This paper constitutes a reviev of the results of investigations on electrolyte solutions in some organic solvents that behaves similarly to water from thermochemical point of vi,»w as well as in some water - organic mixed solvents. The investigations have been carried out in Physical Chemistry Department of University of Łódź in recent years.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę

Greek ricochet? What drove Poles' attitudes to the euro in 2009-2010

We investigate the determinants of support for the euro adoption in Poland in 2009 and 2010. Using two unique survey datasets, collected in December 2009 and June 2010, we estimate ordered and unordered logit models explaining the respondents' attitude to the introduction of the common currency. Whereas the public support has generally declined over this period, probably against the background of sovereign debt crises in the euro area, this decline was concentrated along some dimensions. We find that the declared level of information about the euro is a key driver of this support, both in 2009 and -- even more so -- in 2010, as well-informed respondents tend to be significantly more supportive of the common currency than badly-informed ones. We also find some evidence that political views influence the attitude towards the euro, but they are by no means its main determinant. During the crisis, the conviction of euro being a “strong, stable currency” has faded; instead, a negative attitude started to result from low income, high age and low economic knowledge. Surprisingly, in 2010 a more negative attitude was represented by students, white-collar workers and big city residents. All in all, the public perception of the euro does not seem to be fixed, but evolves with economic and political developments, so that new concerns appear.EMU, attitudes towards the euro, public opinion, ordered logit, unordered logit

Mothers and Daughters: An Exploratory Look into Dora Greenwell’s Revisions of Persephone

    Get PDF
The Greek myth about Persephone remains a powerful narrative of mother-daughter symbiosis and their connection functions as one of the fundamental themes in the literature of the nineteenth century. Few researchers have addressed the problem of representing Persephone in Victorian poetry, focusing on the importance of myth in cultural criticism and the intersection of feminism and revisionism. The following article explores how the mid-Victorian revisions of Persephone serve as a tool of recognition of the challenges that marriage may pose for feminine ties. I specifically concentrate on two poems by the English poet Dora Greenwell – “Demeter and Cora” and “The Garden of Proserpine” – published in 1869. Taking into account psychological studies on familial bonds as well as the psychoanalytic and archetypical reading of the mother-daughter interactions, I offer a detailed investigation of Greenwell’s works that discuss “the fluctuations of symbiosis and separation” (Hirsch 1989, 20). Greenwell reworks the myth of Demeter and Persephone to reflect upon the ever-changing relationship between mothers and daughters as well as to investigate the moment of individual maturation of a married daughter

On the Interpretation of Causality in Granger’s Sense

    Get PDF
The concept of causality formulated in 1969 by C.W.J. Granger is mostly popular in the econometric literature. The central assumption of the concept is the fact that the cause precedes the effect and can help in forecasting the effect. Years of application of Granger causality idea have resulted in many misunderstandings related with the interpretation of the empirical findings. The paper focuses on systematization of the definitions based on Granger concept and their proper interpretation.

Fractal Analysis of Knowledge Organization in Digital Library

    Get PDF
Visualization of the large-scale collections of information became one of the essential purpose in data analysis. The new methods of visualization are increasingly applied as a significant component in scientific research. Particularly qualitative nature of Infoviz studies (Information visualization) can be combined with quantitative character of digital libraries volumes. This paper describes and demonstrates the case of hierarchical structure visualization i.e. visual representation of both classification adopted by ACM (Association for Computing Machinery ) digital library and classification universe. Given maps were processed by nonlinear graphical filters. Finally fractal dimension (FD) and derived techniques have used to analyze the patterns of clusters on the visualization maps. Quantification of output graphical representation by means of fractals makes possible to adjust visualization parameters as well as evaluate initial classification scheme and its dynamical characteristics

Visualizing the scientific information nowadays: the problems and challenges

    Get PDF
In recent years, a comparably fresh research field — information visualization has become commonly available for the researchers of all specialties. Information or knowledge maps play a role of interface for the analysis and intensive study of scientific community and knowledge domains development. The popularity of visualization techniques and interdisciplinary framework has resulted in many problems that have not been solved since the field had emerged. The article introduces the instrumental problems and challenges in this field. Exposing the functions information visualization allows to understand the difficulties and barriers within the whole visualizing process. A particular example of insight into the Polish science map is considered in the context of a new knowledge
