    Are bullies more productive? Empirical study of affectiveness vs. issue fixing time

    Human Affectiveness, i.e., The emotional state of a person, plays a crucial role in many domains where it can make or break a team's ability to produce successful products. Software development is a collaborative activity as well, yet there is little information on how affectiveness impacts software productivity. As a first measure of this impact, this paper analyzes the relation between sentiment, emotions and politeness of developers in more than 560K Jira comments with the time to fix a Jira issue. We found that the happier developers are (expressing emotions such as JOY and LOVE in their comments), the shorter the issue fixing time is likely to be. In contrast, negative emotions such as SADNESS, are linked with longer issue fixing time. Politeness plays a more complex role and we empirically analyze its impact on developers' productivity

    Alq3 coated silicon nanomembranes for cavity optomechanics

    The optomechanical properties of a silicon-nitride membrane mirror covered by Alq3 and Silver layers are investigated. Excitation at two laser wavelengths, 780 and 405 nm, corresponding to different absorptions of the multilayer, is examined. Such dual driving will lead to a more flexible optomechanical operation. Topographic reconstruction of the whole static membrane deformation and cooling of the membrane oscillations are reported. The cooling, observed for blue laser detuning and produced by bolometric forces, is deduced from the optomechanical damping of the membrane eigenfrequency. We determine the presence of different contributions to the photothermal response of the membrane

    Impact of pulsed-wave-Doppler velocity-envelope tracing techniques on classification of complete fetal cardiac cycles

    Fetal echocardiography is an operator-dependent examination technique requiring a high level of expertise. Pulsed-wave Doppler (PWD) is often used as a reference for the mechanical activity of the heart, from which several quantitative parameters can be extracted. These aspects suggest the development of software tools that can reliably identify complete and clinically meaningful fetal cardiac cycles that can enable their automatic measurement. Several scientific works have addressed the tracing of the PWD velocity envelope. In this work, we assess the different steps involved in the signal processing chains that enable PWD envelope tracing. We apply a supervised classifier trained on envelopes traced by different signal processing chains for distinguishing complete and measurable PWD heartbeats from incomplete or malformed ones, which makes it possible to determine the impact of each of the different processing steps on the detection accuracy. In this study, we collected 43 images and labeled 174,319 PWD segments from 25 pregnant women volunteers. By considering seven envelope tracing techniques and the 23 different processing steps involved in their implementation, the results of our study reveal that, compared to the steps investigated in most other works, those that achieve binarisation and envelope extraction are significantly more important (p &lt; 0.05). The best approaches among those studied enabled greater than 98% accuracy on our large manually annotated dataset

    Gender-related factors affecting health seeking for neglected tropical diseases: findings from a qualitative study in Ethiopia

    Background Despite known gender-specific differences in terms of prevalence, transmission and exposure to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), there is limited discussion of the influence of gender in NTD programmes and interventions. There is a paucity of research on how gender interacts with NTD service provision and uptake. This study, part of broader implementation research in Ethiopia, applied a gender lens to health seeking for five NTDs: lymphatic filariasis, podoconiosis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminth infection and trachoma. Methodology/principal findings The study was conducted in a district of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia where the five NTDs are prevalent. A qualitative methodology was adopted to explore participants’ perspectives and experiences. Data generation methods included 20 interviews and four focus group discussions. Community members, volunteer Health Development Army leaders, Health Extension Workers and a range of health workers at the health post, health centre and hospital level (n = 59) were purposively sampled. Interviews and focus group discussions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim into English then analysed through open coding, drawing on constant comparative methods. Gender related factors affected care seeking for NTDs and were described as reasons for not seeking care, delayed care seeking and treating NTDs with natural remedies. Women faced additional challenges in seeking health care due to gender inequalities and power dynamics in their domestic partnerships. Participants recommended raising community awareness about NTDs, however this remains problematic due to gender and social norms around appropriate discourse with members of the opposite gender. Conclusions/significance The findings from this study provide crucial insights into how gender interacts with accessing health services, at different levels of the health system. If we are committed to leaving no one behind and achieving universal health coverage, it is essential to address gender disparities to access and utilisation of interventions delivered by national NTD programmes

    A Longitudinal Study of Anti Micro Patterns in 113 Versions of Tomcat

    Background: Micro patterns represent design decisions in code. They are similar to design patterns and can be detected automatically. These micro structures can be helpful in identifying portions of code which should be improved (anti-micro patterns), or other well-designed parts which need to be preserved. The concepts expressed in these design decisions are defined at class-level; therefore the primary goal is to detect and provide information related to a specific granularity level. Aim: this paper aims to present preliminary results about a longitudinal study performed on anti-micro pattern distributions over 113 versions of Tomcat. Method: we first extracted the micro patterns from the 113 versions of Tomcat, then found the percentage of classes matching each of the six anti-micro pattern considered for this analysis, and studied correlations among the obtained time series after testing for stationarity, randomness and seasonality. Results: results show that the time series are stationary, not random (except for Function Pointer), and that additional studied are needed for studying seasonality. Regarding correlations, only the Pool and Record time series presented a correlation of 0.69, while moderate correlation has been found between Function Pointer and Function Object (0.58) and between Cobol Like and Pool (0.44)

    Implications of return predictability for consumption dynamics and asset pricing

    Two broad classes of consumption dynamics—long-run risks and rare disasters—have proven successful in explaining the equity premium puzzle when used in conjunction with recursive preferences. We show that bounds a-là Gallant, Hansen, and Tauchen that restrict the volatility of the stochastic discount factor by conditioning on a set of return predictors constitute a useful tool to discriminate between these alternative dynamics. In particular, we document that models that rely on rare disasters meet comfortably the bounds independently of the forecasting horizon and the asset returns used to construct the bounds. However, the specific nature of disasters is a relevant characteristic at the 1-year horizon: disasters that unfold over multiple years are more successful in meeting the predictors-based bounds than one-period disasters. Instead, at the 5-year horizon, the sole presence of disasters—even if one-period and permanent—is sufficient for the model to satisfy the bounds. Finally, the bounds point to multiple volatility components in consumption as a promising dimension for long-run risk models
