Current and current fluctuations in quantum shuttles
We review the properties of electron shuttles, i.e. nanoelectromechanical
devices that transport electrons one-by-one by utilizing a combination of
electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. We focus on the extreme quantum
limit, where the mechanical motion is quantized. We introduce the main
theoretical tools needed for the analysis, e.g. generalized master equations
and Wigner functions, and we outline the methods how the resulting large
numerical problems can be handled. Illustrative results are given for current,
noise, and full counting statistics for a number of model systems. Throughout
the review we focus on the physics behind the various approximations, and some
simple examples are given to illustrate the theoretical concepts. We also
comment on the experimental situation.Comment: Minireview; technical level aimed at general audience, based on an

Aves migratórias ocorrentes no Pantanal: caracterização e conservação.
The decay of Batchelor and Saffman rotating turbulence
The decay rate of isotropic and homogeneous turbulence is known to be
affected by the large-scale spectrum of the initial perturbations, associated
with at least two cannonical self-preserving solutions of the von
K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation: the so-called Batchelor and Saffman spectra. The
effect of long-range correlations in the decay of anisotropic flows is less
clear, and recently it has been proposed that the decay rate of rotating
turbulence may be independent of the large-scale spectrum of the initial
perturbations. We analyze numerical simulations of freely decaying rotating
turbulence with initial energy spectra (Batchelor turbulence) and
(Saffman turbulence) and show that, while a self-similar decay
cannot be identified for the total energy, the decay is indeed affected by
long-range correlations. The decay of two-dimensional and three-dimensional
modes follows distinct power laws in each case, which are consistent with
predictions derived from the anisotropic von K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation, and
with conservation of anisotropic integral quantities by the flow evolution
The decay of turbulence in rotating flows
We present a parametric space study of the decay of turbulence in rotating
flows combining direct numerical simulations, large eddy simulations, and
phenomenological theory. Several cases are considered: (1) the effect of
varying the characteristic scale of the initial conditions when compared with
the size of the box, to mimic "bounded" and "unbounded" flows; (2) the effect
of helicity (correlation between the velocity and vorticity); (3) the effect of
Rossby and Reynolds numbers; and (4) the effect of anisotropy in the initial
conditions. Initial conditions include the Taylor-Green vortex, the
Arn'old-Beltrami-Childress flow, and random flows with large-scale energy
spectrum proportional to . The decay laws obtained in the simulations for
the energy, helicity, and enstrophy in each case can be explained with
phenomenological arguments that separate the decay of two-dimensional from
three-dimensional modes, and that take into account the role of helicity and
rotation in slowing down the energy decay. The time evolution of the energy
spectrum and development of anisotropies in the simulations are also discussed.
Finally, the effect of rotation and helicity in the skewness and kurtosis of
the flow is considered.Comment: Sections reordered to address comments by referee

Optical Transition and Momentum Transfer in Atomic Wave Packets
It is shown that the population Rabi-floppings in a lossless two-level atom,
interacting with a monochromatic electromagnetic field, in general are
convergent in time. The well-known continuous floppings take place because the
restricted choosing of initial conditions, that is when the atom initially is
chosen on ground or excited level before the interaction, simultaneously having
a definite value of momentum there. The convergence of Rabi-floppings in atomic
wave-packet-states is a direct consequence of Doppler effect on optical
transition rates (Rabi-frequencies): it gradually leads to ''irregular''
chaotic-type distributions of momentum in ground and excited energy levels,
smearing the amplitudes of Rabi-floppings. Conjointly with Rabi-floppings, the
coherent accumulation of momentum on each internal energy level monotonically
diminishes too.Comment: 6 pages, 10 Figure

HYPER MODEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
In this paper we study the integration of Model
Management and Hypertext systems to produce a Hyper
Model Management System (HMMS). Model Management
Systems constitute a class of software that
is designed to support the construction, storage, retrieval,
and use of models in the context of decision
support systems (DSS). Hypertext systems allow users
to split information into data fragments which the user
cart browse to find information by taking non-linear
paths in computer based texts. It has been suggested
that DSSs should be conceived as environments which
support decision making. We support the view that
such environments can be readily provided for the subtask
of model management by hypertext systems. The
different kinds of model knowledge can be captured
within different types of hypertext nodes and the relationships
among these can be maintained by hypertext
links. In this paper we describe some aspects of
model management where hypertext will have a significant
impact. However, plain hypertext is ineffective
in dealing with the dynamic nature of information in
model management tasks where data is revised, models
executed, and reports are created on the fly. Dynamic
domains require dynamic hypertexts. In this paper we
also study the requirements for dynamic hypertexts.
These can be satisfied within the class of generalized
hypertext systems by using special hypertext nodes and
links which we describe. We explore different architectures
to integrate MMS and Hypertext systems to
obtain HMMSs. This paper emphasizes the need for a
shift to integrating Model Management and hypertext
technologies.Information Systems Working Papers Serie
