Diagnostic delay and survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity
The aim of this thesis was to identify the magnitude of the time intervals that
define the pathway of the oral cancer patient from the beginning of the symptoms until diagnosis, and treatment,
and to evaluate their impact on patientsÂŽ survival. For this purpose, we designed an observational survival study,
with an ambispective component. In our study, the hospital interval was a relevant interval in the oral cancer
patientsÂŽ pathway to treatment, representing a fourth of the overall interval, and showing a counterintuitive
association, where those patients with short hospital intervals had significantly higher mortality, due to the waiting
time paradox. Also, the overall time interval has shown a non-monotonic association with oral cancer mortality
Ground-based remote-sensing techniques for diagnosis of the current state and recent evolution of the Monte Perdido Glacier, Spanish Pyrenees
This work combines very detailed measurements from terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), groundbased interferometry radar (GB-SAR) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to diagnose current conditions and to analyse the recent evolution of the Monte Perdido Glacier in the Spanish Pyrenees from 2011 to 2017. Thus, this is currently one of the best monitored small glacier (<0.5 km2) worldwide. The evolution of the glacier surface was surveyed with a TLS evidencing an important decline of 6.1 ± 0.3 m on average, with ice losses mainly concentrated over 3 years (2012, 2015 and 2017). Ice loss is unevenly distributed throughout the study period, with 10â15 m thinning in some areas while unchanged areas in others. GB-SAR revealed that areas with higher ice losses are those that are currently with no or very low ice motion. In contrast, sectors located beneath the areas with less ice loss are those that still exhibit noticeable ice movement (average 2â4.5 cm dâ1 in summer, and annual movement of 9.98 maâ1 from ablation stakes data). GPR informed that ice thickness was generally <30 m, though locally 30â50 m. Glacier thinning is still accelerating and will lead to extinction of the glacier over the next 50 years.E. How does neighbourhood socio-economic status affect the interrelationships between functioning dimensions in first episode of psychosis? A network analysis approach
The links between psychosis and socio-economic disadvantage have been widely studied. No previous study has analysed the interrelationships and mutual influences between functioning dimensions in first episode of psychosis (FEP) according to their neighbourhood household income, using a multidimensional and transdiagnostic perspective. 170 patients and 129 controls, participants in an observational study (AGES-CM), comprised the study sample. The WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) was used to assess functioning, whereas participants' postcodes were used to obtain the average household income for each neighbourhood, collected by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). Network analyses were conducted with the aim of defining the interrelationships between the different dimensions of functioning according to the neighbourhood household income. Our results show that lower neighbourhood socioeconomic level is associated with lower functioning in patients with FEP. Moreover, our findings suggest that âhousehold responsibilitiesâ plays a central role in the disability of patients who live in low-income neighbourhoods, whereas âdealing with strangersâ is the most important node in the network of patients who live in high-income neighbourhoods. These results could help to personalize treatments, by allowing the identification of potential functioning areas to be prioritized in the treatment of FEP according to the patient's neighbourhood characteristic
The interplay between functioning problems and symptoms in first episode of psychosis: an approach from network analysis
The relationship between psychotic symptoms and global measures of functioning has been widely studied. No previous study has assessed so far the interplay between specific clinical symptoms and particular areas of functioning in first-episode psychosis (FEP) using network analysis methods. A total of 191 patients with FEP (age 24.45 ± 6.28 years, 64.9% male) participating in an observational and longitudinal study (AGES-CM) comprised the study sample. Functioning problems were assessed with the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS), whereas the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptom severity. Network analysis were conducted with the aim of analysing the patterns of relationships between the different dimensions of functioning and PANSS symptoms and factors at baseline. According to our results, the most important nodes were âconceptual disorganizationâ, âemotional withdrawalâ, âlack of spontaneity and flow of conversationâ, âdelusionsâ, âunusual thought contentâ, âdealing with strangersâ and âpoor rapportâ. Our findings suggest that these symptoms and functioning dimensions should be prioritized in the clinical assessment and management of patients with FEP. Blue Genes : Synopsis of the workshop organized by ICM-CSIC and BAU to increase engagement and collaboration for Our Ocean and Waters
7 pagesOn October 27th, 2022, the Institut de CiĂšncies del Mar (ICM-CSIC), a marine research institution located in Barcelona, and the College of Arts & Design of Barcelona (BAU), a higher-education centre specialized in arts and design, co-organized the first Blue Genes meeting. This meeting took place virtually in a 3-hour workshop format and counted with more than 50 participants from different locations. Its main goal was to explore in a co-creative way how to reinforce and empower the engagement of people, particularly teenagers and young adults, with our Ocean and Waters and increase networking and collaboration.
