Formation of atom wires on vicinal silicon
The formation of atomic wires via pseudomorphic step-edge decoration on
vicinal silicon surfaces has been analyzed for Ga on the Si(112) surface using
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Density Functional Theory calculations. Based
on a chemical potential analysis involving more than thirty candidate
structures and considering various fabrication procedures, it is concluded that
pseudomorphic growth on stepped Si(112), both under equilibrium and
non-equilibrium conditions, must favor formation of Ga zig-zag chains rather
than linear atom chains. The surface is non-metallic and presents quasi-one
dimensional character in the lowest conduction band.Comment: submitte
A survey on managing users' preferences in ambient intelligence
Understanding the importance of preference management in ambient intelligent environments is key to providing systems that are better prepared to meet users' expectations. This survey provides an account of the various ways that preferences have been handled in Artificial Intelligence. Our analysis indicates that most of those techniques lack the ability to handle ambiguity and the evolution of preferences over time. Further exploration shows that argumentation can provide a feasible solution to complement existing work. We illustrate our claim by using an intelligent environment case study
Aperture-free star formation rate of SDSS star-forming galaxies
Large area surveys with a high number of galaxies observed have undoubtedly
marked a milestone in the understanding of several properties of galaxies, such
as star-formation history, morphology, and metallicity. However, in many cases,
these surveys provide fluxes from fixed small apertures (e.g. fibre), which
cover a scant fraction of the galaxy, compelling us to use aperture corrections
to study the global properties of galaxies. In this work, we derive the current
total star formation rate (SFR) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) star-forming
galaxies, using an empirically based aperture correction of the measured flux for the first time, thus minimising the uncertainties associated
with reduced apertures. All the fluxes have been
extinction-corrected using the ratio free from aperture
effects. The total SFR for 210,000 SDSS star-forming galaxies has been
derived applying pure empirical and aperture
corrections based on the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey.
We find that, on average, the aperture-corrected SFR is 0.65dex higher
than the SDSS fibre-based SFR. The relation between the SFR and stellar mass
for SDSS star-forming galaxies (SFR--) has been obtained, together
with its dependence on extinction and equivalent width. We
compare our results with those obtained in previous works and examine the
behaviour of the derived SFR in six redshift bins, over the redshift range . The SFR-- sequence derived here is in
agreement with selected observational studies based on integral field
spectroscopy of individual galaxies as well as with the predictions of recent
theoretical models of disc galaxies
Detecting Determinism in High Dimensional Chaotic Systems
A method based upon the statistical evaluation of the differentiability of
the measure along the trajectory is used to identify in high dimensional
systems. The results show that the method is suitable for discriminating
stochastic from deterministic systems even if the dimension of the latter is as
high as 13. The method is shown to succeed in identifying determinism in

Ga-induced atom wire formation and passivation of stepped Si(112)
We present an in-depth analysis of the atomic and electronic structure of the
quasi one-dimensional (1D) surface reconstruction of Ga on Si(112) based on
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM and STS), Rutherford
Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT)
calculations. A new structural model of the Si(112)6 x 1-Ga surface is
inferred. It consists of Ga zig-zag chains that are intersected by
quasi-periodic vacancy lines or misfit dislocations. The experimentally
observed meandering of the vacancy lines is caused by the co-existence of
competing 6 x 1 and 5 x 1 unit cells and by the orientational disorder of
symmetry breaking Si-Ga dimers inside the vacancy lines. The Ga atoms are fully
coordinated, and the surface is chemically passivated. STS data reveal a
semiconducting surface and show excellent agreement with calculated Local
Density of States (LDOS) and STS curves. The energy gain obtained by fully
passivating the surface calls the idea of step-edge decoration as a viable

Shoulder pain prevalence in competitive swimmers: A pilot study
Objetivos: conocer la prevalencia de dolor de hombro en nadadores de competición, sus características y su relación con factores antropométricos y deportivos. Métodos: estudio de prevalencia. Ciento cuarenta nadadores/as entre 12 y 24 años cumplimentaron un cuestionario durante una fase de entrenamiento específico. Resultados: el 25,7% revelaron padecer dolor de hombro. Se hallaron relaciones estadísticamente significativas entre el dolor de hombro y episodios previos de dolor (p<0,001), experiencia superior a tres años (p=0,014), Índice de Masa Corporal (p=0,015) y la especialidad estilo (p=0,008) y distancia (p=0,011). El dolor fue significativamente más intenso durante la actividad que en reposo (p<0,001). Conclusiones: el dolor de hombro en nadadores de competición entre 12 y 24 años parece ser un problema frecuente mayor Índice de Masa Corporal y a la especialidad del nadadorObjectives: to investigate the prevalence of shoulder pain in competitive swimmers and find out the characteristics of pain as well as its relation to anthropometric and sports factors. There were significant statistical correlations between shoulder pain and previous episodes of pain (p<0.001), more than three years of experience (p=0.014), Body Mass Index (p=0.015) and stroke (p=0.008) and distance (p=0.011) specialty. Pain was statistically correlated with activity (p<0.001). Conclusions: shoulder pain seems to be a frequent and repetitive problem in competitive swimmers between 12 and 24 years old, which increases with years of practice.
