assessors over two sessions (one-week interval) using hand-held goniometry and IMC methods. Joint position sense was assessed at four target knee flexion angles. Intra- and inter-rater reliability was assessed with absolute error (AE), relative error (RE) and intra-class correlation coefficient. Findings: Inter-rater reliability for goniometry was poor to substantial (ICC: 0.00 to 0.64) and was poor to moderate (ICC: 0.00 to 0.47) for IMC. Intra-rater reliability for goniometry was poor to moderate (ICC: 0.00 to 0.42) and poor to moderate for IMC (ICC: 0.00 to 0.41). AE for goniometry ranged from 3.2° to 8.6°, with RE from 0.1°-8.3°. For IMC, AE for goniometry was 5.3° to 12.5°, with RE ranging from 0.1° to 11.1°. Principal Conclusions: Neither goniometry nor IMC appeared superior to the other in JPS assessment. Caution should be made when considering the reliability for goniometry and IMC before clinical assessment is made
