    Development of a fuzzy logic-based solar charge controller for charging lead-acid batteries

This unit contains a solar panel system that supplies power to the module by charging batteries through a controller comprising an Atmega 328 processor. The solar panel feeds voltage to the batteries through fuzzy logic-based software, which allows up to 6 A DC to pass through the controller's power circuit. Consequently, the battery was charged in less time (an average of 7 h to reach maximum capacity), wherein battery lifespan is related to the charge wave frequency. Thus, our software may be adapted in different control algorithms without having to change hardware

    Bayesian multitrait kernel methods improve multienvironment genome-based prediction

    When multitrait data are available, the preferred models are those that are able to account for correlations between phenotypic traits because when the degree of correlation is moderate or large, this increases the genomic prediction accuracy. For this reason, in this article, we explore Bayesian multitrait kernel methods for genomic prediction and we illustrate the power of these models with three-real datasets. The kernels under study were the linear, Gaussian, polynomial, and sigmoid kernels; they were compared with the conventional Ridge regression and GBLUP multitrait models. The results show that, in general, the Gaussian kernel method outperformed conventional Bayesian Ridge and GBLUP multitrait linear models by 2.2–17.45% (datasets 1–3) in terms of prediction performance based on the mean square error of prediction. This improvement in terms of prediction performance of the Bayesian multitrait kernel method can be attributed to the fact that the proposed model is able to capture nonlinear patterns more efficiently than linear multitrait models. However, not all kernels perform well in the datasets used for evaluation, which is why more than one kernel should be evaluated to be able to choose the best kernel

    Sexuality, rights and personhood: tensions in a transnational world

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This article discusses what happens when normative ‘global’ discourses of rights and individuated sexual identity confront the messiness of ‘local’ realities. It considers the tensions that emerge when the relationship between sexual and social identities is not obvious and the implications of such tensions for public health and sexual rights activism. These questions are addressed through debates over the naming of male-to-male sexualities and desires in the context of globalization and the growth of a large NGO (non-governmental organization) sector in urban Bangladesh.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The material in the paper draws on a research project undertaken in 2008-9 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A fundamental objective was to produce a contextualized understanding of sexuality in Dhaka city. Methods used included structured interviews, focus group discussions and informal conversations with a range of participants (students, factory workers, public health professionals and sexual minorities). The aim was to generate a conceptual and analytical framework around sexuality and rights rather than to undertake an empirical survey of any one population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As descriptors, globalized identity categories such as Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), used by public health providers, the state and donors; and gay/lesbian, invoked by human rights activists and transnational NGOs, are too narrow to capture the fluid and highly context-specific ways in which gender and sexually nonconforming persons understand themselves in Bangladesh. Further, class position mediates to a significant degree the reception, appropriation or rejection of transnational categories such as MSM and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT). The tension is reflected in the sometimes fraught relations between service providers to MSM, the people they serve and an emerging group who identify as LGBT.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A simple politics of recognition will be inadequate to the task of promoting health and human rights for all; such a strategy would effectively exclude individuals who do not necessarily connect their sexual practices with a specific sexual or social identity.</p

    Single Particle Transport Through Carbon Nanotube Wires: Effect of Defects and Polyhedral Cap

    The ability to manipulate carbon nanotubes with increasing precision has enabled a large number of successful electron transport experiments. These studies have primarily focussed on characterizing transport through both metallic and semiconducting wires. Tans et al. demonstrated ballistic transport in single-wall nanotubes for the first time, although the experimental configuration incurred large contact resistance. Subsequently, methods of producing low contact resistances have been developed and two terminal conductances smaller than 50 k-ohms have been repeatably demonstrated in single-wall and multi-wall nanotubes. In multi-wall nanotubes, Frank et al. demonstrated a resistance of approximately h/2e(exp 2) in a configuration where the outermost layer made contact to a liquid metal. This was followed by the work of de Pablo et al. where a resistance of h(bar)/27e(exp 2) (approximately 478 ohms) was measured in a configuration where electrical contact was made to many layers of a multi-wall nanotube. Frank et al. and Pablo et al. note that each conducting layer contributes a conductance of only 2e(exp 2)/h, instead of the 4e(exp 2)/h that a single particle mode counting picture yields. These small resistances have been obtained in microns long nanotubes, making them the best conducting molecular wires to date. The large conductance of nanotube wires stems from the fact that the crossing bands of nanotubes are robust to defect scattering

    Artigo extraído de dissertação de mestrado, cujo objetivo foi caracterizar a interação dos enfermeiros com os diagnósticos de enfermagem em neurocirurgia oncológica, considerando comportamentos, manifestações, atitudes e práticas. Participaram da pesquisa dezesseis enfermeiros que atuam com igual ou mais de cinco anos em neurocirurgia oncológica no Instituto Nacional de Câncer. Utilizou-se como referencial teórico o Interacionismo Simbólico e como abordagem metodológica a Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados. Os achados apontaram que, o enfermeiro está desvelando possibilidades de cuidar do cliente de neurocirurgia oncológica, não somente na perspectiva do sofrimento, mas, sobretudo, na perspectiva do cuidado existencial, abarcando as suas necessidades e singularidades, respeitando as suas limitações
