    Effet antibactérien de l’extrait aqueux de l’écorce de Terminalia glaucescens Planch ex Benth (Combretaceae) sur la croissance in vitro des entérobactéries productrices de bêta-lactamases à spectre élargi (EBLSE)

    Les bacteries productrices de beta-lactamases a spectre elargi sont responsables des echecs therapeutiques a infection bacterienne. Cette etude vise a evaluer les effets antibacteriens de lfextrait aqueux du macere d'fecorce de tige de Terminalia glaucescens Planch ex Benth (Combretaceae) sur huit enterobacteries productrices de beta-lactamases a spectre elargi (EBLSE) et deux souches de reference de Escherichia coliATCC. Les methodes de diffusion et de dilution sur Muller-Hinton ont permis dfevaluer l'factivite antibacterienne de l'fextrait. L'factivite  antibacterienne in vitro de l'fextrait aqueux de l'fecorce de tige de T.glaucescens est plus elevee que celle de la ceftriaxone (30 µg) et de la cefotaxime (30 µg) vis-a-vis des souches bacteriennes. Toutes ces souches sont resistantes aux deux antibiotiques, a l''fexception de celles de E. coli ATCC 25922 et 35218. L'fextrait aqueux de T. glaucescens est actif sur les 10 souches. Les zones d'finhibition a 200 mg/ml sont comprises entre 13±0,6 a 19,3±0,6 mm. Les CMI de l'extrait aqueux varient de 1,56 a 50 mg/ml. L'fextrait est bactericide sur toutes les souches apres 24 et 48 heures d'fincubation. Cette etude a montre que l'extrait de T. glaucescens pourrait etre utilise dans le traitement des maladies infectieuses.Mots cles: Terminalia glaucescens, extrait aqueux, activite antibacterienne

    New Middle to ?Late Jurassic dinosaur tracksites in the Central High Atlas Mountains, Morocco

    Besides bones, fossil tracks and trackways are important sources of knowledge about dinosaur palaeobiology. Here, we report three new tracksites from two different synclines in the Imilchil area, Central High Atlas, Morocco. The tracks and trackways are preserved in fluvial deposits in different levels of the Isli Formation (Early Bathonian–?Upper Jurassic), and contain impressions made by sauropods, theropods and ornithopods, as well as tracks that might represent bird-like non-avian theropod dinosaurs. In addition to traditional field measurements, three-dimensional digital models of the track sites were created using photogrammetry. These new tracksites add to the rich faunal ichnoassemblage already recorded from the High Atlas Mountains and North Africa, which is considerably richer than the contemporaneous body fossil record, and also provide new data on dinosaurs–substrate interactions

    A shift from Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) with bendiocarb to Long-Lasting Insecticidal (mosquito) Nets (LLINs) associated with changes in malaria transmission indicators in pyrethroid resistance areas in Benin

    BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) was implemented in the department of Ouémé-Plateau, southern Benin, in 2008 and withdrawn in 2011, when long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) were distributed to the communities that were previously targeted by IRS. Did the LLIN strategy provide a better level of protection against malaria transmission than IRS? METHODS: Entomological surveillance was carried out to assess indicators of transmission risk during the last year of IRS and the first year after the LLIN intervention was put in place (2010–2011). Mosquito biting density was sampled by human landing collection (HLC). Females of Anopheles gambiae s.l. were dissected to estimate the parity rates and the blood meal index. A subsample of the An. gambiae s.l. collection was tested for presence of Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. In addition, window exit traps and pyrethrum spray catches were performed to assess exophagic behavior of Anopheles vectors. RESULTS: There were significant increases in all the indicators following withdrawal of IRS. Vector biting density (p<0.001) and longevity (OR=3.81[3.01-4.82] 95% CI; p<0.001) of the An. gambiae s.l. increased significantly; so too did the blood meal index (OR=1.48 [1.1-1.99] 95% CI; p<0.001). Entomological inoculation rate, after IRS withdrawal at one surveillance site, Adjohoun, rose two fold (9.0 infected bites/person/9 months (Apr-Dec 2011) versus 3.66 infective bites/person during the 9 months preceding IRS (Apr-Dec 2010). A second site, Missérété, experienced a six-fold increase after IRS cessation (15.1 infective bites/person/9 months versus 2.41 during IRS). Exophily after IRS cessation decreased significantly in all areas (p<0.001) suggesting that mosquitoes were more likely to rest in houses with LLINs, than in houses subjected to IRS. CONCLUSION: LLINs did not impact on indicators of transmission to the same levels as did IRS after IRS withdrawal

    Phytochemical and nutritional properties of sumac (Rhus coriaria): a potential ingredient for developing functional foods

Available on open access from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordSumac (Rhus coriaria) is a flowering plant that is widely consumed for its promoting health benefits and used in food preparations as a spice in the Mediterranean region. It is a high shrub or small tree with imparipinnate leaves, villus and red fruits with one-seeded drupe, and small greenish-white flowers. The nutraceutical and pharmaceutical potential of sumac makes it a remarkable functional food. In this review, the phytochemical and nutritional properties of sumac as an under valorized functional food have been discussed. Flavonoids, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, and organic acids have been reported as dominant phytochemicals in sumac, which are well known for their pharmacological properties that attract many consumers to commonly choose sumac in their diet as well as food preparations. The remarkable volatile compounds present in sumac give it a unique aroma that increases its acceptance by consumers and potential use in the food industry. Sumac has been evaluated for a broad range of nutritional and pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anticancer, anti-infertility, and neuroprotective potential.     Impact of three years of large scale Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) interventions on insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Benin

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Benin, Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the cornerstones of malaria prevention. In the context of high resistance of <it>Anopheles gambiae </it>to pyrethroids, The National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) has undertaken a full coverage of IRS in a no-flood zone in the Oueme region, coupled with the distribution of LLINs in a flood zone. We assessed the impact of this campaign on phenotypic resistance, <it>kdr </it>(knock-down resistance) and <it>ace-1<sup>R </sup></it>(insensitive acetylcholinesterase) mutations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Insecticides used for malaria vector control interventions were bendiocarb WP (0.4 g/m<sup>2</sup>) and deltamethrin (55 mg/m<sup>2</sup>), respectively for IRS and LLINs. Susceptibility status of <it>An. gambiae </it>was assessed using World Health Organization bioassay tests to DDT, permethrin, deltamethrin and bendiocarb in the Oueme region before intervention (2007) and after interventions in 2008 and 2010. <it>An. gambiae </it>specimens were screened for identification of species, molecular M and S forms and for the detection of the West African <it>kdr </it>(L1014F) as well as <it>ace-1<sup>R </sup></it>mutations using PCR techniques.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The univariate logistic regression performed showed that <it>kdr </it>frequency has increased significantly during the three years in the intervention area and in the control area. Several factors (LLINs, IRS, mosquito coils, aerosols, use of pesticides for crop protection) could explain the selection of individual resistant <it>An. gambiae</it>. The <it>Kdr </it>resistance gene could not be the only mechanism of resistance observed in the Oueme region. The high susceptibility to bendiocarb is in agreement with a previous study conducted in Benin. However, the occurrence of <it>ace-1<sup>R </sup></it>heterozygous individuals even on sites far from IRS areas, suggests other factors may contribute to the selection of resistance other than those exerted by the vector control program.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of this study have confirmed that <it>An.gambiae </it>have maintained and developed the resistance to pyrethroids, but are still susceptible to bendiocarb. Our data clearly shows that selection of resistant individuals was caused by other insecticides than those used by the IRS and LLINs.</p

    Severe Skin Forms of Psoriasis in Black Africans: Epidemiological, Clinical, and Histological Aspects Related to 56 Cases

    Bacground. Psoriasis is an erythematosquamous dermatosis of chronic development. In sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have been focused on complicated forms of psoriasis. Objective. The aim is to describe epidemiological, clinical, and histological features of severe skin forms of psoriasis in Cote d’Ivoire. Material and Methods. The study was both cross-sectional and descriptive, that focused on patient admitted to the dermatology unit for complicated psoriasis, from January 1st, 1986, to December 31th, 2007. Results. Fifty-six patients admitted to hospital for severe skin forms of psoriasis were recorded and included in our study over 7.503 patients hospitalized during the study period. They represented 0.75% of cases. The average age was 39.6 ± 3.3 years. There were 49 male (87.5%) and 7 female patients (12.5%) with a sex ratio of 7. At socioprofessional level, 48 patients (87.5%) were from category 1. Patients’ history was dominated by the psoriasis vulgaris. Physical and general signs were dominated by itching (58.9%). The three severe skin forms were observed with predominant erythrodermic psoriasis (60.7%). Fifteen patients (34.9%) were HIV positive. Conclusion. Severe skin forms of psoriasis are rare in our setting. But in the quarter of HIV-positive patients, they are dominated by the erythrodermic psoriasis

    Les échecs thérapeutiques dus à l’antibiorésistance bactérienne pose un problème majeur de santé publique. Parmi les solutions qui s’offrent, les plantes médicinales constituent une bonne alternative. Ainsi, nous avons expérimenté au cours de cette étude le potentiel inhibiteur de l’huile essentielle d’Ocimum gratissimum sur diverses souches multi- résistantes d’entérobactéries productrices de BLSE à partir de prélèvements de milieux biologiques tels qu’urines, plaies et pus. L’huile essentielle de ladite plante obtenue par entrainement à la vapeur d’eau avec un rendement de 0,26% a été analysée par la méthode chromatographique CPG / MS suivie de la détermination des paramètres physico-chimiques. Les principaux composés de l’huile étaient le p-cymène (52,0%) et le carvacrol (22,88%). La recherche des gènes de résistance a été réalisée grâce aux méthodes de biologie moléculaire. La sensibilité des souches aux extraits a été évaluée par la méthode de diffusion des disques sur gélose. Le test antibactérien effectué sur un total de 30 souches productrices de BLSE isolées a révélé l’efficacité inhibitrice de l’huile essentielle d’Ocimum gratissimum dans la prise en charge de diverses infections

    Polyonyx-like tracks from Middle-?Upper Jurassic red beds of Morocco: Implications for sauropod communities on southern margins of tethys

A new dinosaur tracksite is reported from continental red beds of the Jurassic (Late Bathonian-?Callovian) Isli Formation along the northern flank of the Aït Ali ou Ikkou Syncline of the Imilchil area, Central High Atlas, Morocco. The succession was deposited in a fluvio-lacustrine environment, and contains at least fourteen track-bearing levels. The diverse dinosaur-dominated ichnofauna includes the footprints of crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, theropods, sauropods and ornithischians, together with numerous invertebrate traces. Here, we focus on a long sauropod trackway, which comprises nine consecutive manus-pes sets preserved as concave epireliefs. The low heteropody and asymmetry of manus prints with a large digit I (pollex) impression oriented medially, and a large triangular claw trace, which is posteriorly oriented, are characteristic of the ichnogenus Polyonyx. Different from typical Polyonyx is the narrow gauge pattern compared to the wide gauge observed in the type trackway from Portugal. Additional material from Morocco, similar to Polyonyx, comprises the trackway of a very small (?juvenile) individual found close to the main trackway, as well as a short trackway from a different locality in the Isli Formation. Our data from the Moroccan High Atlas indicates the presence of basal eusauropods in the Middle Jurassic-Early Cretaceous interval in the northwestern part of Gondwana for the first time, and suggests they inhabited a lacustrine paleoenvironment
