    El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado analiza el concepto de títere, su historia y su relación y relevancia para transmitir valores y saberes a través de los tiempos y las generaciones. Con este trabajo se busca recuperar este recurso en el aula mostrando sus beneficios en la captación de la atención del alumnado y describiendo diferentes propuestas didácticas que se pueden llevar a cabo con “Los Mu(si)ñecos”, títeres de elaboración propia, en el aula de música.This thesis analyzes the concept of puppet, its history and its relation and importance in the transmission of wisdom and moral values throughout the times and generations.     Structural and energy determinants in protein-RNA docking

    Deciphering the structural and energetic determinants of protein-RNA interactions harbors the potential to understand key cell processes at molecular level, such as gene expression and regulation. With this purpose, computational methods like docking aim to complement current biophysical and structural biology efforts. However, the few reported docking algorithms for protein-RNA interactions show limited predictive success rates, mainly due to incomplete sampling of the conformational space of both the protein and the RNA molecules, as well as to the difficulties of the scoring function in identifying the correct docking models. Here, we have tested the predictive value of a variety of knowledge-based and energetic scoring functions on a recently published protein-RNA docking benchmark and developed a scoring function able to efficiently discriminate docking decoys. We first performed docking calculations with the bound conformation, which allowed us to analyze the problem in optimal conditions. We found that geometry-based terms and electrostatics were the most important scoring terms, while binding propensities and desolvation were much less relevant for the scoring of protein-RNA models. This is in contrast with what we observed for protein-protein docking. The results also showed an interesting dependence of the predictive rates on the flexibility of the protein molecule, which arises from the observed higher positive charge of flexible interfaces and provides hints for future development of more efficient protein-RNA docking methods.This work is supported by grant BIO2013-48213-R from Plan Nacional I+D+i (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness).     Comparison of particulate matter emission and soluble matter collected from combustion cigarettes and heated tobacco products using a setup designed to simulate puffing regimes

    An experimental setup was designed and optimized to collect particulate matter suspended in cigarettes smoke or in the aerosol generated during the use of heated tobacco products (HTPs). The setup is mainly based on a gas washing flask containing water where particulate matter and soluble compounds can be trapped, resembling interaction in the body. This system allows to perform puffing experiments in conditions similar to those of the Health Canada Intense puffing regime. In the study, cigarettes and Heets (in IQOS heater) from Philip Morris Products were used. Complementary characterization of this particulate matter has been extracted from experiments on a gas washing flask containing isopropanol. Total organic carbon analysis, laser diffraction, UV-vis spectrophotometry and transmission electron microscopy measurements have shown that cigarette smoke contains a large number and content of compounds soluble in water and isopropanol, together with solid particles generated during combustion. In contrast, negligible presence of non-combustion related particles was detected in Heets aerosol samples. These facts, together with the higher amount of water soluble compounds and higher number of polyaromatic hydrocarbons detected in the cigarettes smoke, allow to conclude that HTPs are less harmful than combusted cigarettes.The research described in this study was funded by Philip Morris Products S.A., Switzerland (part of Philip Morris International group of companies)

    Antifouling activity of peracetylated cholic acid, a natural bile acid derivative

    The antifouling activity of peracetylated cholic acid (1), a bile acid derivative which was isolated in a previous work as a natural product from the Patagonian sponge Siphonochalina fortis, was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. Toxicity and settlement assays were performed with the mussel Mytilus edulis platensis, while the field trials were carried out by addition of the compound to experimental soluble-matrix paints, which were then tested in the sea. The results obtained in this work show that 1 has a good antifouling activity and low toxicity, and the paints aditivated with 0,6% Wt showed promissory performances in the field trials at the sea. These results confirm the previous hypothesis that the few acetylated and lipophilic bile acid derivatives isolated from marine invertebrates may act as natural antifoulants. Compound 1 is a natural, biodegradable product that can be easily prepared from cholic acid, which in turn can be isolated in industrial scale from cattle bile. All these facts make cholic acid a good scaffold for the preparation of derivatives, which can be natural product-like, effective and sustainable antifouling additives for marine paints and other applications.Fil: Pérez, Miriam.     Caracterización de la Inulina Comercial y su Implementación Alimentaria en Personas con el Trastorno del Espectro Autista.

    It was being shown that including inulin in the daily intake provides benefits for the health of our body, as well as the reduction of gastrointestinal disorders. Problems that are very frequent in people with autism, mainly when they present selectivity to food and who, due to their condition, can live with high levels of stress. Due to its history as a prebiotic, inulin has been recommended and considered as an additional functional ingredient that can help to improve health, under intake conditions of 10 to 20 g per day and with a low caloric level of 1.5 Kcal/g that it can help reduce the possible risks of obesity. In the commercial inulin samples that were analyzed by FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), small bands were observed at 1638cm-1 for sample A and at 1648cm-1 for sample B, these associated with the presence of impurities, so both brands prove to be products with a good degree of purity and that they are products with a source of inulin.Se ha demostrado que el incluir a la inulina en la ingesta diaria proporciona beneficios para la salud de nuestro organismo, así como la disminución de problemas gastrointestinales. Problemas que son muy frecuentes en personas con autismo principalmente al presentar selectividad a los alimentos y que por su condición pueden vivir con altos niveles de estrés. La inulina por sus antecedentes como prebiótico ha sido recomendada y considerada como un ingrediente alimenticio funcional que puede ayudar a la mejora de la salud, en condiciones de ingesta de 10 a 20 g al día y con un bajo nivel calórico de 1.5 Kcal/g que puede ayudarles a disminuir los posibles riesgos de obesidad. En las muestras comerciales de inulina que fueron analizadas por FT-IR (Espectroscopia de Infrarrojo por Transformada de Fourier), se observaron pequeñas bandas en 1638cm-1 para la muestra A y en 1648cm-1 para la muestra B, estas asociadas a la presencia de impurezas, por lo que ambas marcas demostraron ser productos con un buen grado de pureza y que son productos con fuente de inulina

    Estrés parental y desarrollo infantil en niños prematuros

    El presente trabajo trata de analizar si los niveles de estrés experimentados por los progenitores inciden sobre el desarrollo mental y motor de un grupo de niños nacidos demasiado pequeños o demasiado pronto. Participaron 19 niños y niñas nacidos, con menos de 36 semanas de gestación (media 29,84) y menos de 1500 gramos (media 1099,89), en el Hospital 12 de octubre de Madrid cuyos padres y madres consintieron participar en este trabajo. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron la Escala BSID-II para obtener los índices del desarrollo mental y psicomotor en los niños cuando alcanzaron la edad 2 años y la PSI de Abidin, para valorar el estrés total de los padres y madres participantes, así como su percepción de Malestar Paterno, Interacción Disfuncional y Niño Difícil. Los datos fueron sometidos a análisis de comparaciones de medias para muestras independientes. Los resultados indican que existen diferencias significativas entre los altos y los bajos niveles de estrés en cuanto a su incidencia en el desarrollo. En general, tanto en las madres como en los padres, cuando se obtiene una puntuación baja de estrés, existe un mejor desarrollo mental y psicomotor en los niños. Estos resultados se discuten a la luz de las investigaciones sobre el tema y se analizan las implicaciones para la elaboración de programas de atención temprana.The current document analyze if the parent’s stress levels influence the mental and motor development of a children’s group being born too young or too small. The participants were 19 preterm children born at the “Hospital 12 de Octubre” of Madrid with less than 36 gestation weeks (mean 29,84) and 1500 grammes (mean 1099,89), whose parents were agree to take part in this study. The employed instruments were the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II) to obtain the mental and psychomotor index scores of the toddlers at 2 years old; and the Parenting Stress Index Short Form (PSI) of Abidin. to assess the Total Stress of the parents, and their perception of Parental Distress, Dysfunctional Parent-Child Interactions and Difficult Child also. The obtained data were analyzed comparing the means of two independent samples. The results show that there are significant differences in the children’s development depending of the high or low parental stress levels. In general terms, when parents have low levels of stress, a better mental and psychomotor development is observed in their children. These results are discussed in the light of other researches about the issue, being considered as well, their implications for the implementation of early intervention programs.peerReviewe

    First data on Ornithodoros moubata Aquaporins: structural, phylogenetic and immunogenic characterisation as vaccine targets

The elimination of O. moubata populations from anthropic environments is expected to improve the prevention and control of these diseases. Tick vaccines have emerged as a sustainable method for tick control, and tick aquaporins (AQPs) are promising targets for tick vaccines due to their vital functions, immunogenicity and ease of access by neutralising host antibodies. This study aimed at the systematic identification of the AQPs expressed by O. moubata (OmAQPs) and their characterisation as vaccine targets. Therefore, AQP coding sequences were recovered from available transcriptomic datasets, followed by PCR amplification, cloning, sequence verification and the analysis of the AQP protein structure and epitope exposure. Seven OmAQPs were identified and characterised: six were aquaglyceroporins, and one was a water-specific aquaporin. All of these were expressed in the salivary glands and midgut and only three in the coxal glands. Epitope exposure analysis identified three extracellular domains in each AQP, which concentrate overlapping B and T cell epitopes, making them interesting vaccine targets.     Connectivity of coastal and neritic fish larvae to the deep waters

    Four ichthyoplankton cruises and backward tracking experiments were conducted to study the connectivity of coastal and neritic fish larvae over the continental slope and to the oceanic deep-water region of the western Gulf of Mexico. Distribution patterns of larval abundance at oceanic stations showed higher abundance and the presence of larvae at oceanic stations during two cruises. Larval transport was simulated using outputs of a data assimilation model that represented the flow conditions during each cruise. Higher abundances of larvae of coastal and neritic species at oceanic stations agreed with offshore transport inferred from numerical experiments seeding particles over different spatial scales (stations vs. transects). Satellite images of surface chlorophyll were consistent with the circulation patterns indicated by the model, indicating filaments of shelf waters were transported toward the transects with higher larval abundances. Particle tracking experiments indicated that the northwestern shelf provinces of Perdido, Tamaulipas, and Texas were the main source of propagules to the oceanic region, while shelf provinces of northern Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatan, Louisiana, and Mississippi-Alabama contributed much less. The length and intensity of the shelf front limited ichthyoplankton cross-shelf exchange during some cruises, and mesoscale anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies advected larvae to the deep-water region during others. The agreement between the spatial distribution of fish larvae and the simulated larval transport confirm that circulation models are a valuable tool for examining potential dispersal pathways of neritic species, as long as similar spatial and temporal scales as the ones used in this study are considered.Fil: Cano Compaire, Jesus.     The Flavonoid Quercetin Reverses Pulmonary Hypertension in Rats

    Quercetin is a dietary flavonoid which exerts vasodilator, antiplatelet and antiproliferative effects and reduces blood pressure, oxidative status and end-organ damage in humans and animal models of systemic hypertension. We hypothesized that oral quercetin treatment might be protective in a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Three weeks after injection of monocrotaline, quercetin (10 mg/kg/d per os) or vehicle was administered for 10 days to adult Wistar rats. Quercetin significantly reduced mortality. In surviving animals, quercetin decreased pulmonary arterial pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy and muscularization of small pulmonary arteries. Classic biomarkers of pulmonary arterial hypertension such as the downregulated expression of lung BMPR2, Kv1.5, Kv2.1, upregulated survivin, endothelial dysfunction and hyperresponsiveness to 5-HT were unaffected by quercetin. Quercetin significantly restored the decrease in Kv currents, the upregulation of 5-HT2A receptors and reduced the Akt and S6 phosphorylation. In vitro, quercetin induced pulmonary artery vasodilator effects, inhibited pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. In conclusion, quercetin is partially protective in this rat model of PAH. It delayed mortality by lowering PAP, RVH and vascular remodeling. Quercetin exerted effective vasodilator effects in isolated PA, inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in PASMCs. These effects were associated with decreased 5-HT2A receptor expression and Akt and S6 phosphorylation and partially restored Kv currents.     Effect of the Preparation Method (Sol-Gel or Hydrothermal) and Conditions on the TiO2 Properties and Activity for Propene Oxidation

    Since the two most commonly used methods for TiO2 preparation are sol-gel (SG) and hydrothermal (HT) synthesis, this study attempts to compare both methods in order to determine which one is the most suitable to prepare photocatalysts for propene oxidation. In addition, this work studies how the concentration of the HCl used for hydrolysis of the TiO2 precursor affects the properties of the obtained materials. Also, the effect of avoiding the post-synthesis heat-treatment in a selection of samples is investigated. The photocatalysts are characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and UV-vis spectroscopy, and the study tries to correlate the properties with the photocatalytic performance of the prepared TiO2 samples in propene oxidation. TiO2 materials with high crystallinity, between 67% and 81%, and surface area (up to 134 m2/g) have been obtained both by SG and HT methods. In general, the surface area and pore volume of the TiO2-HT samples are larger than those of TiO2-SG ones. The TiO2-HT catalysts are, in general, more active than TiO2-SG materials or P25 in the photo-oxidation of propene.
