Performance Analysis of a Dual-Hop Cooperative Relay Network with Co-Channel Interference

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the performance of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative relay network in the presence of direct link between the source and destination and multiple co-channel interferences (CCIs) at the relay. Specifically, we derive the new analytical expressions for the moment generating function (MGF) of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the average symbol error rate (ASER) of the relay network. Computer simulations are given to confirm the validity of the analytical results and show the effects of direct link and interference on the considered AF relay network

Monte Carlo simulation of melting transition on DNA nanocompartment

DNA nanocompartment is a typical DNA-based machine whose function is dependent of molecular collective effect. Fundamental properties of the device have been addressed via electrochemical analysis, fluorescent microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Interesting and novel phenomena emerged during the switching of the device. We have found that DNAs in this system exhibit a much steep melting transition compared to ones in bulk solution or conventional DNA array. To achieve an understanding to this discrepancy, we introduced DNA-DNA interaction potential to the conventional Ising-like Zimm-Bragg theory and Peyrard-Bishop model of DNA melting. To avoid unrealistic numerical calculation caused by modification of the Peyrard-Bishop nonlinear Hamiltonian with the DNA-DNA interaction, we established coarse-gained Monte Carlo recursion relations by elucidation of five components of energy change during melting transition. The result suggests that DNA-DNA interaction potential accounts for the observed steep transition.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Trajectory optimization of unmanned aerial vehicle in dynamic soaring

    Get PDF
An aircraft can extract energy from a gradient wind field by dynamic soaring. The paper presents trajectory optimization of an unmanned aerial vehicle for dynamic soaring by numerical analysis and validates the theoretical work through flight test. The collocation approach is used to convert the trajectory optimization problem into parameters optimization. The control and state parameters include lift coefficient, bank angle, positions, flight path angle, heading angle, and airspeed, which are obtained from the parameter optimization software. To validate the results of numerical simulation, the dynamic soaring experiment is also performed and experimental data are analyzed. This research work shows that the unmanned aerial vehicle can gain enough flight energy from the gradient wind field by following an optimal dynamic soaring trajectory. Meanwhile, the variation of flight path angle, heading angle, and airspeed has a significant influence on the energy transform. The solution can provide theoretical guide to unmanned aerial vehicles for extracting maximum energy from gradient wind fields. </jats:p

microRNA-10b enhances pancreatic cancer cell invasion by suppressing TIP30 expression and promoting EGF and TGF-β actions

Increased microRNA-10b (miR-10b) expression in the cancer cells in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a marker of disease aggressiveness. In the present study, we determined that plasma miR-10b levels are significantly increased in PDAC patients by comparison with normal controls. By gene profiling, we identified potential targets downregulated by miR-10b, including Tat-interacting protein 30 (TIP30). Immunoblotting and luciferase reporter assays confirmed that TIP30 was a direct miR-10b target. Downregulation of TIP30 by miR-10b or siRNA-mediated silencing of TIP30 enhanced epidermal growth factor (EGF)-dependent invasion. The actions of miR-10b were abrogated by expressing a modified TIP30 cDNA resistant to miR-10b. EGF-induced EGF receptor (EGFR) tyrosine phosphorylation and extracellular signal–regulated kinase phosphorylation were enhanced by miR-10b, and these effects were mimicked by TIP30 silencing. The actions of EGF in the presence of miR-10b were blocked by EGFR kinase inhibition with erlotinib and by dual inhibition of PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3′-kinase) and MEK. Moreover, miR-10b, EGF and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) combined to markedly increase cell invasion, and this effect was blocked by the combination of erlotinib and SB505124, a type I TGF-β receptor inhibitor. miR-10b also enhanced the stimulatory effects of EGF and TGF-β on cell migration and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and decreased the expression of RAP2A, EPHB2, KLF4 and NF1. Moreover, miR-10b overexpression accelerated pancreatic cancer cell (PCC) proliferation and tumor growth in an orthotopic model. Thus, plasma miR-10b levels may serve as a diagnostic marker in PDAC, whereas intra-tumoral miR-10b promotes PCC proliferation and invasion by suppressing TIP30, which enhances EGFR signaling, facilitates EGF–TGF-β cross-talk and enhances the expression of EMT-promoting genes, whereas decreasing the expression of several metastasis-suppressing genes. Therefore, therapeutic targeting of miR-10b in PDAC may interrupt growth-promoting deleterious EGF–TGF-β interactions and antagonize the metastatic process at various levels

Design of a low-noise aeroacoustic wind tunnel facility at Brunel University

    Get PDF
This paper represents the design principle of a quiet, low turbulence and moderately high speed aeroacoustic wind tunnel which was recently commissioned at Brunel University. A new hemi-anechoic chamber was purposely built to facilitate aeroacoustic measurements. The wind tunnel can achieve a maximum speed of about 80 ms-1. The turbulence intensity of the free jet in the potential core is between 0.1–0.2%. The noise characteristic of the aeroacoustic wind tunnel was validated by three case studies. All of which can demonstrate a very low background noise produced by the bare jet in comparison to the noise radiated from the cylinder rod/flat plate/airfoil in the air stream. The constructions of the aeroacoustic wind tunnel and the hemi-anechoic chamber are financially supported by the School of Engineering and Design at Brunel University

Heat conduction in graphene flakes with inhomogeneous mass interface

Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we study the heat conduction in graphene flakes composed by two regions. One region is mass-loaded and the other one is intact. It is found that the mass interface between the two regions greatly decreases the thermal conductivity, but it would not bring thermal rectification effect. The dependence of thermal conductivity upon the heat flux and the mass difference ratio are studied to confirm the generality of the result. The interfacial scattering of solitons is studied to explain the absence of rectification effect.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Mitigate data skew caused stragglers through ImKP partition in MapReduce

    Get PDF
Speculative execution is the mechanism adopted by current MapReduce framework when dealing with the straggler problem, and it functions through creating redundant copies for identified stragglers. The result of the quicker task will be adopted to improve the overall job execution performance. Although proved to be effective for contention caused stragglers, speculative execution can easily meet its bottleneck when mitigating data skew caused stragglers due to its replication nature: the identical unbalanced input data will lead to a slow speculative task. The Map inputs are typically even in size according to the HDFS block configuration, therefore the skew caused stragglers happen mainly in the Reduce phase because of the unknown intermediate key distribution. In this paper, we focus on mitigating data skew caused Reduce stragglers, propose ImKP, an Intermediate Key Pre-processing framework that enables the even distributed partition for Reduce inputs. A group based ranking technique has been developed that dramatically decreases the pre-processing time, and ImKP manages to eliminate this timing overhead through parallelizing the pre-processing with the file uploading procedure (from local file system to HDFS). For jobs that take input directly from HDFS, ImKP minimizes the overhead by storing the mapping result on every node within the cluster for reuse. Experiments are conducted on different datasets with various workloads. Results show that, compared to the popular hash partition, ImKP can dramatically decrease Reduce skew, achieving a 99.8% reduction in the coefficient of variation of the input sizes in average, and improve up to 29.37% job response performance

Numerical investigation on hydrodynamic performance of a novel shaftless rim-driven counter-rotating thruster considering gap fluid

    Get PDF
Shaftless rim-driven thruster (RDT) has recently become the research focus for marine propulsion, primarily due to low vibration, low noise, and energy saving as its advantage. This study is based on CFD theory and used the Ansys-Fluent software to examine the hydrodynamic performance of a novel rim-driven counter-rotating thruster (RDCRT). It takes a No.19A+Ka4-70 duct propeller and a 20 kW RDT as examples, as it verifies the feasibility of the simulation method. It establishes three geometric models for RDCRT's hydrodynamic performance to determine whether it is necessary to consider the motor stator/rotor gap. It examines the flow distribution characteristics of the gap fluid friction force and flow channel and investigates the gap's influence on the hydrodynamic performance. Relevant case studies indicate that, when considering the gap, the calculation outcomes of the simulation model are between the stationary model and the rotational model of the rotor inner wall when ignoring the gap. In the Forward and Aft regions, the total frictional power of the gap channel correspondingly accounts for 1.7% and 1.35% of the rated power. Additionally, compared to situations with a gap, the pressure coefficient of the inner surface of the Forward and Aft rim without a gap is more significant. Thus, the hydrodynamic simulation model should not ignore the gap. For the RDCRT, the thrust coefficient, the torque coefficient, and the maximum efficiency value are more significant than those of the single-propeller RDT, hence validating its advantages
