AbstractThe proposed discussion consists of two sections. Near-critical free-surface flows: Real fluid flow analysis
An open channel flow with a flow depth close to the critical depth is characterised by a curvilinear streamline flow field that results in steady free surface undulations. Near critical flows of practical relevance encompass the undular hydraulic jump when the flow changes from supercritical (F > 1) to subcritical (F 1). So far these flows were mainly studied based on ideal fluid flow computations, for which the flow is assumed irrotational and, thus, shear forces are absent. While the approach is accurate for critical flow conditions (F = 1) in weir and flumes, near-critical flows involve long distances reaches, and the effect of friction on the flow properties cannot be neglected. In the present study the characteristics of near-critical free-surface flows are reanalysed based on a model accounting for both the streamline curvature and friction effects. Based on the improved model, some better agreement with experimental results is found, thereby highlighting the main frictional features of the flow profiles
Synthesis and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic materials based on sulphonated polyamideimide and silica
The preparation of hybrid organic–inorganic
membrane materials based on a sulphonated polyamideimide
resin and silica filler has been studied. The method
allows the sol–gel process to proceed in the presence of a
high molecular weight polyamideimide, resulting in well
dispersed silica nanoparticles (<50 nm) within the polymer
matrix with chemical bonding between the organic and
inorganic phases. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as
the silica precursor and the organosilicate networks were
bonded to the polymer matrix via a coupling agent
aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTrEOS). The structure and
properties of these hybrid materials were characterized via a
range of techniques including FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM and
contact angle analysis. It was found that the compatibility
between organic and inorganic phases has been greatly
enhanced by the incorporation of APTrEOS. The thermal
stability and hydrophilic properties of hybrid materials have
also been significantly improved

Unconscious or underpowered? Probabilistic cuing of visual attention
Recent debate about the reliability of psychological research has raised concerns
about the prevalence of false positives in our discipline. However, false negatives can be
just as concerning in areas of research that depend on finding support for the absence of an
effect. This risk is particularly high in unconscious learning experiments, where
researchers commonly seek to demonstrate that people can learn to perform a task in the
absence of any explicit knowledge of the information that drives performance. The fact
that some unconscious learning effects are typically studied with small samples and
unreliable awareness measures makes false negatives especially likely. In the present
article we focus on a popular unconscious learning paradigm, probabilistic cuing of visual
attention, as a case study. Firstly, we show that, at the meta-analytic level, previous
experiments reveal positive signs of participant awareness, although individual studies are
severely underpowered to detect this. Secondly, we report the results of two empirical
studies in which participants’ awareness was tested with alternative and more sensitive
dependent measures, both of which manifest positive evidence of awareness. We also show
that, based on the predictions of a formal model of probabilistic cuing and given the
reliabilities of the dependent measures collected in these experiments, any statistical test
aimed at detecting a significant correlation between learning and awareness is doomed to
return a non-significant result, even if at the latent level both constructs are actually related
and participants’ knowledge is completely explicit
