A sequential regularization method for time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equations
The objective of the paper is to present a method, called sequential regularization method (SRM), for the nonstationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations from the viewpoint of regularization of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) , and to provide a way to apply a DAE method to partial differential-algebraic equations (PDAEs). The SRM is a functional iterative procedure. It is proved that its convergence rate is O(ffl m ), where m is the number of the SRM iterations and ffl is the regularization parameter. The discretization and implementation issues of the method are considered. In particular, a simple explicit difference scheme is analyzed and its stability is proved under the usual step size condition of explicit schemes. It appears that the SRM formulation is new in the Navier-Stokes context. Joint parental school choice: exploring the influence of individual preferences of husbands and wives
The objective of this paper is to study school choice as a deliberate joint parental decision. This decision is affected by the underlying preferences of the husband and wife. We use survey data from a sample of parents in the metropolitan area of Bilbao (Spain) to estimate a bargaining discrete choice model. The collected data set contains hypothetical school choices gathered in the form of a typical discrete choice experiment (stated preferences) and the actual school choice (revealed preferences). Stated preference data are obtained separately for husbands and wives, but the revealed preference choice is taken jointly. Our findings show, firstly, that the husband's and wife's stated preferences regarding school choice do not differ markedly. Secondly, the results obtained for the revealed preferences deviate from the stated preferences for some school characteristics. Finally, we find that neither the husband's nor the wife's preferences prevail in the actual joint school choice decision
Search for associations containing young stars (SACY). V. Is multiplicity universal? Tight multiple systems
Context: Dynamically undisrupted, young populations of stars are crucial to
study the role of multiplicity in relation to star formation. Loose nearby
associations provide us with a great sample of close (150 pc) Pre-Main
Sequence (PMS) stars across the very important age range (5-70 Myr) to
conduct such research.
Aims: We characterize the short period multiplicity fraction of the SACY
(Search for Associations Containing Young stars) accounting for any
identifiable bias in our techniques and present the role of multiplicity
fractions of the SACY sample in the context of star formation.
Methods: Using the cross-correlation technique we identified double-lined
spectroscopic systems (SB2), in addition to this we computed Radial Velocity
(RV) values for our subsample of SACY targets using several epochs of FEROS and
UVES data. These values were used to revise the membership of each association
then combined with archival data to determine significant RV variations across
different data epochs characteristic of multiplicity; single-lined multiple
systems (SB1).
Results: We identified 7 new multiple systems (SB1s: 5, SB2s: 2). We find no
significant difference between the short period multiplicity fraction
() of the SACY sample and that of nearby star forming regions
(1-2 Myr) and the field (10%) both as a function of
age and as a function of primary mass, , in the ranges [1:200 day] and
[0.08 -].
Conclusions: Our results are consistent with the picture of universal star
formation, when compared to the field and nearby star forming regions (SFRs).
We comment on the implications of the relationship between increasing
multiplicity fraction with primary mass, within the close companion range, in

Searching for Faint Comoving Companions to the α Centauri system in the VVV Survey Infrared Images

All rights reserved.The VVV survey has observed the southern disk of the Milky Way in the near infrared, covering 240 deg in the filters. We search the VVV Survey images in a 19 deg field around Centauri, the nearest stellar system to the Sun, to look for possible overlooked companions that the baseline in time of VVV would be able to uncover. The photometric depth of our search reaches 19.3 mag, 19 mag, and 17 mag. This search has yielded no new companions in Centauri system, setting an upper mass limit for any unseen companion well into the brown dwarf/planetary mass regime. The apparent magnitude limits were turned into effective temperature limits, and the presence of companion objects with effective temperatures warmer than 325K can be ruled out using different state-of-the-art atmospheric models. Search for associations containing young stars (SACY) VII. New stellar and substellar candidate members in the young associations
The young associations offer us one of the best opportunities to study the
properties of young stellar and substellar objects and to directly image
planets thanks to their proximity (200 pc) and age (5-150 Myr).
However, many previous works have been limited to identifying the brighter,
more active members (1 M) owing to photometric survey
sensitivities limiting the detections of lower mass objects. We search the
field of view of 542 previously identified members of the young associations to
identify wide or extremely wide (1000-100,000 au in physical separation)
companions. We combined 2MASS near-infrared photometry (, , ) with
proper motion values (from UCAC4, PPMXL, NOMAD) to identify companions in the
field of view of known members. We collated further photometry and spectroscopy
from the literature and conducted our own high-resolution spectroscopic
observations for a subsample of candidate members. This complementary
information allowed us to assess the efficiency of our method. We identified 84
targets (45: 0.2-1.3 M, 17: 0.08-0.2 M, 22: 0.08 M)
in our analysis, ten of which have been identified from spectroscopic analysis
in previous young association works. For 33 of these 84, we were able to
further assess their membership using a variety of properties (X-ray emission,
UV excess, H, lithium and K I equivalent widths, radial velocities,
and CaH indices). We derive a success rate of 76-88% for this technique based
on the consistency of these properties. Once confirmed, the targets identified
in this work would significantly improve our knowledge of the lower mass end of
the young associations. Additionally, these targets would make an ideal new

Disinfection efficiency of secondary effluents with ultraviolet light in a Mediterranean area
This paper deals with the study of physicochemical and microbiological parameters affecting disinfection efficiency of secondary effluents in a municipal wastewater treatment plant, for irrigation purposes. There appears to be an important increase on turbidity values as chlorine values increases, due to the conversion of particulate organic carbon into dissolved organic carbon. The nitrification-denitrificacion processes appeared to be sensitive to changes in pH, with a minimum nitrate value in the wastewater when pH ranged between 7.01-8.00. With a similar behaviour, the phosphate removal was conditioned by pH, showing the highest efficiency in the same pH range. Both anions probed to be strongly correlated. Total coliforms were more UV light resistant than faecal coliforms, after an exposure of 10 min, corresponding to an UV dose of 73 mJ/cm2. The experimental results for both groups of microorganisms followed first order reaction kinetics, with a gradual flattening at higher UV doses. A total elimination of both indicators would be achieved with doses over 95 mJ/cm2. A previous step on the treated wastewater would improve its quality before the disinfection process
Age-dependent differences in human brain activity using a face- and location-matching task: An fMRI study
Purpose: To evaluate the differences of cortical activation patterns in young and elderly healthy subjects for object and spatial visual processing using a face- and location-matching task. Materials and Methods: We performed a face- and a location-matching task in 15 young (mean age: 28 +/- 9 years) and 19 elderly (mean age: 71 +/- 6 years) subjects. Each experiment consisted of 7 blocks alternating between activation and control condition. For face matching, the subjects had to indicate whether two displayed faces were identical or different. For location matching, the subjects had to press a button whenever two objects had an identical position. For control condition, we used a perception task with abstract images. Functional imaging was performed on a 1.5-tesla scanner using an EPI sequence. Results: In the face-matching task, the young subjects showed bilateral (right 1 left) activation in the occipito-temporal pathway (occipital gyrus, inferior and middle temporal gyrus). Predominantly right hemispheric activations were found in the fusiform gyrus, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (inferior and middle frontal gyrus) and the superior parietal gyrus. In the elderly subjects, the activated areas in the right fronto-lateral cortex increased. An additional activated area could be found in the medial frontal gyrus (right > left). In the location-matching task, young subjects presented increased bilateral (right > left) activation in the superior parietal lobe and precuneus compared with face matching. The activations in the occipito-temporal pathway, in the right fronto-lateral cortex and the fusiform gyrus were similar to the activations found in the face-matching task. In the elderly subjects, we detected similar activation patterns compared to the young subjects with additional activations in the medial frontal gyrus. Conclusion: Activation patterns for object-based and spatial visual processing were established in the young and elderly healthy subjects. Search for associations containing young stars (SACY). VI. Is multiplicity universal? Stellar multiplicity in the range 3-1000 au from adaptive-optics observations
Context. Young loose nearby associations are unique samples of close (<150
pc), young (approx 5-100 Myr) pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. A significant
number of members of these associations have been identified in the SACY
collaboration. We can use the proximity and youth of these members to
investigate key ingredients in star formation processes, such as multiplicity.
Aims. We present the statistics of identified multiple systems from 113
confirmed SACY members. We derive multiplicity frequencies, mass-ratio, and
physical separation distributions in a consistent parameter space, and compare
our results to other PMS populations and the field.
Methods. We have obtained adaptive-optics assisted near-infrared observations
with NACO (ESO/VLT) and IRCAL (Lick Observatory) for at least one epoch of all
113 SACY members. We have identified multiple systems using co-moving
proper-motion analysis and using contamination estimates. We have explored
ranges in projected separation and mass-ratio of a [3-1000 au], and q [0.1-1],
respectively.
Results. We have identified 31 multiple systems (28 binaries and 3 triples).
We derive a multiplicity frequency (MF) of MF_(3-1000au)=28.4 +4.7, -3.9% and a
triple frequency (TF) of TF_(3-1000au)=2.8 +2.5, -0.8% in the separation range
of 3-1000 au. We do not find any evidence for an increase in the MF with
primary mass. The estimated mass-ratio of our statistical sample (with
power-law index gamma=-0.04 +/- 0.14) is consistent with a flat distribution
(gamma = 0).
Conclusions. We show further similarities (but also hints of discrepancies)
between SACY and the Taurus region: flat mass-ratio distributions and
statistically similar MF and TF values. We also compared the SACY sample to the
field (in the separation range of 19-100 au), finding that the two
distributions are indistinguishable, suggesting a similar formation mechanism.Comment: 16 Pages, accepted in A&A 28 May 201
SPITZER: Accretion in Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Lambda Orionis Cluster
We present multi-wavelength optical and infrared photometry of 170 previously
known low mass stars and brown dwarfs of the 5 Myr Collinder 69 cluster (Lambda
Orionis). The new photometry supports cluster membership for most of them, with
less than 15% of the previous candidates identified as probable non-members.
The near infrared photometry allows us to identify stars with IR excesses, and
we find that the Class II population is very large, around 25% for stars (in
the spectral range M0 - M6.5) and 40% for brown dwarfs, down to 0.04 Msun,
despite the fact that the H(alpha) equivalent width is low for a significant
fraction of them. In addition, there are a number of substellar objects,
classified as Class III, that have optically thin disks. The Class II members
are distributed in an inhomogeneous way, lying preferentially in a filament
running toward the south-east. The IR excesses for the Collinder 69 members
range from pure Class II (flat or nearly flat spectra longward of 1 micron), to
transition disks with no near-IR excess but excesses beginning within the IRAC
wavelength range, to two stars with excess only detected at 24 micron.
Collinder 69 thus appears to be at an age where it provides a natural
laboratory for the study of primordial disks and their dissipation.Comment: ApJ, in pres
