Processing Anti-Asian Violence: A Roundtable Discussion on the Atlanta Shootings
A Roundtable Discussion on the Atlanta Shootings
The alarming rise of anti-Asian violence, especially the shooting deaths of six women of Asian descent on March 16 in Atlanta, is prompting conversations about the intersections of racism and misogyny, dispelling stereotypes aboutsex work, and inspiring activism and allyship in support of the AAPIcommunity.
In this conversation, Notre Dame professors and PhD students will examine the intersectional nature of anti-Asian violence as well, discuss the roots of systemic racism, and explore the needs of AAPI communities now and in the future.

Iron fortification and iron supplementation are cost-effective interventions to reduce iron deficiency in four subregions of the world
Iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in
the world, affecting millions of people in both nonindustrialized and
industrialized countries. We estimated the costs, effects, and
cost-effectiveness of iron supplementation and iron fortification
interventions in 4 regions of the world. The effects on population health
were arrived at by using a population model designed to estimate the
lifelong impact of iron supplementation or iron fortification on
individuals benefiting from such interventions. The population model took
into consideration effectiveness, patient adherence, and geographic
coverage. Costs were based on primary data collection and on a review of
the literature. At 95% geographic coverage, iron supplementation has a
larger impact on population health than iron fortification. Iron
supplementation would avert <12,500 disability adjusted life years (DALY)
annually in the European subregion, with very low rates of adult and child
mortality, to almost 2.5 million DALYs in the African and Southeast Asian
subregions, with high rates of adult and child mortality. On the other
hand, fortification is less costly than supplementation and appears to be
more cost effective than iron supplementation, regardless of the
geographic coverage of fortification. We conclude that iron fortification
is economically more attractive than iron supplementation. However,
spending the extra resources to implement iron supplementation is still a
cost-effective option. The results should be interpreted with caution,
because evidence of intervention effectiveness predominantly relates to
small-scale efficacy trials, which may not reflect the actual effect under
expected conditions
Anti-corruption Strategies in Afghanistan: An Alternative Approach
© 2016, © 2016 SAGE Publications. Afghanistan is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. This article provides a critical examination of Afghan anticorruption strategies based on formal anticorruption strategy, bureaucratic reform, and counter-narcotics. This article includes reference to some of the opinions of 70 semi-structured interviews conducted by the author in Kabul during May–June 2010 with anticorruption experts, rights-based organizations, civil society groups, ministries, and international and national organizations. The findings are that political interference from Afghan elites preserves corruption and deep roots of patron–client corruption—patronage networks and illicit drug trafficking interests with criminal groups for profitable gain—are difficult to combat with the existing anticorruption strategy. Hence, new approaches need to be attempted, such as, incorporating religion and ethics and empowering local leaders to combat corruption within a sixfold approach which involves (i) raising awareness, (ii) prevention, (iii) prosecution and sanctions, (iv) detection, (v) a collaborative counter-narcotics strategy, and (vi) linking religion
Higher education in Indonesia: Contemporary challenges in governance, access, and quality
This chapter presents the development of Indonesian higher education since its origins to current
challenges in the fields of governance, autonomy, access, equity, quality, and
internationalization. Indonesia has a massive and diversified tertiary education, including
experiments in community colleges and online programs. The higher educational system remains
mainly centralized, with the exception of some reforms towards financial autonomy. Insufficient
public funding hinders the capacity to provide adequate teaching, research, and facilities among
other aspects. The consequential rise in student fees contributes to an overrepresentation of
students from Java, urban centers, and higher social classes

Regulating disasters? The role of international law in disaster prevention and management
Purpose – This article explores the role of international law in disaster prevention and management, with a particular focus on the emerging field of international disaster law, and its relationship with international human rights law. It further introduces the four articles of the special column of this journal issue, dedicated to disasters and international law.
Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is based upon primary sources of legislation and policy, as well as academic literature on disasters and international law.
Findings – Although the field of international disaster law is at its infancy, we argue that this emergent area does have the potential to gain widespread recognition as a distinct field of law, and that this could be of benefit for the wider disaster management community.
Originality/value – The article introduces key legal features and themes relating to international law and disasters, highlighting their relevance for disaster management. The added value is to widen the discussion on aspects of disasters regulated by international law, thus facilitating the future exchange with other academic subjects and operational fields.
Keywords – disasters; international law; disaster management; treaties; human rights; international disaster law; international human rights law.
