    Application of Ion Cyclotron Resonance to the Study of Inelastic Excitation by Low-Energy Electrons

    The geometry of the resonance cell employed for ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy (1-3) is ideally suited for studying inelastic excitation by low-energy electrons. It has been shown that the electron beam traverses a parabolic potential well between the trapping electrodes, the depth of which is approximately half the applied trapping voltage (3,4). Low-energy electrons generated by impact excitation of an atomic or molecular energy level can be trapped in the resonance cell if their final translational energy is insufficient to escape the preset depth of the potential well. These electrons can be drifted from the source of the resonance region by applying the usual static drift field E normal to the primary magnetic field H (4). The electron drift velocity in this crossed field geometry, given by cE/H, is independent of both charge and mass. For typical values of E and H the drift velocity is in the range of 10^1-10^3 cm/sec. In the lower range of accessible drift velocities, the residence time of electrons in the resonance cell approaches 0.1 sec

    First principles determination of the Peierls stress of the shuffle screw dislocation in silicon

    The Peierls stress of the a/2 screw dislocation belonging to the shuffle set is calculated for silicon using density functional theory. We have checked the effect of boundary conditions by using two models, the supercell method where one considers a periodic array of dislocations, and the cluster method where a single dislocation is embedded in a small cluster. The Peierls stress is underestimated with the supercell and overestimated with the cluster. These contributions have been calculated and the Peierls stress is determined in the range between 2.4 x 10-2 and 2.8 x 10-2 eV {\AA}-3. When moving, the dislocation follows the {111} plane going through a low energy metastable configuration and never follows the 100 plane, which includes a higher energy metastable core configuration

    Multiwavelength Observations of the Hot DB Star PG 0112+104

    We present a comprehensive multiwavelength analysis of the hot DB white dwarf PG 0112+104. Our analysis relies on newly-acquired FUSE observations, on medium-resolution FOS and GHRS data, on archival high-resolution GHRS observations, on optical spectrophotometry both in the blue and around Halpha, as well as on time-resolved photometry. From the optical data, we derive a self-consistent effective temperature of 31,300+-500 K, a surface gravity of log g = 7.8 +- 0.1 (M=0.52 Msun), and a hydrogen abundance of log N(H)/N(He) < -4.0. The FUSE spectra reveal the presence of CII and CIII lines that complement the previous detection of CII transitions with the GHRS. The improved carbon abundance in this hot object is log N(C)/N(He) = -6.15 +- 0.23. No photospheric features associated with other heavy elements are detected. We reconsider the role of PG 0112+104 in the definition of the blue edge of the V777 Her instability strip in light of our high-speed photometry, and contrast our results with those of previous observations carried out at the McDonald Observatory.Comment: 10 pages in emulateapj, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    The collection of Triclads from the Austrian-Ceylonese hydrobiological mission originates from 23 streams in the mountains of the south of Sri Lanka. All collected animals are of the Dugesia gonocephala (Dug.) type. Unfortunately the determinable mature animals were very rare in the samples but it seems certain that all the Triclads, found by the mission, belong to Dugesia nannophallus, described by Ball in 1970 after two individuals from Dunhinda, Badulla (Prov. Uva, Sri Lanka)

    The Management Function of Ocean Boundaries

    This Article discusses the nature of spatial and functional zones in the ocean, and their relation to the purposes of coastal-state and international jurisdictions. The author argues that advances in ocean technology, growing requirements for marine resources, and an increasing number of ocean users, have created the need for a functional and managerial approach to the exploitation of offshore resources and the use of ocean space. The author further argues that the boundaries which man has set in the ocean have generally inhibited such a development, because they carry with them an idea of separation or divisiveness, which has been transported from land boundary concepts. The author concludes by suggesting that the way to expand the existing framework and effectiveness of maritime boundaries is to view ocean boundaries as conceptually different from land boundaries

    Surface Electromyographic (sEMG) Transduction of Hand Joint Angles for Human Interfacing Devices (HID)

    This is an investigation of the use of surface electromyography (sEMG) as a tool to improve human interfacing devices (HID) information bandwidth through the transduction of the fingertip workspace. It combines the work of Merletti et al and Jarque-Bou et al to design an open-source framework for Fingertip Workspace based Human Interfacing Devices (HID). In this framework, the fingertip workspace is defined as the system of forearm and hand muscle force through a tensor which describes hand anthropometry. The thesis discusses the electrophysiology of muscle tissue along with the anatomy and physiology of the arm in pursuit of optimizing sensor location, muscle force measurements, and viable command gestures. Algorithms for correlating sEMG to hand joint angle are investigated using MATLAB for both static and moving gestures. Seven sEMG spots and Fingertip Joint Angles recorded by Jarque Bou et al are investigated for the application of sEMG to Human Interfacing Devices (HID). Such technology is termed Gesture Computer Interfacing (GCI) and has been shown feasible through devices such as CTRL Labs interface, and models such as those of Sartori, Merletti, and Zhao. Muscles under sEMG spots in this dataset and the actions related to them are discussed, along with what muscles and hand actions are not visible within this dataset. Viable gestures for detection algorithms are discussed based on the muscles discerned to be visible in the dataset through intensity, spectral moment, power spectra, and coherence. Detection and isolation of such viable actions is fundamental to designing an EMG driven musculoskeletal model of the hand needed to facilitate GCI. Enveloping, spectral moment, power spectrum, and coherence analysis are applied to a Sollerman Hand Function Test sEMG dataset of twenty-two subjects performing 26 activities of living to differentiate pinching and grasping tasks. Pinches and grasps were found to cause very different activation patterns in sEMG spot 3 relating to flexion of digits I - V. Spectral moment was found to be less correlated with differentiation and provided information about the degree of object manipulation performed and extent of fatigue during each task. Coherence was shown to increase between flexors and extensors with intensity of task but was found corrupted by crosstalk with increasing intensity of muscular activation. Some spectral results correlated between finger flexor and extensor power spectra showed anticipatory coherence between the muscle groups at the end of object manipulation. An sEMG amplification system capable of capturing HD-sEMG with a bandwidth of 300 and 500 Hz at a sampling frequency of 2 kHz was designed for future work. The system was designed in ordinance with current IEEE research on sensor-electrode characteristics. Furthermore, discussion of solutions to open issues in HD-sEMG is provided. This work did not implement the designed wristband but serves as a literature review and open-source design using commercially available technologies

    A Comprehensive Spectroscopic Analysis of DB White Dwarfs

    We present a detailed analysis of 108 helium-line (DB) white dwarfs based on model atmosphere fits to high signal-to-noise optical spectroscopy. We derive a mean mass of 0.67 Mo for our sample, with a dispersion of only 0.09 Mo. White dwarfs also showing hydrogen lines, the DBA stars, comprise 44% of our sample, and their mass distribution appears similar to that of DB stars. As in our previous investigation, we find no evidence for the existence of low-mass (M < 0.5 Mo) DB white dwarfs. We derive a luminosity function based on a subset of DB white dwarfs identified in the Palomar-Green survey. We show that 20% of all white dwarfs in the temperature range of interest are DB stars, although the fraction drops to half this value above Teff ~ 20,000 K. We also show that the persistence of DB stars with no hydrogen features at low temperatures is difficult to reconcile with a scenario involving accretion from the interstellar medium, often invoked to account for the observed hydrogen abundances in DBA stars. We present evidence for the existence of two different evolutionary channels that produce DB white dwarfs: the standard model where DA stars are transformed into DB stars through the convective dilution of a thin hydrogen layer, and a second channel where DB stars retain a helium-atmosphere throughout their evolution. We finally demonstrate that the instability strip of pulsating V777 Her white dwarfs contains no nonvariables, if the hydrogen content of these stars is properly accounted for.Comment: 74 pages including 30 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Might Carbon-Atmosphere White Dwarfs Harbour a New Type of Pulsating Star?

    In the light of the recent and unexpected discovery of a brand new type of white dwarfs, those with carbon-dominated atmospheres, we examine the asteroseismological potential of such stars. The motivation behind this is based on the observation that past models of carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs have partially ionized outer layers that bear strong resemblance with those responsible for mode excitation in models of pulsating DB (helium-atmosphere) and pulsating DA (hydrogen-atmosphere) white dwarfs. Our exciting main result is that, given the right location in parameter space, some carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs are predicted to show pulsational instability against gravity modes. We are eagerly waiting the results of observational searches for luminosity variations in these stars.Comment: 4-page letter + 4 figure

    Infrared photochemistry of ethylene clusters

    Infrared irradiation of ethylene clusters formed in supersonic molecular beams, using a low power cw CO2 laser, results in the photodissociation of a large fraction of the van der Waals molecules. Under such conditions, infrared absorption intensity exhibits first-order power dependence and is readily detected as loss in molecular beam intensity. Intramolecular energy transfer rates, determined by measuring spectral linewidths, are shown to vary with the vibrational mode initially excited. Ethylene clusters containing one quantum of vibrational energy corresponding to the nun7 fundamental in the monomer (949 cm^–1) have a vibrationally predissociative lifetime of 0.33 psec. In comparison, the relaxation rate of ethylene-d4 clusters with one quantum of excitation corresponding to the nu12 (1078 cm^–1) mode of C2D4 is 0.7 psec

    Virtue and austerity

    Virtue ethics is often proposed as a third way in health-care ethics, that while consequentialism and deontology focus on action guidelines, virtue focuses on character; all three aim to help agents discern morally right action although virtue seems to have least to contribute to political issues, such as austerity. I claim: (1) This is a bad way to characterize virtue ethics. The 20th century renaissance of virtue ethics was first proposed as a response to the difficulty of making sense of ‘moral rightness’ outside a religious context. For Aristotle the right action is that which is practically best; that means best for the agent in order to live a flourishing life.There are no moral considerations besides this. (2) Properly characterized, virtue ethics can contribute to discussion of austerity. A criticism of virtue ethics is that fixed characteristics seem a bad idea in ever-changing environments; perhaps we should be generous in prosperity, selfish in austerity. Furthermore, empirical evidence suggests that people indeed do change with their environment. However, I argue that virtues concern fixed values not fixed behaviour; the values underlying virtue allow for different behaviour in different circumstances: in austerity, virtues still give the agent the best chance of flourishing. Two questions arise. (a) In austere environments might not injustice help an individual flourish by, say, obtaining material goods? No, because unjust acts undermine the type of society the agent needs for flourishing. (b) What good is virtue to those lacking the other means to flourish? The notion of degrees of flourishing shows that most people would benefit somewhat from virtue. However, in extreme circumstances virtue might harm rather than benefit the agent: such circumstances are to be avoided; virtue ethics thus has a political agenda to enable flourishing. This requires justice, a fortiori when in austerity
