    Static and dynamic pitching moment measurements were made on a family of constant volume elliptic cones about two fixed axes of oscillation in the NAE helium hypersonic wind tunnel at a Mach number of 11 and at Reynolds numbers based on model length of up to 14 million. Viscous effects on the stability derivatives were investigated by varying the Reynolds number for certain models by a factor as large as 10. The models investigated comprised a 7.75 deg circular cone, elliptic cones of axis ratios 3 and 6, and an elliptic cone with conical protuberances

    Survey of needs and capabilities for wind tunnel testing of dynamic stability of aircraft at high angles of attack

    A survey was conducted relative to future requirements for dynamic stability information for such aerospace vehicles as the space shuttle and advanced high performance military aircraft. High-angle-of-attack and high-Reynolds number conditions were emphasized. A review was made of the wind-tunnel capabilities in North America for measuring dynamic stability derivatives, revealing an almost total lack of capabilities that could satisfy these requirements. Recommendations are made regarding equipment that should be constructed to remedy this situation. A description is given of some of the more advanced existing capabilities, which can be used to at least partly satisfy immediate demands

    Plaquette operators used in the rigorous study of ground-states of the Periodic Anderson Model in D=2D = 2 dimensions

    The derivation procedure of exact ground-states for the periodic Anderson model (PAM) in restricted regions of the parameter space and D=2 dimensions using plaquette operators is presented in detail. Using this procedure, we are reporting for the first time exact ground-states for PAM in 2D and finite value of the interaction, whose presence do not require the next to nearest neighbor extension terms in the Hamiltonian. In order to do this, a completely new type of plaquette operator is introduced for PAM, based on which a new localized phase is deduced whose physical properties are analyzed in detail. The obtained results provide exact theoretical data which can be used for the understanding of system properties leading to metal-insulator transitions, strongly debated in recent publications in the frame of PAM. In the described case, the lost of the localization character is connected to the break-down of the long-range density-density correlations rather than Kondo physics.Comment: 34 pages, 5 figure

    Using the language of polyhedral divisors and divisorial fans we describe invariant divisors on normal varieties X which admit an effective codimension one torus action. In this picture X is given by a divisorial fan on a smooth projective curve Y. Cartier divisors on X can be described by piecewise affine functions h on the divisorial fan S whereas Weil divisors correspond to certain zero and one dimensional faces of it. Furthermore we provide descriptions of the divisor class group and the canonical divisor.     Exotic torus manifolds and equivariant smooth structures on quasitoric manifolds

    In 2006 Masuda and Suh asked if two compact non-singular toric varieties having isomorphic cohomology rings are homeomorphic. In the first part of this paper we discuss this question for topological generalizations of toric varieties, so-called torus manifolds. For example we show that there are homotopy equivalent torus manifolds which are not homeomorphic. Moreover, we characterize those groups which appear as the fundamental groups of locally standard torus manifolds. In the second part we give a classification of quasitoric manifolds and certain six-dimensional torus manifolds up to equivariant diffeomorphism. In the third part we enumerate the number of conjugacy classes of tori in the diffeomorphism group of torus manifolds. For torus manifolds of dimension greater than six there are always infinitely many conjugacy classes.     3D Image Based Structural Analysis of Leather for Macroscopic Structure- Property Simulation

    Content: The intrinsic structure significantly influences the mechanical properties of leather. In consequence, knowledge of leather’s hierarchical structure is essential in order to find the most suited leather for specific application. Leather structure based parameters are of major importance for both manufacturing and leather processing industries. In this respect, intensive structure investigations have been subjected in continuous research work. Quantitative image analysis combined with stochastic micro-structure modelling and numerical simulation of macroscopic properties is a promising approach to gain a deeper understanding of complex relations between material’s micro-structure geometry and macroscopic properties. Key ingredient is a reliable geometric description provided by the quantitative analysis of 3D images of the material micro-structures. For leather, both imaging and image analysis are particularly challenging, due to the multi-scale nature of the leather’s micro-structure. Scales in leather are not well separated. Previously, high resolution computed tomography allowed 3D imaging of purely vegetable tanned leather samples at micro- and submicro- scale. Segmentation of leather structure as well as of typical structural elements in resulting image data is however hampered by a strong heterogeneity caused by lower scale structural information. The first method for automatic segmentation of typical structural elements at varying scales combined morphological smoothing with defining and iteratively coarsening regions using the waterfall algorithm on local orientations. It yields a hierarchical segmentation of the leather into coarse and fine structural elements that can be used to analyze and compare the structure of leather samples. Size and shape of the structural elements as well as their sub-structure yield information, e. g. on undulation, branching, thickness, cross-sectional shape, and preferred directions. In order to compare the micro-structure of leather samples from various body parts or even species, the segmentation has to be applicable without extensive pre-processing and parameter tuning. Robustness can be gained by applying smoothing methods that are adapted to the goal of defining image regions by similar local orientation. The challenge is that the space of fiber orientations in 3D is not equipped with an order. Motivated by a recent approach for nevertheless defining erosion and dilation on the sphere, we suggest new definitions for these morphological base transformations on the space of directions in 3D. We present segmentation results for 3D images of leather samples derived by these new morphological smoothing methods.     Work-Related Injuries among Insured Construction Workers Presenting to a Swiss Adult Emergency Department: A Retrospective Study (2016-2020).

    Occupational injuries are one of the main causes of Emergency Department visits and represent a substantial source of disability or even death. However, the published studies and reports on construction-occupational accidents in Switzerland are limited. We aimed to investigate the epidemiology of fatal and non-fatal injuries among construction workers older than 16 years of age over a 5-year period. Data were gathered from the emergency department (ED) of Bern University Hospital. A retrospective design was chosen to allow analysis of changes in construction accidents between 2016-2020. A total of 397 patients were enrolled. Compared to studies in other countries, we also showed that the upper extremity and falling from height is the most common injured body part and mechanism of injury. Furthermore, we were able to show that the most common age group representing was 26-35 years and the second common body part injured was the head, which is a difference from studies in other countries. Wound lacerations were the most common type of injury, followed by joint distortions. By stratifying according to the season, occupational injuries among construction workers were found to be significant higher during summer and autumn. As work-related injuries among construction workers are becoming more common, prevention strategies and safety instructions must be optimized

    Traditionally drama in schools has been seen either as a learning medium with a wide range of curricular uses or as a subject in its own right. This paper argues that the importance of drama in schools is in the processes of social and artistic engagement and experiencing of drama rather than in its outcomes. The paper contrasts the pro-social emphasis in the ensemble model of drama with the pro-technical and limited range of learning in subject-based approaches which foreground technical knowledge of periods, plays, styles and genres. The ensemble-based approach is positioned in the context of professional theatre understandings of ensemble artistry and in the context of revolutionary shifts from the pro-technical to the pro-social in educational and cultural policy making in England.
