    Comparison of quantization of charge transport in periodic and open pumps

    We compare the charges transported in two systems, a spatially periodic and an open quantum pump, both depending periodically and adiabatically on time. The charge transported in a cycle was computed by Thouless, respectively by Buttiker et al. in the two cases. We show that the results agree in the limit where the two physical situations become the same, i.e., that of a large open pump.Comment: 7 page

    En 2008 la UNESCO declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad a seis Siedlungen berlinesas. Se trata de un caso único y probablemente irrepetible. De ese modo, unos pocos ejemplos de la muy numerosa vivienda social de los años veinte y treinta de calidad arquitectónica, han quedado protegidos. No obstante, esto supone un problema teórico e historiográfico que sería empobrecedor restringir al ámbito de la recuperación o de la restauración arquitectónica. Estas viviendas, que forman parte sustancial y valiosa de la ciudad, pueden ser considerados objetos en el espacio o testigos de la historia. En cualquier caso, se trata de edificios caracterizados por una fragilidad extrema. ¿Cuenta la cultura arquitectónica con herramientas teóricas y prácticas para hacer frente a estas situaciones? ¿qué posiciones críticas y compromisos conviene adoptar en su conservación

    Aquivion® PFSA-based spray-freeze dried composite materials with SiO2 and TiO2 as hybrid catalysts for the gas phase dehydration of ethanol to ethylene in mild conditions

    Aquivion PFSA resin, a perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer, has been used as a heterogeneous strong acid catalyst for a range of reactions; however, the activity of this material is limited due to the extremely low surface area of the polymer. In this paper we described the one-step synthesis of Aquivion® PFSA-based hybrid materials using heterocoagulation and spray-freeze-drying of sols containing the precursor of the active phases. The intimated encapsulation of different nano-oxides, such as TiO2 and SiO2 in the superacid resin matrix was easily obtained using this technique and compared with similar catalysts prepared by the impregnation conventional route. The approach led to the preparation of porous micro-granules characterised by a high homogeneity in the phase distribution and high surface area. The prepared materials were active and selective for the gas phase dehydration of ethanol to ethylene in mild conditions. The increase of the porosity improved the activity of the composites, compared to the pure Aquivion® PFSA, and allowed to reduce the amount of the superacid resin. Moreover, the type of encapsulated oxide, TiO2 or SiO2, modified the improved performance of the catalysts, having TiO2 the higher efficiency for ethanol conversion and selectivity in ethylene at very low temperature

    In recent years, two adulteration incidents concerning the addition of melamine, a nitrogen-rich industrial small polar compound, to pet food and infant formula products have occurred in China. These issues prompted laboratories to develop methods for the analysis of melamine and related compounds in a wide variety of food products and ingredients. In this context, a CE-ESI-MS method was developed to simultaneously analyze melamine and its related products (ammeline, ammelide and cyanuric acid) that possess close physico-chemical properties. This method allows the simultaneous analysis of both cations and anions in a single run, using CE to divide the run into two time segments in normal polarity mode. For this purpose, ESI polarity was switched once during the run, increasing sensitivity and data quality. The method was applied to spiked powdered milk and melamine-contaminated powdered milk, with two sample preparation procedures

    Neuropsychological and neurophysiological correlates of fatigue in post-acute patients with neurological manifestations of COVID-19: Insights into a challenging symptom

    More than half of patients who recover from COVID-19 experience fatigue. We studied fatigue using neuropsychological and neurophysiological investigations in post-COVID-19 patients and healthy subjects. Neuropsychological assessment included: Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Fatigue Rating Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Apathy Evaluation Scale, cognitive tests, and computerized tasks. Neurophysiological examination was assessed before (PRE) and 2 min after (POST) a 1-min fatiguing isometric pinching task and included: maximum compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude in first dorsal interosseous muscle (FDI) following ulnar nerve stimulation, resting motor threshold, motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude and silent period (SP) duration in right FDI following transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left motor cortex. Maximum pinch strength was measured. Perceived exertion was assessed with the Borg-Category-Ratio scale. Patients manifested fatigue, apathy, executive deficits, impaired cognitive control, and reduction in global cognition. Perceived exertion was higher in patients. CMAP and MEP were smaller in patients both PRE and POST. CMAP did not change in either group from PRE to POST, while MEP amplitudes declined in controls POST. SP duration did not differ between groups PRE, increased in controls but decreased in patients POST. Patients' change of SP duration from PRE to POST was negatively correlated to FSS. Abnormal SP shortening and lack of MEP depression concur with a reduction in post-exhaustion corticomotor inhibition, suggesting a possible GABAB-ergic dysfunction. This impairment might be related to the neuropsychological alterations. COVID-19-associated inflammation might lead to GABAergic impairment, possibly representing the basis of fatigue and explaining apathy and executive deficits

    Native Study of the Behaviour of Magnetite Nanoparticles for Hyperthermia Treatment during the Initial Moments of Intravenous Administration

    Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) present outstanding properties making them suitable as therapeutic agents for hyperthermia treatments. Since the main safety concerns of MNPs are represented by their inherent instability in a biological medium, strategies to both achieve longterm stability and monitor hazardous MNP degradation are needed. We combined a dynamic approach relying on flow field flow fractionation (FFF)-multidetection with conventional techniques to explore frame-by-frame changes of MNPs injected in simulated biological medium, hypothesize the interaction mechanism they are subject to when surrounded by a saline, protein-rich environment, and understand their behaviour at the most critical point of intravenous administration. In the first moments of MNPs administration in the patient, MNPs change their surrounding from a favorable to an unfavorable medium, i.e., a complex biological fluid such as blood; the particles evolve from a synthetic identity to a biological identity, a transition that needs to be carefully monitored. The dynamic approach presented herein represents an optimal alternative to conventional batch techniques that can monitor only size, shape, surface charge, and aggregation phenomena as an averaged information, given that they cannot resolve different populations present in the sample and cannot give accurate information about the evolution or temporary instability of MNPs. The designed FFF method equipped with a multidetection system enabled the separation of the particle populations providing selective information on their morphological evolution and on nanoparticle– proteins interaction in the very first steps of infusion. Results showed that in a dynamic biological setting and following interaction with serum albumin, PP-MNPs retain their colloidal properties, supporting their safety profile for intravenous administration
