An analysis of the vertical structure equation for arbitrary thermal profiles
The vertical structure equation is a singular Sturm-Liouville problem whose eigenfunctions describe the vertical dependence of the normal modes of the primitive equations linearized about a given thermal profile. The eigenvalues give the equivalent depths of the modes. The spectrum of the vertical structure equation and the appropriateness of various upper boundary conditions, both for arbitrary thermal profiles were studied. The results depend critically upon whether or not the thermal profile is such that the basic state atmosphere is bounded. In the case of a bounded atmosphere it is shown that the spectrum is always totally discrete, regardless of details of the thermal profile. For the barotropic equivalent depth, which corresponds to the lowest eigen value, upper and lower bounds which depend only on the surface temperature and the atmosphere height were obtained. All eigenfunctions are bounded, but always have unbounded first derivatives. It was proved that the commonly invoked upper boundary condition that vertical velocity must vanish as pressure tends to zero, as well as a number of alternative conditions, is well posed. It was concluded that the vertical structure equation always has a totally discrete spectrum under the assumptions implicit in the primitive equations
Scalable Text and Link Analysis with Mixed-Topic Link Models
Many data sets contain rich information about objects, as well as pairwise
relations between them. For instance, in networks of websites, scientific
papers, and other documents, each node has content consisting of a collection
of words, as well as hyperlinks or citations to other nodes. In order to
perform inference on such data sets, and make predictions and recommendations,
it is useful to have models that are able to capture the processes which
generate the text at each node and the links between them. In this paper, we
combine classic ideas in topic modeling with a variant of the mixed-membership
block model recently developed in the statistical physics community. The
resulting model has the advantage that its parameters, including the mixture of
topics of each document and the resulting overlapping communities, can be
inferred with a simple and scalable expectation-maximization algorithm. We test
our model on three data sets, performing unsupervised topic classification and
link prediction. For both tasks, our model outperforms several existing
state-of-the-art methods, achieving higher accuracy with significantly less
computation, analyzing a data set with 1.3 million words and 44 thousand links

The Automorphism Group of the Free Algebra of Rank Two
The theorem of Czerniakiewicz and Makar-Limanov, that all
the automorphisms of a free algebra of rank two are tame is proved here by
showing that the group of these automorphisms is the free product of two
groups (amalgamating their intersection), the group of all affine automorphisms
and the group of all triangular automorphisms. The method consists
in finding a bipolar structure. As a consequence every finite subgroup of
automorphisms (in characteristic zero) is shown to be conjugate to a group of
linear automorphisms
Topologically non-trivial quantum layers
Given a complete non-compact surface embedded in R^3, we consider the
Dirichlet Laplacian in a layer of constant width about the surface. Using an
intrinsic approach to the layer geometry, we generalise the spectral results of
an original paper by Duclos et al. to the situation when the surface does not
possess poles. This enables us to consider topologically more complicated
layers and state new spectral results. In particular, we are interested in
layers built over surfaces with handles or several cylindrically symmetric
ends. We also discuss more general regions obtained by compact deformations of

Characterisation and representation of non-dissipative electromagnetic medium with a double light cone
We study Maxwell's equations on a 4-manifold N with a medium that is
non-dissipative and has a linear and pointwise response. In this setting, the
medium can be represented by a suitable (2,2)-tensor on the 4-manifold N.
Moreover, in each cotangent space on N, the medium defines a Fresnel surface.
Essentially, the Fresnel surface is a tensorial analogue of the dispersion
equation that describes the response of the medium for signals in the geometric
optics limit. For example, in isotropic medium the Fresnel surface is at each
point a Lorentz light cone. In a recent paper, I. Lindell, A. Favaro and L.
Bergamin introduced a condition that constrains the polarisation for plane
waves. In this paper we show (under suitable assumptions) that a slight
strengthening of this condition gives a pointwise characterisation of all
medium tensors for which the Fresnel surface is the union of two distinct
Lorentz null cones. This is for example the behaviour of uniaxial medium like
calcite. Moreover, using the representation formulas from Lindell et al. we
obtain a closed form representation formula that pointwise parameterises all
medium tensors for which the Fresnel surface is the union of two distinct
Lorentz null cones. Both the characterisation and the representation formula
are tensorial and do not depend on local coordinates
Addendum: "The Dynamics of M15: Observations of the Velocity Dispersion Profile and Fokker-Planck Models" (ApJ, 481, 267 [1997])
It has recently come to our attention that there are axis scale errors in
three of the figures of Dull et al. (1997, hereafter D97). D97 presented
Fokker-Planck models for the collapsed-core globular cluster M15 that include a
dense, centrally concentrated population of neutron stars and massive white
dwarfs, but do not include a central black hole. In this Addendum, we present
corrected versions of Figures 9, 10, and 12, and an expanded version of Figure
6. This latter figure, which shows the full run of the velocity dispersion
profile, indicates that the D97 model predictions are in good agreement with
the moderately rising HST-STIS velocity dispersion profile for M15 reported by
Gerssen et al. (2002, astro-ph/0209315). Thus, a central black hole is not
required to fit the new STIS velocity measurements, provided that there is a
sufficient population of neutron stars and massive white dwarfs. This
conclusion is consistent with the findings of Gerssen et al. (2002,
astro-ph/0210158), based on a reapplication of their Jeans equation analysis
