    Sensitivity analysis of flexible pavement performance parameters in the mechanistic-empirical design guide

    The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) was the result of NCHRP project 1-37A. This is a mechanistic-empirical pavement design procedure which uses mechanistic and empirical models, nationally calibrated with information from several databases, especially the national Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) study. This database includes data from pavements located throughout North America.;A large amount of inputs are required in order to perform pavement design with MEPDG. These may be classified into traffic loads, material properties and climate input parameters. The pavement distress mechanisms are too complex to be completely modeled without utilization of empirical data. So, calibration is required to improve the accuracy of the models for local conditions. The recommended approach for calibration includes review of the input data, sensitivity analysis, comparative studies, validation and calibration studies, the modification of the input defaults and calibration coefficients, and the verification of the national calibration by collecting a local validation database. The goal of this calibration is to verify that the performance models accurately predict pavement distress and ride quality. Unfortunately, the collection of the data either for calibration or individual designs requires numerous tests to characterize materials, and the field work for collecting the database to verify the models is laborious.;The main goal of this research is the determination of the most important parameters in the MEPDG. However, MEPDG is so complex and the input parameters are so numerous that the sensitivity analysis methodology must be carefully designed to identify the relative importance of each input variable. This research used space-filling computer experiments with Latin hypercube sampling, standardized regression coefficients, and Gaussian stochastic processes to categorize the relative importance of the flexible pavement performance parameters in MEPDG. The use of these statistical techniques allows analysis of the entire space of the input parameters. Additionally, this project studied the feasibility of this methodology for sensitivity analysis of the MEPDG

    El presente es un estudio cualitativo de caso, llevado a cabo en cuatro instituciones educativas de las localidades de Bosa, Kennedy, Fontibón y Ciudad Bolívar de Bogotá, entre julio de 2012 y junio de 2015. Además, se busca que los niños reconozcan y se empoderen de estas representaciones de identidad cultural, como herencia de los mayores y que finalmente posean la gran responsabilidad de seguir fomentando estos ritmos como parte importante de una lucha que dieron nuestros mayores y que es necesario mantener como una forma de honrarlos por su lucha para que nosotros tengamos la posibilidad de ser parte de una cultura que ha sido defendida con sangre y sacrificios y librando grandes batallas. Por medio de esta investigación se busca que tanto los niños y jóvenes estudiantes se interesen por aprender y reconocer estos ritmos tradicionales como parte de su cultura, que utilizaron los esclavos como métodos de resistencia durante el desarraigo de sus pueblos y costumbres que siempre han estado vivas por décadas en nuestro pacifico colombiano.Traditional songs as an educational Project, seek to evidence the needs of boys and girls at Iberia educational institute in Tumaco, Nariño, to learn and practice this ancestral tradition of afro-descendant peoples of the southern pacific region as a strategy to strengthen their culture. In addition, the objective is for the children to recognize and empower themselves with these representations as a cultural identity that is their inheritance from elder so that they may finally carry on the responsibility of fostering the preservation of these rhythms as an important element of the struggles that our elders have undertaken and that we must maintain; as a form of honoring our elders who struggled so hard so that we may be a part of a culture that has been defended with blood and sacrifice, fighting great battles. For this reason, a great commitment is needed by new generations to keep our culture stronger and alive every day. This research seeks to foster the interest of children and youth in learning and recognizing these traditional rhythms as part of their culture, which enslaved people used as a means of resistance during their experience of uprooting from their people and their custom, and which have been alive for decades in the Colombian pacific

    “I’m not here to push you:” Raising adolescents’ treatment engagement via autonomy support

    More than 45% of adolescents with aggressive behavior problems drop out of treatment prematurely. Building on insights from self-determination theory, we examined in three studies whether clinicians can raise adolescents' treatment engagement by supporting their autonomy. In an interview study (Study 1), clinicians (N = 16; 43.8% female; ages 30–57) spontaneously described 12 times more autonomy-supportive than controlling strategies to engage adolescents. In a preregistered experiment (Study 2), clinicians (N = 68; 88.2% female; ages 23–65) were confronted with videos of adolescents displaying resistance. We manipulated the DSM diagnosis of adolescents to indicate either aggressive behavior problems or other problems. We found that, regardless of diagnosis, clinicians used both autonomy-supportive strategies (57.7% of responses) and controlling strategies (39.3%), suggesting that applying autonomy support can be challenging with any adolescent displaying resistance. In an experimental study (Study 3), adolescents (N = 252; 50.0% female; ages 12–17) reported higher therapeutic alliance (d = 0.95, 95% CI [0.80, 1.10]) and treatment engagement (d = 0.77, 95% CI [0.63, 0.91]) after listening to audio-recorded autonomy-supportive versus controlling responses from clinicians, regardless of whether these adolescents had aggressive behavior problems. Overall, this research suggests that clinicians can raise adolescents’ treatment engagement through autonomy support

    Narcissism is a dynamic form of personality characterized by a pervasive sense of grandiosity and self-importance, and by a need to obtain continuous self-validation from others. Very little is known about its etiology and development. What factors (e.g., temperament, parenting experiences) and processes (e.g., transactions between these factors over time) cause some children to become more narcissistic than others? When does narcissism first emerge, and how does narcissism develop over time? This article describes a framework for research on the etiology and development of narcissism, and recommends ten research priorities. This research should yield fundamental knowledge and should inform intervention efforts to minimize the negative impact narcissistic individuals have on themselves and on others. © 2009 Cambridge University Press
