    Perturbative Computation of Glueball Superpotentials for SO(N) and USp(N)

    We use the superspace method of hep-th/0211017 to prove the matrix model conjecture for N=1 USp(N) and SO(N) gauge theories in four dimensions. We derive the prescription to relate the matrix model to the field theory computations. We perform an explicit calculation of glueball superpotentials.     Effectiveness of ranitidine bismuth citrate and proton pump inhibitor based triple therapies of Helicobacter pylori in Turkey

    Background : Helicobacter pylori infection is the main cause of gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer disease, MALT lymphoma, and adenocarcinoma of the stomach. The reported prevalence of H. pylori in the adult population in Turkey is 67.6%–81.3%. A national meta-analysis showed that the average H. pylori eradication rate with proton pump inhibitor-based triple regimens in Turkey had decreased from 84% in 1997 to 55.3% in 2004, suggesting a need to evaluate alternative regimens. Materials and methods : The study was a prospective, single-center trial with a parallel group design. After the selection procedure, consecutive out-patients were assigned to one of six study groups using random sampling numbers. All patients received amoxicillin 1,000 mg b.i.d. and clarithromycin 500 mg b.i.d. along with ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.i.d., or omeprazole 20 mg b.i.d., or lansoprazole 30 mg b.i.d., or rabeprazole 20 mg b.i.d., or pantoprazole 40 mg b.i.d., or esomeprazole 40 mg b.i.d. for 14 days. Results : When we look at the eradication rates of the treatment groups, only two groups (ranitidine bismuth citrate and rabeprazole groups) had eradication rates greater than 80%, both at intention to treat and per protocol analyses. The other four groups (omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, and esomeprazole groups) showed statistically significant lower eradication rates both at intention to treat (between 57.6 and 66.7%) and per protocol (between 60.3 and 72.1%) analyses when compared with ranitidine bismuth citrate and rabeprazole groups (p<.05). Conclusion : Ranitidine bismuth citrate and/or rabeprazole based triple therapies must be preferred for the first-line treatment of H. pylori infection

    A search for heavy Kaluza-Klein electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC

    The feasibility for the observation of a certain leptonic Kaluza-Klein (KK) hard process in {\em pp} interactions at the LHC is presented. Within the S1/Z2S^1/Z_2 TeV1^{-1} extra dimensional theoretical framework with the focus on the KK excitations of the Standard Model γ\gamma and Z0Z^0 gauge bosons, the hard-process, ffˉn(γ/Z)nFFˉf\bar f \to \sum_n\left(\gamma^*/Z^*\right)_n \to F \bar F, has been used where ff is the initial state parton, FF the final state lepton and (γ/Z)n\left(\gamma^*/Z^*\right)_{n} is the nthn^{\rm th} KK excitation of the γ/Z0\gamma/Z^0 boson. For this study the analytic form for the hard process cross section has been independently calculated by the authors and has been implemented using the {\sc Moses} framework. The Moses framework itself, that has been written by the authors, was used as an external process within the {\sc Pythia} Monte Carlo generator which provides the phase space generation for the final state leptons and partons from the initial state hadrons, and the simulation of initial and final state radiation and hadronization. A brief discussion of the possibility for observing and identifying the unique signature of the KK signal given the current LHC program is also presented.Comment: 16 pages 10 figures, MCnet number: MCnet/10/06, Accepted by JHE

    Prevention of incisional hernia post emergency laparotomy: A time to change? A case series.

    Introduction: Complicated acute diverticulitis (CAD) is a surgical challenge in which a mini-invasive approach may be offered. Laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (LPL) was introduced as an alternative to sigmoid resection. However, the role of LPL is still under debate. Aim of this study was to evaluate which surgical strategy between LPL and Laparoscopic Sigmoidectomy (LS) could give better outcomes in CAD. Materials and methods: This prospective, observational, multicenter study lasted from 2015 until to 2018. Inclusion criteria: left colonic or sigmoid CAD (modified Hinchey’’s classification: grade II not responder to conservative treatment and grade III). Exclusion criteria: septic shock, immunodepression, previous multiple surgical operations, modified Hinchey’’s grade I and IV,\15 and[85 years. Comparisons were made between LPL and LS groups. Results: 66 patients were enrolled: 28 (42%) had LPL and 38 (58%) LS. Following sigmoidectomy, 24 pts (63%) had a primary anastomosis and 14 pts (37%) an end-colostomy (Hartmann’’s procedure). There were no significant differences regarding age, male gender rate and mean BMI (p = 0.314, p = 0.07, p = 0.129, respectively). ASA score [2 was significantly higher in LPL (p = 0.05). The number of previous episodes of diverticulitis and the mean C-Reactive Protein dosage were similar (p = 0.756 and 0.846). Mannheim Peritonitis Index was significantly higher in LPL (0.004). No differences were found regarding to the distribution of Hinchey’’s grades II and III (p = 0.727). 1 (4%) patient in LPL and 5 pts (13%) in LS needed a conversion to open surgery (p = 0.181). Overall, the morbidity rates were 33% in LPL and 18% in LS (p = 0.169). Organ space infection (30% vs 3%, p = 0.002) and the re-operation rates (18.5% vs 0; p = 0.006) resulted significantly higher in the LPL group. Mortality was nihil. Mean post-op length of stay was 11.4 days in LPL and 8.23 days in LS (p = 0.088). Diverticular recurrence was significantly increased in LPL (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Compared to LS, LPL is associated with increased ongoing sepsis, emergency re-intervention and recurrence of acute diverticulitis.     Ancient mammalian and plant DNA from Late Quaternary stalagmite layers at Solkota Cave, Georgia

    Metagenomic analysis is a highly promising technique in paleogenetic research that allows analysis of the complete genomic make-up of a sample. This technique has successfully been employed to archaeological sediments, but possible leaching of DNA through the sequence limits interpretation. We applied this technique to the analysis of ancient DNA (aDNA) from Late Quaternary stalagmites from two caves in Western Georgia, Melouri Cave and Solkota. Stalagmites form closed systems, limiting the effect of leaching, and can be securely dated with U-series. The analyses of the sequence data from the Melouri Cave stalagmite revealed potential contamination and low preservation of DNA. However, the two Solkota stalagmites preserved ancient DNA molecules of mammals (bear, roe deer, bats) and plants (chestnut, hazelnut, flax). The aDNA bearing layers from one of the two Solkota stalagmites were dated to between ~84 ka and ~56 ka BP by U-series. The second Solkota stalagmite contained excessive detrital clay obstructing U-series dating, but it also contained bear bones with a minimum age of ~50 BP uncalibrated years and ancient DNA molecules. The preservation of authentic ancient DNA molecules in Late Quaternary speleothems opens up a new paleogenetic archive for archaeological, paleontological and paleoenvironmental research

    Quantum Symmetries and Marginal Deformations

    We study the symmetries of the N=1 exactly marginal deformations of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. For generic values of the parameters, these deformations are known to break the SU(3) part of the R-symmetry group down to a discrete subgroup. However, a closer look from the perspective of quantum groups reveals that the Lagrangian is in fact invariant under a certain Hopf algebra which is a non-standard quantum deformation of the algebra of functions on SU(3). Our discussion is motivated by the desire to better understand why these theories have significant differences from N=4 SYM regarding the planar integrability (or rather lack thereof) of the spin chains encoding their spectrum. However, our construction works at the level of the classical Lagrangian, without relying on the language of spin chains. Our approach might eventually provide a better understanding of the finiteness properties of these theories as well as help in the construction of their AdS/CFT duals.Comment: 1+40 pages. v2: minor clarifications and references added. v3: Added an appendix, fixed minor typo

    Non-Hermitian SUSY Hydrogen-like Hamiltonians with real spectra

    It is shown that the radial part of the Hydrogen Hamiltonian factorizes as the product of two not mutually adjoint first order differential operators plus a complex constant epsilon. The 1-susy approach is used to construct non-hermitian Hamiltonians with hydrogen spectra. Other non-hermitian Hamiltonians are shown to admit an extra `complex energy' at epsilon.     We present several supergravity solutions corresponding to both Dp, as well as Dp-Dp' systems, in NS-NS and R-R PP-wave background originating from AdS_3 times S^3 times R^4. The Dp brane solutions, p=1,..,5 are fully localized, whereas Dp-Dp' are localized along common transverse directions.     Within the framework of thermofield dynamics, the wavefunctions of the thermalized displaced number and squeezed number states are given in the coordinate representation.
