An analysis of the nuclear interactions of high energy cosmic rays
A study of kaon production in high energy nucleon-air nucleus collisions in the atmosphere; has been made based on the muon momentum spectrum at sea level. Starting from the measured vertical momentum spectrum the spectra at zenith angles between 75Âș and 90Âș have been predicted for various admixtures: of kaons and pions, taking into account all decay modes: of both charged and neutral kaons. The predicted values are compared with the intensities measured using the Durham horizontal muon spectrographs Although the method of computation allows the spectra to be predicted to an accuracy of 1% the present statistical errors on both the vertical and horizontal intensities are such that only an upper limit to R, the ratio of intensities at production of kaons to pions of all charge states, can be given; this has a value of about kOfo over a range of mesoa energies from about 70 G-eV to 1000 GeV. In order to extend the determination of the value of R to lower and higher energies respectively, reviews have been made of measurements of muon polarization at sea level and of the intensity of the electro magnetic cascades at various heights in the atmosphere. Combining the three methods an estimate is given of R over a range of meson energies from. 3 GeV tc 5000 GeV. If R is taken to be independent of energy a value of 20% would fit the data best over the whole energy range, but the error on this value approaches ± 20%.Comparing R with Ri, the observed ratio of numbers of non-pions to pions produced in individual interactions, it is concluded that, provided that the majority of non-pions are kaons, there is no evidence for the effective mean energies of pions and kaons from individual nuclear interactions being different in the range of primary energies from 10 GeV to 10(^5) GeV. Using the measured vertical spectrum of muons the energy spectra and angular distribution of neutrinos at sea level are calculated. The information is used in the interpretation of the preliminary results from, the Tata Institute-Osaka-Durham joint neutrino experiment in progress at the Kolar Gold Field Comparison of observed rates of events with rates predicted from extrapolation to higher energies of machine results on neutrino-nucleus collisions indicates that the cross-section for inelastic interactions continues to rise above 10 GeV Support for this conclusion is provided by the first results of the Case Institute-Witwatersrand University neutrino experiment. The possibility is discussed of detecting the hypothetical Intermediate Boson of weak interactions

JULES-crop: a parametrisation of crops in the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator
Studies of climate change impacts on the terrestrial biosphere have been completed without recognition of the integrated nature of the biosphere. Improved assessment of the impacts of climate change on food and water security requires the development and use of models not only representing each component but also their interactions. To meet this requirement the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) land surface model has been modified to include a generic parametrisation of annual crops. The new model, JULES-crop, is described and evaluation at global and site levels for the four globally important crops; wheat, soybean, maize and rice. JULES-crop demonstrates skill in simulating the inter-annual variations of yield for maize and soybean at the global and country levels, and for wheat for major spring wheat producing countries. The impact of the new parametrisation, compared to the standard configuration, on the simulation of surface heat fluxes is largely an alteration of the partitioning between latent and sensible heat fluxes during the later part of the growing season. Further evaluation at the site level shows the model captures the seasonality of leaf area index, gross primary production and canopy height better than in the standard JULES. However, this does not lead to an improvement in the simulation of sensible and latent heat fluxes. The performance of JULES-crop from both an Earth system and crop yield model perspective is encouraging. However, more effort is needed to develop the parametrisation of the model for specific applications. Key future model developments identified include the introduction of processes such as irrigation and nitrogen limitation which will enable better representation of the spatial variability in yield
On the practicality of time-optimal two-qubit Hamiltonian simulation
What is the time-optimal way of using a set of control Hamiltonians to obtain
a desired interaction? Vidal, Hammerer and Cirac [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002)
237902] have obtained a set of powerful results characterizing the time-optimal
simulation of a two-qubit quantum gate using a fixed interaction Hamiltonian
and fast local control over the individual qubits. How practically useful are
these results? We prove that there are two-qubit Hamiltonians such that
time-optimal simulation requires infinitely many steps of evolution, each
infinitesimally small, and thus is physically impractical. A procedure is given
to determine which two-qubit Hamiltonians have this property, and we show that
almost all Hamiltonians do. Finally, we determine some bounds on the penalty
that must be paid in the simulation time if the number of steps is fixed at a
finite number, and show that the cost in simulation time is not too great.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Sturmian morphisms, the braid group B_4, Christoffel words and bases of F_2
We give a presentation by generators and relations of a certain monoid
generating a subgroup of index two in the group Aut(F_2) of automorphisms of
the rank two free group F_2 and show that it can be realized as a monoid in the
group B_4 of braids on four strings. In the second part we use Christoffel
words to construct an explicit basis of F_2 lifting any given basis of the free
abelian group Z^2. We further give an algorithm allowing to decide whether two
elements of F_2 form a basis or not. We also show that, under suitable
conditions, a basis has a unique conjugate consisting of two palindromes.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure
Alpha scattering and capture reactions in the A = 7 system at low energies
Differential cross sections for He- scattering were measured in
the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available
experimental results for He and H scattering were
analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials.
The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical
S-factors of the capture reactions HeBe and
HLi, and the branching ratios for the transitions into
the two final Be and Li bound states, respectively. For
HeBe excellent agreement between calculated and
experimental data is obtained. For HLi a value
has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value.
For both capture reactions a similar branching ratio of has been obtained.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.C, 34 pages, figures available from one of the

Hydrodynamics of domain growth in nematic liquid crystals
We study the growth of aligned domains in nematic liquid crystals. Results
are obtained solving the Beris-Edwards equations of motion using the lattice
Boltzmann approach. Spatial anisotropy in the domain growth is shown to be a
consequence of the flow induced by the changing order parameter field
(backflow). The generalization of the results to the growth of a cylindrical
domain, which involves the dynamics of a defect ring, is discussed.Comment: 12 revtex-style pages, including 12 figures; small changes before

Curvature effects on the surface thickness and tension at the free interface of He systems
The thickness and the surface energy at the free interface of
superfluid He are studied. Results of calculations carried out by using
density functionals for cylindrical and spherical systems are presented in a
unified way, including a comparison with the behavior of planar slabs. It is
found that for large species is independent of the geometry. The obtained
values of are compared with prior theoretical results and experimental
data. Experimental data favor results evaluated by adopting finite range
approaches. The behavior of and exhibit overshoots
similar to that found previously for the central density, the trend of these
observables towards their asymptotic values is examined.Comment: 35 pages, TeX, 5 figures, definitive versio
Entanglement Transfer via XXZ Heisenberg chain with DM Interaction
The role of spin-orbit interaction, arises from the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya
anisotropic antisymmetric interaction, on the entanglement transfer via an
antiferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg chain is investigated. From symmetrical point
of view, the XXZ Hamiltonian with Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction can be
replaced by a modified XXZ Hamiltonian which is defined by a new exchange
coupling constant and rotated Pauli operators. The modified coupling constant
and the angle of rotations are depend on the strength of Dzyaloshinski-Moriya
interaction. In this paper we study the dynamical behavior of the entanglement
propagation through a system which is consist of a pair of maximally entangled
spins coupled to one end of the chain. The calculations are performed for the
ground state and the thermal state of the chain, separately. In both cases the
presence of this anisotropic interaction make our channel more efficient, such
that the speed of transmission and the amount of the entanglement are improved
as this interaction is switched on. We show that for large values of the
strength of this interaction a large family of XXZ chains becomes efficient
quantum channels, for whole values of an isotropy parameter in the region .Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure

Retrospective testing of 3,232 serum samples from the general population and 518 serum samples from a high-risk group showed no evidence of human exposure to Neospora caninum in England. Results were obtained by using immunofluorescence antibody testing and ELISA to analyze frequency distribution
Discovery of the Binary Pulsar PSR B1259-63 in Very-High-Energy Gamma Rays around Periastron with H.E.S.S
We report the discovery of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission of the
binary system PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 of a radio pulsar orbiting a massive,
luminous Be star in a highly eccentric orbit. The observations around the 2004
periastron passage of the pulsar were performed with the four 13 m Cherenkov
telescopes of the H.E.S.S. experiment, recently installed in Namibia and in
full operation since December 2003. Between February and June 2004, a gamma-ray
signal from the binary system was detected with a total significance above 13
sigma. The flux was found to vary significantly on timescales of days which
makes PSR B1259-63 the first variable galactic source of VHE gamma-rays
observed so far. Strong emission signals were observed in pre- and
post-periastron phases with a flux minimum around periastron, followed by a
gradual flux decrease in the months after. The measured time-averaged energy
spectrum above a mean threshold energy of 380 GeV can be fitted by a simple
power law F_0(E/1 TeV)^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma =
2.7+-0.2_stat+-0.2_sys and flux normalisation F_0 = (1.3+-0.1_stat+-0.3_sys)
10^-12 TeV^-1 cm^-2 s^-1. This detection of VHE gamma-rays provides unambiguous
evidence for particle acceleration to multi-TeV energies in the binary system.
In combination with coeval observations of the X-ray synchrotron emission by
the RXTE and INTEGRAL instruments, and assuming the VHE gamma-ray emission to
be produced by the inverse Compton mechanism, the magnetic field strength can
be directly estimated to be of the order of 1 G.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics on 2 June
