Meso-Scale Hydrologic Modeling for Climate Impact Assessments: A Conceptual and A Regresssion Approach
The paper presents two different approaches to hydrologic modeling for Climate Impact Assessments: A conceptual water balance model and a non-parametric regression model. They both are designed for modeling large-scale river basins (Meso-Scale) at a monthly time step and to accept GCM-based climate scenarios defined as changes in monthly precipitation and temperature. The data requirements for the models are historical, multi-annual series of mean monthly temperature, precipitation, and runoff. These data are used to calibrate the models. GCM data or user-defined sensitivity of climatic variable must be provided for the assessment analyses. The paper describes the theoretical bases of both approaches and presents the results of a comparison of the application of the models to the Vistula River Basin in Poland
Assessment, technology and democratic education in the age of data
This paper contends that powerful techniques to manipulate data, enabled by technological and economic developments, can be easily co-opted to serve the restrictive frameworks of hyper-controlling, managerial accountability that characterise current cultures of summative assessment in education. In response to these challenges, research is urgently needed to increase our understanding of the impact that assessments have on individuals and society. The paper concludes that social research ought to contribute to the identification of responses – educational, technological and political – that can minimise inequalities and potential abuses through the encouragement of data literacy across society
Re-Inventing Public Education:The New Role of Knowledge in Education Policy-Making
This article focuses on the changing role of knowledge in education policy making within the knowledge society. Through an examination of key policy texts, the Scottish case of Integrated Children Services provision is used to exemplify this new trend. We discuss the ways in which knowledge is being used in order to re-configure education as part of a range of public services designed to meet individuals' needs. This, we argue, has led to a 'scientization' of education governance where it is only knowledge, closely intertwined with action (expressed as 'measures') that can reveal problems and shape solutions. The article concludes by highlighting the key role of knowledge policy and governance in orienting education policy making through a re-invention of the public role of education

Kąpiele cytrynianowe są szczególnie atrakcyjne jako nietoksyczne kąpiele dla elektrolitycznego osadzania stopów. Osadzanie
prowadzono w różnych warunkach hydrodynamicznych przy zastosowaniu wirującej elektrody dyskowej (WED). Stosowany
potencjał, warunki hydrodynamiczne, pH, skład roztworu i dodatki składników organicznych miały silny wpływ na skład
chemiczny, strukturę fazową i teksturę osadzonych warstw. Obliczono równowagi fazowe w układzie Cu-In-Sn i przedstawiono
izoplety diagramu fazowego. W zakresie 25 do 400° C przeprowadzono badania termicznej stabilności osadów na podkładzie
miedzianym przy zastosowaniu strukturalnej analizy rentgenowskiej.The In-Sn alloys are interesting as the materials used in the lead-free interconnection technology and as the replacement
materials for toxic cadmium layers. This work investigated the indium-tin layers electrodeposited from the complex citrate
solutions. The citrate electrolytic baths are especially attractive as the non-toxic baths for the electrodeposition of alloys. The
depositions were conducted in various hydrodynamic conditions by means of the rotating disc electrode technique (RDE). It was
observed that the applied potential, hydrodynamic conditions, pH, composition of solution and additional organic compounds
have a strong effect on the chemical composition, the phase structure and the texture of the electrodeposited layers. The phase
equilibria in the Cu-In-Sn ternary system were calculated and the isopleths of the phase diagram were presented. The X-ray
structural investigations of the thermal stability of the deposits on the copper substrate were carried out in the temperature
range from 25 to 400° C
pMHC affinity controls duration of CD8+ T cell-DC interactions and imprints timing of effector differentiation versus expansion.
During adaptive immune responses, CD8(+) T cells with low TCR affinities are released early into the circulation before high-affinity clones become dominant at later time points. How functional avidity maturation is orchestrated in lymphoid tissue and how low-affinity cells contribute to host protection remains unclear. In this study, we used intravital imaging of reactive lymph nodes (LNs) to show that T cells rapidly attached to dendritic cells irrespective of TCR affinity, whereas one day later, the duration of these stable interactions ceased progressively with lowering peptide major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) affinity. This correlated inversely BATF (basic leucine zipper transcription factor, ATF-like) and IRF4 (interferon-regulated factor 4) induction and timing of effector differentiation, as low affinity-primed T cells acquired cytotoxic activity earlier than high affinity-primed ones. After activation, low-affinity effector CD8(+) T cells accumulated at efferent lymphatic vessels for egress, whereas high affinity-stimulated CD8(+) T cells moved to interfollicular regions in a CXCR3-dependent manner for sustained pMHC stimulation and prolonged expansion. The early release of low-affinity effector T cells led to rapid target cell elimination outside reactive LNs. Our data provide a model for affinity-dependent spatiotemporal orchestration of CD8(+) T cell activation inside LNs leading to functional avidity maturation and uncover a role for low-affinity effector T cells during early microbial containment
The Obliteration of Truth by Management: Badiou, St. Paul and the Question of Economic Managerialism in Education
This paper considers the questions that Badiou’s theory of the subject poses to cultures of economic managerialism within education. His argument that radical change is possible, for people and the situations they inhabit, provides a stark challenge to the stifling nature of much current educational climate. In 'Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism', Badiou describes the current universalism of capitalism, monetary homogeneity and the rule of the count. Badiou argues that the politics of identity are all too easily subsumed by the prerogatives of the marketplace and unable to present, therefore, a critique of the status quo. These processes are, he argues, without the potential for truth. What are the implications of Badiou’s claim that education is the arranging of ‘the forms of knowledge in such a way that truth may come to pierce a hole in them’ (Badiou, 2005, p. 9)? In this paper, I argue that Badiou’s theory opens up space for a kind of thinking about education that resists its colonisation by cultures of management and marketisation and leads educationalists to consider the emancipatory potential of education in a new light
Diffuse interstellar bands towards ο Per and ξ Per
Spectroscopic characteristics of interstellar matter vary strongly with the direction to the target star. Spectra of oPer and ξ Per contain many prominent and weak diffuse interstellar bands as well as absorption lines of some identiffed interstellar atoms and molecules. Using echelle optical spectra of these bright and moderately reddened stars we selected well detectable diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). We measured intensities of all well noticeable absorption features to compare them with their counterparts observed in spectra of the other target stars
An analysis of pupil concerns regarding transition into higher education.
Transitioning to higher education is often a stressful experience, with incoming students facing similar issues year after year. This chapter presents two years of data collection regarding the concerns of Computing secondary school pupils when considering their upcoming transition into the first year of higher education. Over the two-year period, it can be seen that pupils continue to demonstrate concerns regarding topics related to money, jobs and course achievement as opposed to those related to environment or social issues. The consistency between relative areas of concern over the two years is striking, further suggesting that an understanding of these issues might help higher education institutions to better support their incoming students
