Micromegas TPC studies at high magnetic fields using the charge dispersion signal
The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC)
transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including
stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas
Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing
techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector
cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can
achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been
demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmic
ray tests and in a KEK beam test in a 1 Tesla magnet. We have recently tested a
Micromegas-TPC using the charge dispersion readout concept in a high field
super-conducting magnet at DESY. The measured Micromegas gain was found to be
constant within 0.5% for magnetic fields up to 5 Tesla. With the strong
suppression of transverse diffusion at high magnetic fields, we measure a flat
50 micron resolution at 5 Tesla over the full 15 cm drift length of our
prototype TPC.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Membrane-bound β-catenin degradation is enhanced by ETS2-mediated Siah1 induction in Helicobacter pylori-infected gastric cancer cells.
β-catenin has two different cellular functions: intercellular adhesion and transcriptional activity. The E3 ubiquitin ligase Siah1 causes ubiquitin-mediated degradation of the cytosolic β-catenin and therefore, impairs nuclear translocation and oncogenic function of β-catenin. However, the effect of Siah1 on the cell membrane bound β-catenin has not been studied. In this study, we identified that the carcinogenic bacterium H. pylori increased ETS2 transcription factor-mediated Siah1 protein expression in gastric cancer cells (GCCs) MKN45, AGS and Kato III. Siah1 protein level was also noticeably higher in gastric adenocarcinoma biopsy samples as compared to non-cancerous gastric epithelia. Siah1 knockdown significantly decreased invasiveness and migration of H. pylori-infected GCCs. Although, Siah1 could not increase degradation of the cytosolic β-catenin and its nuclear translocation, it enhanced degradation of the membrane-bound β-catenin in the infected GCCs. This loss of membrane-bound pool of β-catenin was not associated with the proteasomal degradation of E-cadherin. Thus, this work delineated the role of Siah1 in increasing invasiveness of H. pylori-infected GCCs
One-Parameter GHG Emission Policy with R&D-based Growth
This document examines the GHG emission policy of regions which use land, labor and emitting inputs in production and enhance their productivity by devoting labor to R&D, but with different endowments and technology. The regions also have different impacts on global pollution. The problem is to organize common emission policy, if the regions cannot form a federation with a common budget and the policy parameters must be uniform for all regions. The results are the following. If a self-interested central planner allocate emission caps in fixed proportion to past emissions (i.e. grandfathering), then it establishes the Pareto optimum, decreasing emissions and promoting R&D and economic growth
Millimeter Wave Technology for Armament Applications .
Use of millimeter wave (MMW) technology in armament systems imposes many restrictions on the size, volume and compactness of these systems in addition to ruggedness and reliable functioning in battlefield environment. This paper discusses the related design and technological issues, particularly in, the context of the sensors developed for smart ammunition and active armour protection systems
Pulmonary Echinococcal Cyst with a Filamentous Fungus Co-Infection
Fungal infections are known to colonize the preexisting lung cavities formed as a result of diseases like tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis and cavitatary neoplasia, mostly encountered in immunocompromised patients. Pulmonary echinococcal cysts have been reported coexistent with cryptococcosis and other saprophytic mycosis, but the coexistence of aspergillosis and echinococcal cyst is extremely rare and occasionally been reported in English literature. Active invasion and proliferation of the fungi in the laminated ectocyst of the echinococcal cyst is very unusual. We report a case of 60 years old immunocompetent female, presented with cough, chest pain and shortness of breath. The chest X- ray showed a large thick walled cavity in the lower and mid zone of right lung with positive water lily sign. Surgical enucleation of the echinococcal cyst revealed aspergilloma involving the cavity with massive invasion of laminated ectocyst by filamentous fungus, morphologically resembling an Aspergillus species and was further treated with Itraconazole for 3 months. This unique coexistence of active pulmonary echinococcosis and aspergillosis is being reported because of its rarity and clinical importance for its management. Keywords: Aspergillosis, echinococcosis, echinococcal cyst, pulmonary, mycosis
Quantum phase transition in quantum wires controlled by an external gate
We consider electrons in a quantum wire interacting via a long-range Coulomb
potential screened by a nearby gate. We focus on the quantum phase transition
from a strictly one-dimensional to a quasi-one-dimensional electron liquid,
that is controlled by the dimensionless parameter , where is the
electron density and is the characteristic length of the transverse
confining potential. If this transition occurs in the low-density limit, it can
be understood as the deformation of the one-dimensional Wigner crystal to a
zigzag arrangement of the electrons described by an Ising order parameter. The
critical properties are governed by the charge degrees of freedom and the spin
sector remains essentially decoupled. At large densities, on the other hand,
the transition is triggered by the filling of a second one-dimensional subband
of transverse quantization. Electrons at the bottom of the second subband
interact strongly due to the diverging density of states and become
impenetrable. We argue that this stabilizes the electron liquid as it
suppresses pair-tunneling processes between the subbands that would otherwise
lead to an instability. However, the impenetrable electrons in the second band
are screened by the excitations of the first subband, so that the transition is
identified as a Lifshitz transition of impenetrable polarons. We discuss the
resulting phase diagram as a function of .Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, minor changes, published versio
Spatial Resolution of a Micromegas-TPC Using the Charge Dispersion Signal
The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for the International Linear Collider will
need to measure about 200 track points with a resolution close to 100 m. A
Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC could achieve the desired
resolution with existing techniques using sub-millimeter width pads at the
expense of a large increase in the detector cost and complexity. We have
recently applied a new MPGD readout concept of charge dispersion to a prototype
GEM-TPC and demonstrated the feasibility of achieving good resolution with pads
similar in width to the ones used for the proportional wire TPC. The charge
dispersion studies were repeated with a Micromegas TPC amplification stage. We
present here our first results on the Micromegas-TPC resolution with charge
dispersion. The TPC resolution with the Micromegas readout is compared to our
earlier GEM results and to the resolution expected from electron statistics and
transverse diffusion in a gaseous TPC.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, to appar in the Proceedings of the 2005

Measurement of electron screening in muonic lead
Energies of the transitions between high-lying (n≥6) states of muonic lead were accurately determined. The results are interpreted as a ∼2% test of the electron screening. The agreement between experiment and theory is good if it is assumed that the refilling of the electron K shell is fast. The present results furthermore severely restrict possible ionization of the electron L shell
