Computing cournot equilibrium through maximization over prices

    Get PDF
This paper presents an alternative characterization of internal Cournot equilibrium based on the first-order conditions corresponding to profit maximization over prices. This characterization is particularly useful when the market is described in terms of demand functions (rather than inverse-demand functions). A significant computational advantage is gained in homogeneous good cases as demand functions need not be inverted and simple first order conditions are obtained. In addition, this approach mimics price setting behavior and thus suggests a price competition interpretation of the Cournot game

What does Hirsch index evolution explain us? A case study: Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The evolution of Turkish Journal of Chemistry (Turk J. Chem) Hirsch index (h-index) over the period 1995-2005 is studied and determined in the case of the self and without self-citations. It is seen that the effect of Hirsch index of Turk J. Chem has a highly positive trend during the last five years. It proves that Turk J. Chem is improving itself both in quantity and quality since h-index reflects peer review, and peer review reflects research quality of a journal.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Capacity Choice, Foreign Trade and Exchange Rates

We investigate the effects of exchange rate movements on investment decisions of firms in an oligopolistic market. In a two-country-world model, we focus on the capacity investment decisions of small (small initial capacity and high marginal cost) and large (large initial capacity and low marginal cost) domestic firms. Both type of firms use foreign inputs in production and sell their output in the foreign market, thus they are prone to changes in exchange rate from both cost and demand side. Results show that devaluations alter the composition of production and the relative share of small and inefficient firms at the expense of large and efficient firms in the economy. The investment response to exchange rates is more pronounced in more competitive markets.Capacity investment, exchange rates, market structure.

The tracking of paper usage data versus citation counts for Library Philosophy and Practice

With academic journals widely published and distributed online, the paper usage data has been a focus not only by publishers, but also by many researchers, especially librarians. The main reason for this motivation is that this data is considered as a measure of interest in published research and that possible references to the paper in the future have been used as the first predictive tool. The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a relationship between paper usage data and citation counts for Library Philosophy and Practice between 2005 and 2020, taking into account the number of citations that papers cited ten and over in the Scopus database have received in the Google Scholar (GS) database at the same time. As a result of the analysis, the correlations between download and citation counts from the Scopus database and the GS database were determined to be statistically significant positive (rS=0.261 and rP=0.310; rS=0.636 and rP=0.356; p\u3c0.01), respectively. Similarly, there was a positive correlation between citations in the Scopus database and citations in the GS database (rS=0.581 and rP=0.812; p\u3c0.01). In the meanwhile, taking into consideration the papers\u27 single-author and multi-author statuses; it was observed that single-author papers received more citations on average in the Scopus and GS databases, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant (p\u3e0.05). The findings were compared with the studies in the literature and evaluations were made about what can be done for future studies

Sterile acellular dermal collagen as a treatment for rippling deformity of breast.

Prosthetic implants are frequently used for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Unfortunately, long-term aesthetic results of prosthetic breast restoration may be hindered by complications such as rippling, capsular contracture, and implant malposition. The advent of use of acellular dermal matrices has greatly improved the outcomes of prosthetic breast reconstruction. We describe a case of rippling deformity of breast that was treated using an acellular dermal matrix product, AlloMax. The patient presented with visible rippling of bilateral prosthetic breast implants as well as significant asymmetry of the breasts after multiple excisional biopsies for right breast ductal carcinoma in situ. A 6 × 10 cm piece of AlloMax was placed on the medial aspect of each breast between the implant and the skin flap. Follow-up was performed at 1 week, 3 months, and 1 year following the procedure. The patient recovered well from the surgery and there were no complications. At her first postoperative follow-up the patient was extremely satisfied with the result. At her 3-month and 1-year follow-up she had no recurrence of her previous deformity and no new deformity

Accounting books of the imperial waqfs (charitable endowments) in the eastern Mediterranean (15th to 19th centuries)

The history of accounting in the Eastern Mediterranean has not been adequately studied through its primary sources, despite the fact that the Turkish archives house an enormous amount of material for exploring accounting practices in the Ottoman Empire. Ottomanists used the account books as sources for Ottoman socioeconomic and institutional history. They analyzed, fully transliterated and published the account registers of the central treasury, the Istanbul shipyard and the waqf institutions. Nevertheless, accounting historians did not even show interest into published archival sources up until recent years. Owing to a few recent works that were based on the primary sources, nowadays accounting historians are more and more aware of the richness and significance ofOttomanarchives for accounting history and for comparative accounting research as well. This study introduces the account books kept in the Ottoman waqf institutions between the 15th and 19th centuries in order to raise awareness of the Eastern Mediterranean accounting tradition and to spark further in-depth and comparative works focused on the history, functioning, role and change of accounting in the Eastern Mediterranean
