Double photo-ionization of He near a polarizable surface
We calculate the differential cross-section of the direct double
photo-ionization of He physisorbed on a polarizable surface. By including the
influence of the surface potential in the correlated two-electron final state
wavefunction, we show that the differential cross-section carries detailed
information on the electronic correlations at the surface. In particular,
photo-emission along opposite directions, which is prohibited in the free

Symbolic Software for the Painleve Test of Nonlinear Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations
The automation of the traditional Painleve test in Mathematica is discussed.
The package PainleveTest.m allows for the testing of polynomial systems of
ordinary and partial differential equations which may be parameterized by
arbitrary functions (or constants). Except where limited by memory, there is no
restriction on the number of independent or dependent variables. The package is
quite robust in determining all the possible dominant behaviors of the Laurent
series solutions of the differential equation. The omission of valid dominant
behaviors is a common problem in many implementations of the Painleve test, and
these omissions often lead to erroneous results. Finally, our package is

Boot-insole effects on comfort and plantar loading at the heel and fifth metatarsal during running and turning in soccer
Plantar loading may influence comfort, performance and injury risk in soccer boots. This study investigated the effect of cleat configuration and insole cushioning levels on perception of comfort and in-shoe plantar pressures at the heel and fifth metatarsal head region. Nine soccer academy players (age 15.7 ± 1.6 years; height 1.80 ± 0.40 m; body mass 71.9 ± 6.1 kg) took part in the study. Two boot models (8 and 6 cleats) and two insoles (Poron and Poron/gel) provided four footwear combinations assessed using pressure insoles during running and 180° turning. Mechanical and comfort perception tests differentiated boot and insole conditions. During biomechanical testing, the Poron insole generally provided lower peak pressures than the Poron/gel insole, particularly during the braking step of the turn. The boot model did not independently influence peak pressures at the fifth metatarsal, and had minimal influence on heel loads. Specific boot-insole combinations performed differently (P < 0.05). The 8-cleat boot and the Poron insole performed best biomechanically and perceptually, but the combined condition did not. Inclusion of kinematic data and improved control of the turning technique are recommended to strengthen future research. The mechanical, perception and biomechanical results highlight the need for a multi-faceted approach in the assessment of footwear
Metaphoric coherence: Distinguishing verbal metaphor from `anomaly\u27
Theories and computational models of metaphor comprehension generally circumvent the question of metaphor versus âanomalyâ in favor of a treatment of metaphor versus literal language. Making the distinction between metaphoric and âanomalousâ expressions is subject to wide variation in judgment, yet humans agree that some potentially metaphoric expressions are much more comprehensible than others. In the context of a program which interprets simple isolated sentences that are potential instances of crossâmodal and other verbal metaphor, I consider some possible coherence criteria which must be satisfied for an expression to be âconceivableâ metaphorically. Metaphoric constraints on object nominals are represented as abstracted or extended along with the invariant structural components of the verb meaning in a metaphor. This approach distinguishes what is preserved in metaphoric extension from that which is âviolatedâ, thus referring to both âsimilarityâ and âdissimilarityâ views of metaphor. The role and potential limits of represented abstracted properties and constraints is discussed as they relate to the recognition of incoherent semantic combinations and the rejection or adjustment of metaphoric interpretations
Positivity of the English language
Over the last million years, human language has emerged and evolved as a
fundamental instrument of social communication and semiotic representation.
People use language in part to convey emotional information, leading to the
central and contingent questions: (1) What is the emotional spectrum of natural
language? and (2) Are natural languages neutrally, positively, or negatively
biased? Here, we report that the human-perceived positivity of over 10,000 of
the most frequently used English words exhibits a clear positive bias. More
deeply, we characterize and quantify distributions of word positivity for four
large and distinct corpora, demonstrating that their form is broadly invariant
