    Dynamic Critical approach to Self-Organized Criticality

    A dynamic scaling Ansatz for the approach to the Self-Organized Critical (SOC) regime is proposed and tested by means of extensive simulations applied to the Bak-Sneppen model (BS), which exhibits robust SOC behavior. Considering the short-time scaling behavior of the density of sites (ρ(t)\rho(t)) below the critical value, it is shown that i) starting the dynamics with configurations such that ρ(t=0)0\rho(t=0) \to 0 one observes an {\it initial increase} of the density with exponent θ=0.12(2)\theta = 0.12(2); ii) using initial configurations with ρ(t=0)1\rho(t=0) \to 1, the density decays with exponent δ=0.47(2)\delta = 0.47(2). It is also shown that he temporal autocorrelation decays with exponent Ca=0.35(2)C_a = 0.35(2). Using these, dynamically determined, critical exponents and suitable scaling relationships, all known exponents of the BS model can be obtained, e.g. the dynamical exponent z=2.10(5)z = 2.10(5), the mass dimension exponent D=2.42(5)D = 2.42(5), and the exponent of all returns of the activity τALL=0.39(2)\tau_{ALL} = 0.39(2), in excellent agreement with values already accepted and obtained within the SOC regime.Comment: Rapid Communication Physical Review E in press (4 pages, 5 figures

    Collider Bounds on Lee-Wick Higgs Bosons

    We study the constraints on the Lee-Wick Higgs sector arising from direct collider searches. We work in an effective-field theory framework, where all of the Lee-Wick partners are integrated out, with the sole exception of the Lee-Wick Higgs bosons. The resulting theory is a two-Higgs doublet model where the second doublet has wrong-sign kinetic and mass terms. We include the bounds coming from direct Higgs searches at both LEP and Tevatron using the code HiggsBounds, and show the currently excluded parameter space. We also analyze the prospects of LHC Run-I, finding that with a total integrated luminosity of 5 fb 1^{-1} and a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, most of the parameter space for the SM-like CP-even Higgs will be probed.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, matches version published by PR

    Gap results for free boundary CMC surfaces in the Euclidean three-ball

    In this note, we prove that if a free boundary constant mean curvature surface Σ\Sigma in an Euclidean 3-ball satisfies a pinching condition on the length of traceless second fundamental tensor, then either Σ\Sigma is a totally umbilical disk or an annulus of revolution. The pinching is sharp since there are portions of some Delaunay surfaces inside the unit Euclidean 3-ball which are free boundary and satisfy the pinching condition.Comment: 11 page

    Variaciones estacionales en el crecimiento de larvas de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) en la zona costera argentina

    Age and growth rates of the anchovy larvae (Engraulis anchoita) in Argentine waters were estimated by analysing daily growth increments in sagittal otoliths under light microscope. The samples were collected during 2000 on the Argentine coastal shelf using a Bongo net. A total of 251 larvae were analysed (size range 3.5 to 12.2 mm standard length). Length-at-age and standard length-otolith radius relationships were best described by linear models. We put forward the hypothesis of differential larval growth in anchovy in relation to seasonality. Mean growth rates at four days before capture were determined by back-calculation and analysed in relation to temperature. The growth rate values obtained from the linear growth models were 0.51 mm day-1 (spring), 0.41 mm day-1 (summer) and 0.42 mm day-1 (autumn). Significant variations were detected between spring and summer and between spring and autumn. These variations do not seem to be associated with a thermal influence.Se determinó la edad y el crecimiento de larvas de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) mediante el conteo y medición de los incrementos diarios de los otolitos sagitta. Las larvas fueron capturadas en la Plataforma Costera Argentina durante el año 2000 por medio de una red Bongo. Se analizaron un total de 251 larvas entre 3.5 a 12.2 mm. Las relaciones talla-edad y talla -radio del otolito se representaron mediante modelos lineales para cada estación del año (primavera-verano-otoño). La mayor tasa de crecimiento, calculada como la pendiente de los modelos talla -edad, se registró en primavera (0.51 mm dia-1) la menor en verano (0.41 mm dia-1), mientras que otoño presentó una tasa de crecimiento intermedia (0.42 mm dia-1). Si bien no se encontraron diferencias significativas en las tasas de crecimiento entre verano y otoño, sí las hubo entre primavera y verano y entre primavera y otoño. Se calculó una tasa de crecimiento larvaria 4 días antes de la captura mediante retrocálculo y se la relacionó con la temperatura. Las variaciones en el crecimiento no parecen relacionarse con la influencia térmica

    Decoherence induced by Smith-Purcell radiation

    The interaction between charged particles and the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field induces decoherence, and therefore affects the contrast of fringes in an interference experiment. In this article we show that if a double slit experiment is performed near a conducting grating, the fringe visibility is reduced. We find that the reduction of contrast is proportional to the number of grooves in the conducting surface, and that for realistic values of the parameters it could be large enough to be observed. The effect can be understood in terms of the Smith-Purcell radiation produced by the surface currents induced in the conductor.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.     The microRNA let-7 is a critical regulator of developmental timing events at the larval-to-adult transition in C. elegans. Recently, microRNAs with sequence similarity to let-7 have been identified. We find that doubly mutant animals lacking the let-7 family microRNA genes mir-48 and mir-84 exhibit retarded molting behavior and retarded adult gene expression in the hypodermis. Triply mutant animals lacking mir-48, mir-84, and mir-241 exhibit repetition of L2-stage events in addition to retarded adult-stage events. mir-48, mir-84, and mir-241 function together to control the L2-to-L3 transition, likely by base pairing to complementary sites in the hbl-1 3′ UTR and downregulating hbl-1 activity. Genetic analysis indicates that mir-48, mir-84, and mir-241 specify the timing of the L2-to-L3 transition in parallel to the heterochronic genes lin-28 and lin-46. These results indicate that let-7 family microRNAs function in combination to affect both early and late developmental timing decisions
