This research aims to describe the interpretation of the cultural tradition of omed-omedan by the community in Banjar Kaja. In order to understand the meaning of the tradition of omed-omedan, the symbolic interactionism theory approach was used. This research used qualitative research with the phenomenology approach. The data collecting technique used was through observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was a modification of phenomenology analysis technique from Kaam. The tradition of omed-omedan or med-medan derived from the word omed which means to pull, so omed-omedan means pulling each other. There are always pros and cons of a tradition in a community. There is an image or impression that seems to accuse the omed-omedan tradition as a chance to kissing in public. Actually, the technique of omed-omedan is where the man embraces the woman, and their cheeks are touching to each other which give the impression as if they are kissing. The interpretation by informants related to the tradition of omed-omedan is the meaning of solidarity as a social creature, human cannot live without others and should help each other, the meaning of religion is as an expression of gratitude for the life given by the creator, the meaning of harmony or hospitality is to maintain balance and the integrity of the Banjar Kaja community. What is the meaning of Omed-omedan tradition for the people at Banjar Kaja Kelurahan Sesetan, South Denpasar Sub-District, Denpasar City? The theoretical bases applied in this research are 1). Culture, 2). Religious systems, 3). Society. Ă‚ The results of the research show that the implementation of Omed-omedan Tradition must be conducted as it relates to Ida Bhatara Sesuhunan at in Banjar Kaja Sesetan temple, which is believed to be able to provide safety for His people, in addition, Omed-omedan tradition is also an event of Masima Krama (visit and forgive each other) to welcome Caka New Year (Nyepi Holiday). The conclusions of this research are 1). Omed-omedan tradition is Purwa Dresta, namely a religious custom and it is not allowed if it is not conducted because if it is not conducted, it is believed it would lead to the undesirable things, 2). In its performance, Omed-omedan tradition is an event of Masima Krama in order to welcome Caka New Year, 3). The meaning of this Omed-omedan tradition is as a devotion to Ida Bhatara Sesuhunan, as by always conducting this tradition, the members of Banjar Kaja Sesetan are believed to always have His protection.

Foreground detection enhancement using Pearson correlation filtering

Foreground detection algorithms are commonly employed as an initial module in video processing pipelines for automated surveillance. The resulting masks produced by these algorithms are usually postprocessed in order to improve their quality. In this work, a postprocessing filter based on the Pearson correlation among the pixels in a neighborhood of the pixel at hand is proposed. The flow of information among pixels is controlled by the correlation that exists among them. This way, the filtering performance is enhanced with respect to some state of the art proposals, as demonstrated with a selection of benchmark videos.Universidad de Málaga. Pain response of resistance training of the paravertebral musculature under radiotherapy in patients with spinal bone metastases – a randomized trial

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: To compare pain response outcomes for patients with spinal bone metastases treated with resistance training of the spinal musculature versus passive physical therapy during radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: In this randomized trial, 60 consecutive patients were treated from September 2011 until March 2013 within one of the two groups: resistance training (Arm A) or passive physical therapy (Arm B) with thirty patients in each group during RT. The course of pain according to visual analog scale (VAS), concurrent medication, and oral morphine equivalent dose (OMED) were assessed at baseline, three months, and six months after RT. Pain response was determined using International Bone Consensus response definitions. RESULTS: The course of VAS in the intervention group (Arm A) was significantly lower both during and after RT (AUC, p < .001). The use of analgetic medication showed the same result, with significantly fewer analgetics being necessary both during and after RT in arm A (p < .001). In the course of time, the OMED decreased in arm A, but increased in arm B. After 6 month, 72.2% of patients in arm A, and 22.2% in arm B were responders (p = .014). CONCLUSION: Our trial demonstrated that guided isometric resistance training of the paravertebral muscles can improve pain relief over a 6-months period in patients with stable spinal metastases. Importantly, the intervention was able to reduce OMED as well as concomitant pain medication. The trial is registered in Clinical trial identifier NCT 01409720 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/) since 2(nd) of August 2011

    Continuum-Mediated Dark Matter-Baryon Scattering

Many models of dark matter scattering with baryons may be treated either as a simple contact interaction or as the exchange of a light mediator particle. We study an alternative, in which a continuum of light mediator states may be exchanged. This could arise, for instance, from coupling to a sector which is approximately conformal at the relevant momentum transfer scale. In the non-relativistic effective theory of dark matter-baryon scattering, which is useful for parametrizing direct detection signals, the effect of such continuum mediators is to multiply the amplitude by a function of the momentum transfer q, which in the simplest case is just a power law. We develop the basic framework and study two examples: the case where the mediator is a scalar operator coupling to the Higgs portal (which turns out to be highly constrained) and the case of an antisymmetric tensor operator Oμν{\cal O}_{\mu \nu} that mixes with the hypercharge field strength and couples to dark matter tensor currents, which has an interesting viable parameter space. We describe the effect of such mediators on the cross sections and recoil energy spectra that could be observed in direct detection.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. v2: minor changes, references adde

Enhancement of Metaheuristic Algorithm for Scheduling Workflows in Multi-fog Environments

Whether in computer science, engineering, or economics, optimization lies at the heart of any challenge involving decision-making. Choosing between several options is part of the decision- making process. Our desire to make the "better" decision drives our decision. An objective function or performance index describes the assessment of the alternative's goodness. The theory and methods of optimization are concerned with picking the best option. There are two types of optimization methods: deterministic and stochastic. The first is a traditional approach, which works well for small and linear problems. However, they struggle to address most of the real-world problems, which have a highly dimensional, nonlinear, and complex nature. As an alternative, stochastic optimization algorithms are specifically designed to tackle these types of challenges and are more common nowadays. This study proposed two stochastic, robust swarm-based metaheuristic optimization methods. They are both hybrid algorithms, which are formulated by combining Particle Swarm Optimization and Salp Swarm Optimization algorithms. Further, these algorithms are then applied to an important and thought-provoking problem. The problem is scientific workflow scheduling in multiple fog environments. Many computer environments, such as fog computing, are plagued by security attacks that must be handled. DDoS attacks are effectively harmful to fog computing environments as they occupy the fog's resources and make them busy. Thus, the fog environments would generally have fewer resources available during these types of attacks, and then the scheduling of submitted Internet of Things (IoT) workflows would be affected. Nevertheless, the current systems disregard the impact of DDoS attacks occurring in their scheduling process, causing the amount of workflows that miss deadlines as well as increasing the amount of tasks that are offloaded to the cloud. Hence, this study proposed a hybrid optimization algorithm as a solution for dealing with the workflow scheduling issue in various fog computing locations. The proposed algorithm comprises Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In dealing with the effects of DDoS attacks on fog computing locations, two Markov-chain schemes of discrete time types were used, whereby one calculates the average network bandwidth existing in each fog while the other determines the number of virtual machines existing in every fog on average. DDoS attacks are addressed at various levels. The approach predicts the DDoS attack’s influences on fog environments. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method can significantly lessen the amount of offloaded tasks that are transferred to the cloud data centers. It could also decrease the amount of workflows with missed deadlines. Moreover, the significance of green fog computing is growing in fog computing environments, in which the consumption of energy plays an essential role in determining maintenance expenses and carbon dioxide emissions. The implementation of efficient scheduling methods has the potential to mitigate the usage of energy by allocating tasks to the most appropriate resources, considering the energy efficiency of each individual resource. In order to mitigate these challenges, the proposed algorithm integrates the Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, which is commonly employed to enhance the energy efficiency of processors. The experimental findings demonstrate that the utilization of the proposed method, combined with the Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique, yields improved outcomes. These benefits encompass a minimization in energy consumption. Consequently, this approach emerges as a more environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for fog computing environments
