    Nitrogen Uptake in Soils under Different Water Table Depths

    A mathematical model was used to examine the interactions of NH4+ transport to rice roots, as well as to calculate root length densities required to relate N uptake to concentrations of NH4 + in solution around the rooting medium for three water treatments: water table 30 cm below the surface, 15 cm below the surface and a flooded system. Measured uptake was greatest for the plants under the 30 cm treatment, followed by the 15 cm treatment, then the flooded treatment. Solution concentrations were highest under the flooded treatment followed by the 30 cm treatment, then the 15 cm treatment. Calculated root length densities were greatest for the plants under the 30 cm water table treatment, followed by those under the 15 cm treatment, then the flooded treatment. Measured root length densities were similarly greatest for the plants under the 30 cm water table treatment, followed by those under the 15 cm water table depth treatment, then the flooded treatment. However, differences between measured and calculated root length densities became significant for all treatments after 30 days of treatment imposition. Transport rates varied with treatments but uptake rates did not reflect these differences in transport rates, thus, transport through the growth medium did not limit uptake of nitrogen by the plants

    Watching the Smoke Rise Up: Thermal Efficiency, Pollutant Emissions and Global Warming Impact of Three Biomass Cookstoves in Ghana

    In Ghana, about 73% of households rely on solid fuels for cooking. Over 13,000 annual deaths are attributed to exposure to indoor air pollution from inefficient combustion. In this study, assessment of thermal efficiency, emissions, and total global warming impact of three cookstoves commonly used in Ghana was completed using the International Workshop Agreement (IWA) Water Boiling Test (WBT) protocol. Statistical averages of three replicate tests for each cookstove were computed. Thermal efficiency results were: wood-burning cookstove: 12.2 ± 5.00% (Tier 0); coalpot charcoal stove: 23.3 ± 0.73% (Tier 1–2); and Gyapa charcoal cookstove: 30.00 ± 4.63% (Tier 2–3). The wood-burning cookstove emitted more CO, CO2, and PM2.5 than the coalpot charcoal stove and Gyapa charcoal cookstove. The emission factor (EF) for PM2.5 and the emission rate for the wood-burning cookstove were over four times higher than the coalpot charcoal stove and Gyapa charcoal cookstove. To complete the WBT, the study results showed that, by using the Gyapa charcoal cookstove instead of the wood-burning cookstove, the global warming impact could be potentially reduced by approximately 75% and using the Gyapa charcoal cookstove instead of the coalpot charcoal cookstove by 50%. We conclude that there is the need for awareness, policy, and incentives to enable end-users to switch to, and adopt, Gyapa charcoal cookstoves for increased efficiency and reduced emissions/global warming impact

    An Economic Assessment of Energy Poverty and Households Welfare in Ghana

    This study sought to investigate the effects of household socio-economic factors on energy poverty in Ghana. Strong evidence points to the fact that energy is a driver of economic growth, hence, the presence of energy poverty is a major barrier to achieving the development objectives of any country. A binomial logistic model was used to analyse the effects of parametric factors on energy poverty. Data of 16,048 households from the Ghana Living Standards Survey 6, a nationally representative survey, served as the basis for the logistics analysis.  The results showed that the energy poverty rate in Ghana stands at 38% and households spend around 22% of income on modern energy forms. In addition, energy poverty is more prevalent in rural areas with them being 5.7 times more likely to be energy poor. Also, the results indicated that determinants including age and household size had a negative effect on energy poverty while a higher level of education, income, and welfare had non-decreasing effects on energy poverty. The study concludes that a high welfare level reduces the likelihood that a household is energy poor. To close the disparity between the rural and urban areas with regards to energy access, development of off-grid energy schemes should be implemented largely in rural areas.     Fredholm integral equations of the first kind are considered by applying regularization method and the homotopy analysis method. This kind of integral equations are considered as an ill-posed problem and for this reason needs an effective method in solving them. This method first transforms a given Fredholm integral equation of the first kind to the second kind by the regularization method and then solves the transformed equation using homotopy analysis method. Approximation of the solution will be of much concern since it is not always the case to get the solution to converge and the existence of the solution is not always guaranteed as this kind of Fredholm integral equation is not well-posed

    Profile of cancer patients’ seen at Korle Bu teaching hospital in Ghana (A cancer registry review)

    BACKGROUND: Though cancer has become a major source of morbidity and mortality globally, few countries in Sub Saharan Africa have data on cancer incidence. This study aims to describe the profile of cancers seen at the Korle Bu teaching hospital which is a major referral centre in Ghana for cancers and other health conditions. Data for the study was obtained from the cancer registry of the hospital and covered the period from January 2012 to December 2012. The public health unit actively collects data on all cancer cases presenting to any department/unit of the hospital to feed the cancer registry. RESULTS: A total of 1136 patients with cancer were studied. Their ages ranged from 1 year to 92 years with a mean of 52.3 ± 15.9 years and a median of 54 years. Patients were predominantly female (70.2%) and majority had attained secondary level of education or higher. The most prevalent cancers seen in men were those of prostate, pharynx and colorectal while in the females, the corresponding cancers were breast, cervix and uterus. CONCLUSIONS: Breast and prostate cancers were the commonest among females and males respectively who presented with cancer at the Korle Bu teaching hospital in 2012

    Public choice theory and rental housing: an examination of rental housing contracts in Ghana

    This paper extends both the literature on rental housing in Ghana and the global literature on the critique of public choice analyses in terms of focus, methods, and positioning. It argues that, contrary to the assumption that all housing policy changes are driven by internal national processes, in the case of Ghana at least, neither tenants (through their use of their greater numbers) nor landlords (through the use of their stronger financial and hence political power) exclusively influence housing policy. Both parties have some power, but landlords use theirs to change rents arbitrarily and decide whom to invite or keep as tenants, while tenants seek to use their power by lodging complaints with the state, albeit to little effect as the power of landlords is overwhelming. There is a strong basis to call into question the public choice argument that it is fair for landlords to extract windfall rent from tenants since their efforts or talents do not increase rent

    Performance Analysis and Drying Kinetics of Maize in an AflaSTOP Dryer

    The performance of an AflaSTOP dryer which utilises biomass energy for drying maize was investigated. The drying behaviour of maize grains in the dryer was also investigated using ten (10) thin-layer mathematical models. The models were compared based on coefficient of determination (R2) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values between experimental and predicted moisture ratios. At an average drying air temperature of 50ËšC and drying air velocity of 2.5 m/s, maize at average moisture content (MC) of 17.5% (wb) was dried to an average MC of 11.5% (wb) in three (3) hours. The drying and thermal efficiency were calculated as 81.1% and 29.6% respectively. Overall, drying took place in the falling rate period. The Logistics model was best to describe the thin-layer drying kinetics of maize in the dryer with R2 value of 0.9902 and RMSE value of 0.04908

    Multi-locational assessment of some physicochemical attributes and amylase activity of sweetpotato varieties and elite materials in Ghana.

    As part of the breeding objectives to select sweetpotato materials with acceptable quality attributes for adaptation and subsequent utilisation in Ghana, the total amylase activity and physicochemical attributes (flesh colour, Beta-carotene, dry matter, starch and sugars) of 13 sweetpotato genotypes across five locations were evaluated. Near Infrared Reflectance Spectrometry (NIRS), was mainly employed in the study. The flesh colour of the materials ranged from white to deep orange while thedry matter content ranged from 20% to 44%. Starch, fructose, glucose and sucrose contents were 46– 74, 0.3 - 5, 2 – 8 and 9 – 22% respectively. Apomuden, a deep orange type, recorded the highesttotal sugar content of 36% and the lowest dry matter and starch content of 20% and 46% respectively. Hi-starch variety had the highest dry matter (45%), starch (74%) and the lowest sugar (11%). Dry matter content correlated positively with starch content whilst orange colour intensity was inversely proportional to dry matter content. The outcome of the study supports the fact that sweet potato contains high extractable amylases. Amylase activity of the materials was fairly stable across locations. Okomkum, Faara, Santom Pona, Kemb, and Cemsa 74-228 recorded the highest activity while Hi-starch, Apomuden, Mohc, and 199062.1 were low. There was no correlation between raw sugars and amylase activity. The potential of individual cultivars for food industry will be discussed in relation to starch content and extractable amylases

    Research and Development for Improved Cassava Varieties in Ghana: Farmers’ Adoption and Effects on Livelihoods

    The importance of Cassava in the food systems of Ghanaians cannot be underestimated. As a main staple crop, Cassava contributes about 22% and 30% to the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP) and daily calories intake respectively. Per capita consumption of 152 kg makes it the highest among all food crops. Due to Cassava’s importance, there have been lots of attention paid to it by the Government and Donor agencies towards its improvement. This has yielded substantial results in terms of the development of cassava varieties and good agronomic practices. This chapter reviewed cassava technologies development in Ghana, adoption of these technologies by smallholder farmers, and livelihood implications. Results generated showed that Research and Development since 1993 has developed, released, and disseminated 25 new cassava varieties to smallholder farmers. Average cassava yields have increased from about 14 t/ha in 2009 to 21 t/ha in 2018. Partial budget analysis showed that smallholder farmers’ profitability has increased over the years from GH₵644.32 (about US111)in2009toGH₵5243.27(aboutUS 111) in 2009 to GH₵5243.27 (about US 904) in 2018. Again, the crop is gradually gaining attention as an industrial crop for flour, starch, and alcohol production, a drive that would further improve on returns to farmers. It is a food security crop because it is robust, produces more per unit area, and versatile for multiple usages in household foods and derivatives. It is recommended that continuous policy consideration on cassava in national agricultural agenda setting is essential
