The Role of Sun Symbols in the Burial Rite of the Middle Bronze Age Vatya Culture
The case study investigates the burial customs of the Middle Bronze Age Vatya culture in the Carpathian Basin. It aims to deliver a comparative analysis of the archaeological finds and characteristics of several cemeteries where communities cremated and buried their dead in urns. It also examines the ways grave artefacts are placed, and the shape and ornamentation of ceramics. It also gives a concise review on beliefs related to cremation. The case study aims at presenting just how much information the seemingly monotone burial customs of the Vatya culture can offer on their belief system by analysing the shapes, arrangements and ornamentations of buried artefacts. The decoration of grave ceramics often includes solar – light symbols, therefore, the author argues that the regular use of light symbols has a significant role in their belief system, especially in the deceased’s journey to the Otherworld
Different ways of using space: traces of domestic and ritual activities at a Late Neolithic settlement at Sormás-Török-földek
The present paper studies questions of the use of space in various ways on the basis of data obtained from a site at Sormás-Török-földek. The significance of this site lies in the fact that two enclosures were excavated here which differ in character, but which are in a close relationship physically and chronologically. They demonstrate precisely the radical change, which took place in the mode of space-use, representing two important stages of the progression as a result of which the separation of territories used for domestic and ritual activities were physically manifested.V članku predstavljamo različna vprašanja o rabi prostora na različne načine, in sicer na podlagi podatkov iz najdišča Sormás-Török-földek.
Megjegyzések a lengyeli kultúra körárkainak tájolásához
A késő neolit lengyeli
kultĂşra egyik legvitatottabb rendeltetĂ©sű Ă©pĂtmĂ©nyei az Ăşgynevezett körárkok. A
földrajzi távolságok dacára a kultúra elterjedési területén belül az alaprajzok
közös vonásai közös szabályok meglétét, szándékos tervezést sugallnak a
A közel szimmetrikusan elhelyezett kapuk
gyakran nĂ©ztek a fĹ‘ világtájak felĂ©, Ăgy tájolásuk alaposabb tanulmányozása
jelentőséget kapott. Osztrák és szlovák kutatók vizsgálataik ere_
Symbolism and traditions in the society of the Bell Beaker - Csepel group
In the present paper,
we called attention to a so far unknown religious idea of the Bell Beaker -
Csepel group after observations made at the excavation of Budapest-Albertfalva,
archaeo-astronomical analyses, two special shards with channelled knob ornaments
and their analogues. The schematic representation of the Sun symbol appears,
although rarely, in the accompanying material (“Begleitkeramik”) of the Csepel
group (on grave ceramics, the Albertfalva fragment was probably originally
intended to be placed in a grave). The custom of the building of round houses
in the western group of the Bell Beaker culture and the burials with round
ditches in the eastern group make us think. The orientation of the houses
according to the winter solstice at Albertfalva and the existence of a
territory enclosed by a round ditch between the houses render the role of the
Sun in the daily and religious life of the population of the Csepel group even
more emphatic. The representation of the Sun in various forms (gold discs, incised
Sun motives) can be observed on nearly the entire territory of the Bell Beaker
culture yet we do not want to interpret this phenomenon as a Sun cult. The
religious beliefs of the Bell Beaker culture are extremely complicated, complex
and colourful, and Sun, an environmental factor that defines daily life, could
only be an element in it
