    Identification of a novel protein containing two C2 domains selectively expressed in the rat brain and kidney

    AbstractWe have isolated and characterized a rat brain cDNA clone which encodes a new protein of 474 amino acids in length which contains two C2 domains structurally homologous to those present in synaptotagmins. The overall amino acid identity in C2 domains between this protein and the synaptotagmins is 36–44%. This protein also contains 3 putative consensus sequences for phosphorylation by cAMP-dependent protein kinase. RNA blot hybridization revealed a 3.0 kb transcript abundantly expressed only in the rat brain and the kidney. Thus, we called this brain/kidney protein (B/K). In situ hybridization and Northern blot analyses showed that the B/K transcript was found in forebrain including the olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and hypothalamus. In the kidney, high levels of B/K transcript were expressed in the papillary region of the inner medulla, the inner stripe of the outer medulla and the cortex. The selective expression in forebrain and kidney suggests that B/K may be involved in similar cAMP-dependent processes at these very different sites

Наголошено на спірних моментах в історії становлення цієї лексичної групи. Зроблено висновок про те, що нині гірнича термінологія української мови практично повністю унормована завдяки ретельній праці лексикографів та фахівців-гірників.The paper examines the ways mining terminology and nomenclature was developed. Special attention is drawn to the period of the 20th – 30th of the 20th century, when the term system was formed. The research focuses on disputable moments in the history of lexical group development; it concludes that mining terminology is normalized in the present-day Ukrainian language thanks to the careful work of lexicographers and mining specialist

    The convergent effect of international collaboration between young leaders of two global societies : strengthening microbiology education and training practices worldwide

    There has never been a more critical time than the present for young microbiologists to engage in continuous postgraduate education. Next-generation microbiologists need to integrate several scientific disciplines in the early stages of their careers to keep up with the ever-changing nature of microbiology (advent of high-throughput sequencing platforms, bioinformatics, complex omic, culture and systems-biology approaches) and to ensure timely response to the current global health and biodiversity threats. Here we propose that international collaboration of young experts would help to address the challenges in microbiology training and serve as a communication bridge between senior and early career scientists. To establish a one-of-a-kind collaboration, the Trainee Association (TAE) of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and the Young Leaders Circle (YLC) of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) have joined forces to adequately represent the interests of young members within the two largest societies in the field of microbiology. Through this partnership, both societies aim to promote continuous education for young scientists and the general public. Additionally, we intend to identify shared objectives and introduce joint activities that could lead to a beneficial exchange process for a long-lasting relationship.     A Theory of the Longitudinal and Hall Conductivities of the Cuprate Superconductors

    We establish the applicability to transport phenomena in the cuprate superconductors of a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid (NAFL) description of the magnetic interaction between planar quasiparticles by using it to obtain the temperature dependent resistivity and Hall conductivity seen experimentally in the normal state. Following a perturbative calculation of the anisotropic (as one goes around the Fermi surface) quasiparticle lifetimes which are the hallmark of a NAFL, we obtain simple approximate expressions for the longitudinal, σxx\sigma_{xx}, and Hall, σxy\sigma_{xy}, conductivities which reflect the magnetic crossovers seen experimentally as one varies the doping level and temperature. We present a simple phenomenological model for the variation in mean free path around the Fermi surface, and use this to extract from experiments on σxx\sigma_{xx} and σxy\sigma_{xy} quasiparticle lifetimes in the hot (strongly coupled quasiparticle) and cold (weakly coupled quasiparticle) regions of the Fermi surface which are consistent with the perturbation theory estimates. We improve upon the latter by carrying out direct numerical (non-variational) solutions of the Boltzmann equation for representative members of the YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} and La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 systems, with results for transport properties in quantitative agreement with experiment. Using the same numerical approach we study the influence of CuO chains on the a-b plane anisotropy and find results in agreement with experimental findings in YBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8.Comment: 49 pages + 24 PostScript figure

    Cell-selective labeling using amino acid precursors for proteomic studies of multicellular environments.

    We report a technique to selectively and continuously label the proteomes of individual cell types in coculture, named cell type-specific labeling using amino acid precursors (CTAP). Through transgenic expression of exogenous amino acid biosynthesis enzymes, vertebrate cells overcome their dependence on supplemented essential amino acids and can be selectively labeled through metabolic incorporation of amino acids produced from heavy isotope-labeled precursors. When testing CTAP in several human and mouse cell lines, we could differentially label the proteomes of distinct cell populations in coculture and determine the relative expression of proteins by quantitative mass spectrometry. In addition, using CTAP we identified the cell of origin of extracellular proteins secreted from cells in coculture. We believe that this method, which allows linking of proteins to their cell source, will be useful in studies of cell-cell communication and potentially for discovery of biomarkers

    Suppression of HBV by Tenofovir in HBV/HIV coinfected patients : a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Hepatitis B coinfection is common in HIV-positive individuals and as antiretroviral therapy has made death due to AIDS less common, hepatitis has become increasingly important. Several drugs are available to treat hepatitis B. The most potent and the one with the lowest risk of resistance appears to be tenofovir (TDF). However there are several questions that remain unanswered regarding the use of TDF, including the proportion of patients that achieves suppression of HBV viral load and over what time, whether suppression is durable and whether prior treatment with other HBV-active drugs such as lamivudine, compromises the efficacy of TDF due to possible selection of resistant HBV strains. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines and using multilevel mixed effects logistic regression, stratified by prior and/or concomitant use of lamivudine and/or emtricitabine. Results: Data was available from 23 studies including 550 HBV/HIV coinfected patients treated with TDF. Follow up was for up to seven years but to ensure sufficient power the data analyses were limited to three years. The overall proportion achieving suppression of HBV replication was 57.4%, 79.0% and 85.6% at one, two and three years, respectively. No effect of prior or concomitant 3TC/FTC was shown. Virological rebound on TDF treatment was rare. Interpretation: TDF suppresses HBV to undetectable levels in the majority of HBV/HIV coinfected patients with the proportion fully suppressed continuing to increase during continuous treatment. Prior treatment with 3TC/FTC does not compromise efficacy of TDF treatment. The use of combination treatment with 3TC/FTC offers no significant benefit over TDF alone

    In-beam γ-ray Spectroscopy Studies of Medium-spin States in the Odd-odd Nucleus \u3csup\u3e186\u3c/sup\u3eRe

    Excited states in 186Re with spins up to J=12ℏ were investigated in two separate experiments using 186W(d,2n) reactions at beam energies of 12.5 and 14.5 MeV. Two- and threefold γ-ray coincidence data were collected using the CAESAR and CAGRA spectrometers, respectively, each composed of Compton-suppressed high-purity germanium detectors. Analysis of the data revealed rotational bands built on several two-quasiparticle intrinsic states, including a long-lived Kπ=(8+) isomer. Configuration assignments were supported by an analysis of in-band properties, such as |gK−gR| values. The excitation energies of the observed intrinsic states were compared with results from multi-quasiparticle blocking calculations, based on the Lipkin-Nogami pairing approach, that included contributions from the residual proton-neutron interactions.     Clinical Relevance and Discriminatory Value of Elevated Liver Aminotransferase Levels for Dengue Severity

    Dengue is a global public health problem, as the incidence of the disease has reached hyperendemic proportions in recent decades. Infection with dengue can cause acute, febrile illness or severe disease, which can lead to plasma leakage, bleeding, and organ impairment. One of the most prominent clinical characteristics of dengue patients is increased aspartate and alanine aminotransferase liver enzyme levels. The significance of this is uncertain, as it is transient in the majority of cases, and most patients recover uneventfully without liver damage. In this study, we characterized this phenomenon in the context of dengue severity and found that, although liver enzyme levels increased concurrently with dengue severity, they could not sufficiently discriminate between dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever or between non-severe and severe dengue. Therefore clinicians may need to use other parameters to distinguish dengue severity in patients during early illness
