Onsager relations in a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling
Theory predicts for the two-dimensional electrons gas with only Rashba
spin-orbit interaction a vanishing spin Hall conductivity and at the same time
a finite inverse spin Hall effect. We show how these seemingly contradictory
results are compatible with the Onsager relations: the latter do hold for spin
and particle (charge) currents in the two-dimensional electron gas, although
(i) their form depends on the experimental setup and (ii) a vanishing bulk spin
Hall conductivity does not necessarily imply a vanishing spin Hall effect. We
also discuss the situation in which extrinsic spin orbit from impurities is
present and the bulk spin Hall conductivity can be different from zero.Comment: Accepted versio
Spin polarizations and spin Hall currents in a two-dimensional electron gas with magnetic impurities
We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba
spin-orbit coupling, and study the effects of magnetic s-wave impurities and
long-range non-magnetic disorder on the spin-charge dynamics of the system. We
focus on voltage induced spin polarizations and their relation to spin Hall
currents. Our results are obtained using the quasiclassical Green function
technique, and hold in the full range of the disorder parameter .Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. References added, minor stylistic modification
Real-Time Equilibrium Reconstruction in a Tokamak
This paper deals with the numerical reconstruction of the plasma current
density in a Tokamak and of its equilibrium. The problem consists in the
identification of a non-linear source in the 2D Grad-Shafranov equation, which
governs the axisymmetric equilibrium of a plasma in a Tokamak. The experimental
measurements that enable this identification are the magnetics on the vacuum
vessel, but also polarimetric and interferometric measures on several chords,
as well as motional Stark effect or pressure measurements. The reconstruction
can be obtained in real-time using a finite element method, a non-linear
fixed-point algorithm and a least-square optimization procedure
Inverse Spin Hall Effect and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas
We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a
two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems
with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall
effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in
two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry
is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in
the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural
inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse spin
Hall effect are substantially different effects. Furthermore we discuss the
inverse spin Hall effect for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and
Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; our results agree with a recent experiment.Comment: 5 page
Quasiclassical approach to the spin-Hall effect in the two-dimensional electron gas
We study the spin-charge coupled transport in a two-dimensional electron
system using the method of quasiclassical (-integrated) Green's functions.
In particular we derive the Eilenberger equation in the presence of a generic
spin-orbit field. The method allows us to study spin and charge transport from
ballistic to diffusive regimes and continuity equations for spin and charge are
automatically incorporated. In the clean limit we establish the connection
between the spin-Hall conductivity and the Berry phase in momentum space. For
finite systems we solve the Eilenberger equation numerically for the special
case of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a two-terminal geometry. In
particular, we calculate explicitly the spin-Hall induced spin polarization in
the corners, predicted by Mishchenko et al. [13]. Furthermore we find universal
spin currents in the short-time dynamics after switching on the voltage across
the sample, and calculate the corresponding spin-Hall polarization at the
edges. Where available, we find perfect agreement with analytical results.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
ATLAS RPC Quality Assurance results at INFN Lecce
The main results of the quality assurance tests performed on the Resistive
Plate Chamber used by the ATLAS experiment at LHC as muon trigger chambers are
reported and discussed.
Since July 2004, about 270 RPC units has been certified at INFN Lecce site
and delivered to CERN, for being integrated in the final muon station of the
ATLAS barrel region.
We show the key RPC characteristics which qualify the performance of this
detector technology as muon trigger chamber in the harsh LHC enviroments.
These are dark current, chamber efficiency, noise rate, gas volume
tomography, and gas leakage.Comment: Comments: 6 pages, 1 table, 9 figures Proceedings of XXV Physics in

Mirage Cosmology of U(1) Gauge Field on Unstable D3 Brane Universe
An unstable -brane universe governed by the DBI action of the tachyon
field minimally coupled to a U(1) gauge boson is examined. The cosmological
evolution of this coupled system, is further analyzed, in terms of the
expansion rate of the inflating brane, which is highly affected by the presence
of the tachyonic and gauge field charges. We show, that the minimal coupling
makes the effective brane density less divergent. However, for some sectors of
the theory the tachyon is not able to regulate it in an efficient fashion.
Also, a detailed analysis of the dependance of the effective brane density on
the scale factor of the universe is performed, which leads to various
cosmological models.Comment: ReVTeX format 20 pages; v2 1 figure added, one additional paragraph

A Way Out of the Quantum Trap
We review Event Enhanced Quantum Theory (EEQT). In Section 1 we address the
question "Is Quantum Theory the Last Word". In particular we respond to some of
recent challenging staments of H.P. Stapp. We also discuss a possible future of
the quantum paradigm - see also Section 5. In Section 2 we give a short sketch
of EEQT. Examples are given in Section 3. Section 3.3 discusses a completely
new phenomenon - chaos and fractal-like phenomena caused by a simultaneous
"measurement" of several non-commuting observables (we include picture of
Barnsley's IFS on unit sphere of a Hilbert space). In Section 4 we answer
"Frequently Asked Questions" concerning EEQT.Comment: Replacement. Corrected affiliation. Latex, one .jpg figure. To appear

Facility for fast neutron irradiation tests of electronics at the ISIS spallation neutron source
The VESUVIO beam line at the ISIS spallation neutron source was set up for neutron irradiation tests in the neutron energy range above 10 MeV. The neutron flux and energy spectrum were shown, in benchmark activation measurements, to provide a neutron spectrum similar to the ambient one at sea level, but with an enhancement in intensity of a factor of 107. Such conditions are suitable for accelerated testing of electronic components, as was demonstrated here by measurements of soft error rates in recent technology field programable gate arrays
