[EN] This study examines the population structure, biology, diet composition and feeding ecology of Notacanthus bonaparte and Polyacanthonotus rissoanus in the Balearic Basin (north-west Mediterranean) from depth of 579 to 2174 m and at seasonal scale. Centre of Gravity (CoG) situate N. bonaparte population at the middle slope (942m) and at the lower slope (1680m) for P. rissoanus. Bigger size individuals at deeper depth coinciding with high values of gonadosomatic index (GSI) suggested that the reproductive event in both species is related with adults migration to deeper waters. Reproductive season for N. bonaparte occurs to the late summer and autum. For P. rissoanus reproducction occurs during summer. N. bonaparte diet based mainly in sessile benthic organisms as actinians, Isidella elongata corals and echinoderms. Some differences in the diet composition in relation to depth ranges was observed. Few differences in items consumed by seasonalty in relation to stratification and homogenization periods vas observed. Died diversity (H’) and fullness (F) of this species was correlated with environmental variables, showing an important relation with chlorophyll values and river dischargues two and three months before sample collection. It shows the influence of coastal and surface fall of organic matter in N. bonaparte diet source. Diet of P. rissoanus was based on epibenthyc and suprebenthyc crustaceans an polychaetes, revealing this species as an euryphagic predator. Diet was mainly compossed of polichaetes of the Harmothoe
genus and crustaceans of the Apseudes genus. Not appreciable differences in diet composittion in
relation to depth was observed. Not appreciable seasoal changes in the diet related with homogenization or stratification periods was observed, given the more deeper and more stable
environment where this species inhabits. Lactate dehydrogenase activity values obtained by experimental procedures showed high values as expected for this species compared to other deep sea fish speciesPeer Reviewe

Tornadic storms in the Iberian Mediterranean area and Balearic Islands: study of upper air conditions
Ponencia presentada en: XXXV Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el XIX Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en León, del 5 al 7 de marzo de 2018.The Mediterranean Area and Balearic Islands, which represent 20% of Spain's surface, there are more than 50% of registered tornadic events in the country. As they are frequent in coastal areas, where there are located high densely-populated cities, their economic and social impact are relevant. Several sounding-derived parameters from 182 soundings associated to tornadic and waterspout environments have been analysed to descript which are their typical values in tornadic storm days. The present study can help operational weather forecasting and surveillance tasks, thus increasing situational awareness in severe convective weather events. This study was performed within the framework of the HyMeX (HYdrological cycle in the Mediterranean EXperiment) programme, with partial funding from projects CGL2015-65627-C3-2-R (MINECO/FEDER) and CGL2016-81828-REDT (MINECO), and also from the Water Research Institute (IdRA) of the University of Barcelona
Three dimensionality in the wake of the flow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 5000
The turbulent flow around a circular cylinder has been investigated at Re=5000Re=5000 using direct numerical simulations. Low frequency behavior, vortex undulation, vortex splitting, vortex dislocations and three dimensional flow within the wake were found to happen at this flow regime. In order to successfully capture the wake three dimensionality, different span-wise lengths were considered. It was found that a length LZ=2pDLZ=2pD was enough to capture this behavior, correctly predicting different aspects of the flow such as drag coefficient, Strouhal number and pressure and velocity distributions when compared to experimental values. Two instability mechanisms were found to coexist in the present case study: a global type instability originating in the shear layer, which shows a characteristic frequency, and a convective type instability that seems to be constantly present in the near wake. Characteristics of both types of instabilities are identified and discussed in detail. As suggested by Norberg, a resonance-type effect takes place in the vortex formation region, as the coexistence of both instability mechanisms result in distorted vortex tubes. However, vortex coherence is never lost within the wake.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Numerical simulation of roughness effects on the flow past a circular cylinder
In the present work large eddy simulations of the flow past a rough cylinder are performed at a Reynolds number of Re = 4.2 × 105 and an equivalent sand-grain surface roughness height ks = 0.02D. In order to determine the effects of the surface roughness on the boundary layer transition and as a consequence on the wake topology, results
are compared to those of the smooth cylinder. It is shown that surface roughness triggers the transition to turbulence in the boundary layer, thus leading to an early separation caused by the increased drag and momentum deficit. Thus, the drag coefficient increases up to CD 1.122 (if compared to the smooth cylinder it should be about CD 0.3 - 0.5).
The wake topology also changes and resembles more the subcritical wake observed for the smooth cylinder at lower Reynolds numbers than the expected critical wake at this Reynolds number.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
