    Mercury DPM: fast, flexible particle simulations in complex geometries part II: applications

    Get PDF
    MercuryDPM is a particle-simulation software developed open-source by a global network of researchers. It was designed ab initio to simulate realistic geometries and materials, thus it contains several unique features not found in any other particle simulation software. These features have been discussed in a companion paper published in the DEM7 conference proceedings; here we present several challenging setups implemented in MercuryDPM . Via these setups, we demonstrate the unique capability of the code to simulate and analyse highly complex geotechnical and industrial applications.These tups implemented include complex geometries such as (i) a screw conveyor, (ii) steady-state inflow conditions for chute flows, (iii) a confined conveyor belt to simulate a steady-state breaking wave, and(iii)aquasi-2D cylindrical slice to efficiently study shear flows.MercuryDPM is also parallel, which we showcase via a multi-million particle simulations of a rotating drum. We further demonstrate how to simulate complex particle interactions, including: (i)deformable, charged clay particles; and (ii) liquid bridges and liquid migration in wet particulates, (iii) non-spherical particles implemented via superquadrics. Finally, we show how to analyse and complex systems using the unique micro-macro mapping (coarse-graining) tool MercuryCG

    Preliminary Assessment of Radiolysis for the Cooling Water System in the Rotating Target of {SORGENTINA}-{RF}

    The SORGENTINA-RF project aims at developing a 14 MeV fusion neutron source featuring an emission rate in the order of 5-7 x 10(13) s(-1). The plant relies on a metallic water-cooled rotating target and a deuterium (50%) and tritium (50%) ion beam. Beyond the main focus of medical radioisotope production, the source may represent a multi-purpose neutron facility by implementing a series of neutron-based techniques. Among the different engineering and technological issues to be addressed, the production of incondensable gases and corrosion product into the rotating target deserves a dedicated investigation. In this study, a preliminary analysis is carried out, considering the general layout of the target and the present choice of the target material

    The Italian multiple sclerosis register

    Get PDF
    The past decade has seen extraordinary increase in worldwide availability of and access to several large multiple sclerosis (MS) databases and registries. MS registries represent powerful tools to provide meaningful information on the burden, natural history, and long-term safety and effectiveness of treatments. Moreover, patients, physicians, industry, and policy makers have an active interest in real-world observational studies based on register data, as they have the potential to answer the questions that are most relevant to daily treatment decision-making. In 2014, the Italian MS Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian MS clinical centers, promoted and funded the creation of the Italian MS Register, a project in continuity with the existing Italian MS Database Network set up from 2001. Main objective of the Italian MS Register is to create an organized multicenter structure to collect data of all MS patients for better defining the disease epidemiology, improving quality of care, and promoting research projects in high-priority areas. The aim of this article is to present the current framework and network of the Italian MS register, including the methodology used to improve the quality of data collection and to facilitate the exchange of data and the collaboration among national and international groups

    Linear stability analysis of pipe Poiseuille flow for an Oldroyd-B fluid

    No full text
    The effects of viscoelasticity on the linear evolution of disturbances on pipe Poiseuille flow are numerically investigated. The viscoelastic fluid is described by the Oldroyd-B model and the work primarily focuses on high Reynolds numbers flows of diluted solutions. The equations governing both flow and elastic variables are written in polar coordinates and are discretized by an accurate Chebyshev pseudospectral code. Both linear modal and non modal stability properties of infinitesimal disturbances are considered. The eigenvalue spectrum of the governing operator and linear transient growth of three dimensional perturbations are determined and the results are compared to analogous classical results for pipe Poiseuille flow. Non modal analysis reveals that elasticity is generally active in reducing the transient growth at high values of streamwise wave number
