Fatigue and stress responses in athletes performing functional-fitness workout and its association with well-being
We monitored fatigue and stress using heart rate variability and session rating perceived exertion in trained athletes performing a single bout of functional-fitness training workout. Also, we verified the association between heart rate variability and session rating perceived exertion with well-being. In the first week of tapering, eleven national athletes (age: 25.7 ± 3.3y; body mass index: 27.7 ± 2.8 kg·m-2; training history: > 4y) participated in this study. Heart rate variability was analyzed basal, before and after the experimental protocol. Session rating perceived exertion was analyzed after the experimental protocol, and after the assessments, the association between them and well-being was performed. Repeated measures of ANOVA were performed to compare condition x time, and Pearson correlation was used to analyze the associations. Heart rate variability decreased its values after the training workout (ηp2=11.5, p<0.001), and session rating perceived exertion was high (25.8 ± 6.9 a.u.). We did not find associations between heart rate variability or session rating perceived exertion and well-being (r between -0.34 and 0.35, p>0.05). This study did not support the idea of a significant relationship between objective/subjective, physiological assessments and well-being in one bout of training workout. Functional-fitness coaches and athletes should know the limited evidence about objective/subjective assessments and well-being
Emergency contraceptives: why not use them?
This is a review article concerning emergency contraceptives, with a description of their mechanism of action, efficacy and indications, ilustrated with na informal questionnaire applied to first-year medical studients at FMRP-USP. The questionnaire showed that the method is not well known and those students who knew them had doubt about their mechanisms of action and adverse effects
Evaluation of embolization for periuterine varices involving chronic pelvic pain secondary to pelvic congestion syndrome
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical response and success rate after periuterine varices embolization in patients with chronic pelvic pain secondary to pelvic congestion syndrome and to report the safety of endovascular treatment and its rate of complications. METHODS: Retrospective cohort of patients undergoing endovascular treatment of pelvic congestion syndrome in our department from January 2012 to November 2015. Data were analyzed based on patient background, imaging findings, embolized veins, rate of complications, and clinical response as indicated by the visual analog pain scale. RESULTS: We performed periuterine varices embolization in 22 patients during the study, four of which required a second embolization. Seventeen patients reported a reduction in pelvic pain after the first embolization and three patients reported a reduction in pelvic pain after the second embolization. Minor complications were observed in our patients, such as postural hypotension, postoperative pain, and venous perforation during the procedure, without clinical repercussion. CONCLUSION: Periuterine varices embolization in patients with chronic pelvic pain secondary to pelvic congestion syndrome appears to be an effective and safe technique
Umbilical endometriosis without previous pelvic surgery
Seu tratamento cirúrgico é, em geral, suficiente para a remissão total da lesão e dos sintomas.PURPOSE: to present a series of cases of umbilical endometriosis in patients in reproductive age, with no previous pelvic surgery. METHODS: four patients aged between 33 and 43 years were included in the study. They all presented umbilical bleeding associated or not with pelvic pain, and medical history varied from two months to four years. Abdominal wall ultrasound was performed for diagnosis support before surgical excision of the umbilical lesions, and histological examination was also performed. RESULTS: the ultrasonographic evaluation of the four patients showed hypoechogenic umbilical lesion suggestive of endometriosis. All patients were submitted to surgical excision and histological examination of the lesions. CA-125 serum levels were measured in three of the patients, but they were within normal ranges (from 6.8 to 10.1 U/mL). In addition to umbilical surgery, laparoscopy was performed in all patients, but only one presented concomitant pelvic endometriosis. In a one-year follow-up, patients maintained asymptomatic and there was no recurrence of the lesions. CONCLUSIONS: umbilical endometriosis is a rare entity, but it may be remembered as a possibility in cases of umbilical nodulations or bleeding, even if there is no previous history of pelvic surgery with endometrial manipulation. Its treatment is always surgical and, in general, it is enough to promote complete elimination of the lesion and of the symptoms
High prevalence of chronic pelvic pain in women in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil and direct association with abdominal surgery
INTRODUCTION: Chronic pelvic pain is a disease that directly affects the social and professional lives of women. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of this clinical condition and to identify independent factors associated with it in women living in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. METHODS: A one-year cross-sectional study was conducted in a population sample of 1,278 women over the age of 1,278 women over the age of 14 years. The target population was predominantly composed of women who are treated by the public health system. The questionnaire was administered by interviewers who were not linked to the city health care programs. The prevalence of the morbidity was estimated. First, we identified the significant variables associated with pelvic pain (p<0.10) and then we attributed values of 0 or 1 to the absence or presence of these variables. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify and estimate the simultaneous impact of the independent variables. The results were expressed by odds ratio and their 95% confidence interval with p<0.05. RESULTS: The disease was found in 11.5% (147/1,278) of the sample. The independent predictors were dyspareunia, previous abdominal surgery, depression, dysmenorrhea, anxiety, current sexual activity, low back pain, constipation, urinary symptoms, and low educational level. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of chronic pelvic pain in Ribeirão Preto is high and is associated with conditions that can usually be prevented, controlled, or resolved by improvement of public health policies and public education
