The analogy of the macrocosm and the microcosm in the though of John Calvin

    Get PDF
This thesis is offered as an original investigation into the thought of John Calvin. It maintains that the doctrine of the macrocosm and microcosm furnished Calvin\u27s mind with his metaphysics. It contends that the doctrine is the architecture principle upon which Calvin built his system of thought

Polydimethylsiloxane Substrates for passive UHFRFID Sensors

    Get PDF
PDMS has previously shown to be a suitable substrate for UHF-RFID strain sensor tags due to their elastomer characteristics. However, PDMS has further properties such as polymer swelling which could be utilized in gas sensing. Macroporous PDMS sponges have been proposed as suitable substrates for passive gas sensors. Porous sponges were fabricated using sugar templates and their absorption capacity was investigated along with standard PDMS elastomers. Possible applications could include food package and air quality monitoring

Work design improvement of food steamer at Pau Mira Frozen Food Industry

    Get PDF
Pau Mira is a frozen food company located at kilometer 13, Kampung Tanah Merah, Pagoh Muar, Johor. It was devloped by a family in Kampung Tanah Merah. Pau Mira was initially made and sold daily, nearby the road side. Currently, the brand has continued to flourish in the food industry when its entrepreneur Mr. Misnan Ramijo, succeeded in establishing a company to supply increasingly popular frozen food especially its main product which is the frozen ‘pau mira’. The pau is a traditional and local steamed bun made of flour and yeast with various filling inside. It is also called as bao or baozi which is well known in the chinese cuisine. However, the term pau will be further used in this chapter

MIGRATING FROM PAPER-BASED TO ONLINE LECTURER EVALUATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRY HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: AN ACTIVITY THEORY PERSPECTIVE (27)

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to understand how a developing country Higher Education Institution migrated its paper-based lecturer evaluation to an online one. Information systems research on lecturer evaluations has focussed more on the paper-based evaluations as well as the cost, benefits and factors that contribute to the evaluation process. Less attention has been paid to how online evaluation evolves from paper-based evaluations. To address this research gap, this study employs activity theory and an interpretive case study methodology to investigate how an online lecturer evaluation evolved. The findings show a contradiction within and between students, evaluations guidelines and tools of the lecturer evaluation activity system and how this was used as a source of development and how changes in the elements of the activity systems over time affected the evolution

Sustained expansion of NKT cells and antigen-specific T cells after injection of α-galactosyl-ceramide loaded mature dendritic cells in cancer patients

Natural killer T (NKT) cells are distinct glycolipid reactive innate lymphocytes that are implicated in the resistance to pathogens and tumors. Earlier attempts to mobilize NKT cells, specifically, in vivo in humans met with limited success. Here, we evaluated intravenous injection of monocyte-derived mature DCs that were loaded with a synthetic NKT cell ligand, α-galactosyl-ceramide (α-GalCer; KRN-7000) in five patients who had advanced cancer. Injection of α-GalCer-pulsed, but not unpulsed, dendritic cells (DCs) led to \u3e100-fold expansion of several subsets of NKT cells in all patients; these could be detected for up to 6 mo after vaccination. NKT activation was associated with an increase in serum levels of interleukin-12 p40 and IFN-γ inducible protein-10. In addition, there was an increase in memory CD8+ T cells specific for cytomegalovirus in vivo in response to α-GalCer-loaded DCs, but not unpulsed DCs. These data demonstrate the feasibility of sustained expansion of NKT cells in vivo in humans, including patients who have advanced cancer, and suggest that NKT activation might help to boost adaptive T cell immunity in vivo

Evaluation of trends in a series of halogenated isophthalamides

    Get PDF
The effect of halogens (X) and the pyridine N atom substitution patterns on molecular structure and conformation in a series of isophthalimides is analyzed. The work is based on previous and on-going research on isomer grids of halogenated benzamides. The analysis integrates crystal structure analyses, computational chemistry and conformational analyses together with NMR data and melting point data. The study highlights the structural systematics survey of several halogenated isophthalimides (X-DIPs) as represented by 1 (Scheme; Figures) with only the salient features of the conformations presented herein

Adoptive transfer of cytomegalovirus-specific CTL to stem cell transplant patients after selection by HLA–peptide tetramers

Stem cell transplantation is used widely in the management of a range of diseases of the hemopoietic system. Patients are immunosuppressed profoundly in the early posttransplant period, and reactivation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Adoptive transfer of donor-derived CMV-specific CD8(+) T cell clones has been shown to reduce the rate of viral reactivation; however, the complexity of this approach severely limits its clinical application. We have purified CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells from the blood of stem cell transplant donors using staining with HLA-peptide tetramers followed by selection with magnetic beads. CMV-specific CD8(+) cells were infused directly into nine patients within 4 h of selection. Median cell dosage was 8.6 x 10(3)/kg with a purity of 98% of all T cells. CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells became detectable in all patients within 10 d of infusion, and TCR clonotype analysis showed persistence of infused cells in two patients studied. CMV viremia was reduced in every case and eight patients cleared the infection, including one patient who had a prolonged history of CMV infection that was refractory to antiviral therapy. This novel approach to adoptive transfer has considerable potential for antigen-specific T cell therapy
