Development of a Fluxgate Magnetometer Model

    Get PDF
As a part of the UNH SWFO-L1 mission to monitor space weather and the sun’s behavior, the fluxgate magnetometer is an important component to measure external magnetic fields. The basic principle of a fluxgate magnetometer is to detect changes in the ambient magnetic field by inducing a magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material via a drive winding. Each magnetometer is unique due to the ferromagnetic properties of the core material which can be seen in the hysteresis loop which is a relationship between the magnetic field strength (H) and the induced magnetic field (B). Measuring the hysteresis of a fluxgate magnetometer is important because the uniqueness of each magnetometer makes them difficult to model. In this project I am taking laboratory measurements from a fluxgate magnetometer to determine its hysteresis loop. Future projects will use this data and a similar setup of the SWFO-L1 magnetometer to compare to existing models and create a performance model

What Stops Designers from Designing Sustainable Packaging?—A Review of Eco-design Tools with Regard to Packaging Design

    Get PDF
Packaging has caused much waste and its sustainability has received much attention in the past decades. Designers have made efforts to mitigate environmental impacts of packaging. However, many packaging designs are still far from achieving their sustainability goals. The purpose of this study is to perform a literature review of the principal design methods and tools for sustainable packaging published over the last twenty years. The objective is to understand the main obstacles that limit their effective implementation in the packaging design process. This study develops a sustainable packaging design and development model and proposes criteria for accessing packaging tools and methods. This study has found that to achieve sustainable design, many tools have limitations in demonstrating usage and balancing trade-off situations. Most of the tools focus on defining problems rather than suggesting possible solutions

Life-Centered Concurrent Packaging Design : Integrating Packaging, Product, Logistics Process and Supply Chain

    No full text
Using a life-centered packaging design approach in thecontext of packaging applications for consumer goods, thispaper presents a conceptual model for the concurrent developmentof packaging, product, logistics process, and supplychain (SC). The objective is to enhance the understandingof packaging logistics and logistics management in SCs andto identify current packaging logistics issues in the SC. Thefour-dimensional concurrent engineering (4DCE) framework, based on the alignment of and interaction between SC,logistics, packaging, and product, is used to increase overallSC efficiency. The model is applied and tested via threecase studies within different industries. The results indicateimproved understanding and knowledge-sharing betweenSC actors, with collaborative efforts leading to an increasedoverall SC performance
