The central parsecs of M87: jet emission and an elusive accretion disc
We present the first simultaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) of M87
core at a scale of 0.4 arcsec () across the electromagnetic
spectrum. Two separate, quiescent, and active states are sampled that are
characterized by a similar featureless SED of power-law form, and that are thus
remarkably different from that of a canonical active galactic nuclei (AGN) or a
radiatively inefficient accretion source. We show that the emission from a jet
gives an excellent representation of the core of M87 core covering ten orders
of magnitude in frequency for both the active and the quiescent phases. The
inferred total jet power is, however, one to two orders of magnitude lower than
the jet mechanical power reported in the literature. The maximum luminosity of
a thin accretion disc allowed by the data yields an accretion rate of , assuming 10% efficiency. This power
suffices to explain M87 radiative luminosity at the jet-frame, it is however
two to three order of magnitude below that required to account for the jet's
kinetic power. The simplest explanation is variability, which requires the core
power of M87 to have been two to three orders of magnitude higher in the last
200 yr. Alternatively, an extra source of power may derive from black hole
spin. Based on the strict upper limit on the accretion rate, such spin power
extraction requires an efficiency an order of magnitude higher than predicted
from magnetohydrodynamic simulations, currently in the few hundred per cent

Accelerated aging effects on color and translucency of flowable composites
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of accelerated aging on color and translucency parameter of composites.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Filtek Supreme Ultra Flowable, shades A1, A3, White, Tetric EvoFlow, shades A1, A3, Bleach, and Filtek Z250 shades A1, A3, B1 were evaluated. Color and translucency were recorded using a spectrophotometer after 24-hour storage (baseline) and after accelerated aging. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance.
RESULTS: Fisher\u27s PLSD intervals for comparisons among products and shades were 0.4, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.4 for ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, and ΔE*, respectively. The data showed significant ΔE* and ΔL* main effects for composite product and shades (p \u3c 0.001) and their interactions (p = 0.008 and p = 0.03), respectively. Tetric EvoFlow displayed the smallest aging-dependent color shift followed by Filtek Z250 and Filtek Supreme Ultra Flowable. Accelerated aging did not significantly affected the composites for translucency (p \u3e 0.05).
CONCLUSION: The effects of aging on color of resin composites were composite and shade dependent. Translucency was not affected by accelerated aging.

Unbiased large spectroscopic surveys of galaxies selected by SPICA using dust bands
The mid-infrared (IR) range contains many spectral features associated with
large molecules and dust grains such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
and silicates. These are usually very strong compared to fine-structure gas
lines, and thus valuable in studying the spectral properties of faint distant
galaxies. In this paper, we evaluate the capability of low-resolution mid-IR
spectroscopic surveys of galaxies that could be performed by SPICA. The surveys
are designed to address the question how star formation and black hole
accretion activities evolved over cosmic time through spectral diagnostics of
the physical conditions of the interstellar/circumnuclear media in galaxies. On
the basis of results obtained with Herschel far-IR photometric surveys of
distant galaxies and Spitzer and AKARI near- to mid-IR spectroscopic
observations of nearby galaxies, we estimate the numbers of the galaxies at
redshift z > 0.5, which are expected to be detected in the PAH features or dust
continuum by a wide (10 deg^2) or deep (1 deg^2) blind survey, both for a given
observation time of 600 hours. As by-products of the wide blind survey, we also
expect to detect debris disks, through the mid-IR excess above the photospheric
emission of nearby main-sequence stars, and we estimate their number. We
demonstrate that the SPICA mid-IR surveys will efficiently provide us with
unprecedentedly large spectral samples, which can be studied further in the

The 1989 and 2015 outbursts of V404 Cygni: a global study of wind-related optical features
The black hole transient V404 Cygni exhibited a bright outburst in June 2015
that was intensively followed over a wide range of wavelengths. Our team
obtained high time resolution optical spectroscopy (~90 s), which included a
detailed coverage of the most active phase of the event. We present a database
consisting of 651 optical spectra obtained during this event, that we combine
with 58 spectra gathered during the fainter December 2015 sequel outburst, as
well as with 57 spectra from the 1989 event. We previously reported the
discovery of wind-related features (P-Cygni and broad-wing line profiles)
during both 2015 outbursts. Here, we build diagnostic diagrams that enable us
to study the evolution of typical emission line parameters, such as line fluxes
and equivalent widths, and develop a technique to systematically detect outflow
signatures. We find that these are present throughout the outburst, even at
very low optical fluxes, and that both types of outflow features are observed
simultaneously in some spectra, confirming the idea of a common origin. We also
show that the nebular phases depict loop patterns in many diagnostic diagrams,
while P-Cygni profiles are highly variable on time-scales of minutes. The
comparison between the three outbursts reveals that the spectra obtained during
June and December 2015 share many similarities, while those from 1989 exhibit
narrower emission lines and lower wind terminal velocities. The diagnostic
diagrams presented in this work have been produced using standard measurement

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated activity of particulate organic matter from the Paso del Norte airshed along the U.S.-Mexico border.
In this study, we determined the biologic activity of dichloromethane-extracted particulate matter < 10 micro m in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) obtained from filters at three sites in the Paso del Norte airshed, which includes El Paso, Texas, USA; Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and Sunland Park, New Mexico, USA. The extracts were rich in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and had significant biologic activity, measured using two in vitro assay systems: ethoxyresorufin-(O-deethylase (EROD) induction and the aryl hydrocarbon-receptor luciferase reporter system. In most cases, both EROD (5.25 pmol/min/mg protein) and luciferase activities (994 relative light units/mg) were highest in extracts from the Advance site located in an industrial neighborhood in Juarez. These values represented 58% and 55%, respectively, of induction associated with 1 micro M ss-naphthoflavone exposures. In contrast, little activity was observed at the Northeast Clinic site in El Paso, the reference site. In most cases, luciferase and EROD activity from extracts collected from the Tillman Health Center site, situated in downtown El Paso, fell between those observed at the other two sites. Overall, a statistically significant correlation existed between PM10 and EROD and luciferase activities. Chemical analysis of extracts collected from the Advance site demonstrated that concentrations of most PAHs were higher than those reported in most other metropolitan areas in the United States. Calculations made with these data suggest a cancer risk of 5-12 cases per 100,000 people. This risk estimate, as well as comparisons with the work of other investigators, raises concern regarding the potential for adverse health effects to the residents of this airshed.
