    Overcoming Isolation: Making the Case for the Development of Blended Service Learning and Social Work Interprofessional Field Education Experiences to Improve University-Community Engagement

    We argue in this paper that if social workers are to engage in more equal and just ways of working with people and communities then there is a need to reconceptualise the field education experience. While the teaching in the classroom of particular theories such as social justice and anti- oppressive practice can influence how students come to view the world it is not likely to impact upon their eventual practice unless it is reinforced in their field placements. Traditional settings reinforcing traditional interactions between students and consumers are not the means by which changes will occur. The blending together of the three learning modes of service learning, field placement and interprofessional education offer a chance to reinforce classroom teachings in a new way during the practicum experience

    Suicidal students' use of and attitudes to primary care prevention services

    Aim The aims of this study were to improve responses to students in distress and who are feeling suicidal, to help practitioners to increase their responsiveness to those at high risk of suicide and to develop effective responses to those affected by their deaths. The study sought to build a detailed picture of students’ patterns of service use. Background National suicide prevention strategies emphasise that suicide prevention requires the collaboration of a wide range of organisations. Among these, primary care services play a key role in relation to suicide prevention for young people in crisis. Methods This study, undertaken between 2004 and 2007, focused on 20 case studies of student suicide that took place in the United Kingdom between May 2000 and June 2005. It adopted a psychological autopsy approach to learn from a wide range of informants, including parents, friends, university staff and the records of coroners or procurator fiscals. Twenty families gave permission for their son’s or daughter’s death to be included in the study and agreed to participate in the study. Informants were interviewed in person and the data were analysed thematically. Analysis of the case study data suggested that in a number of cases students had failed to engage with services sufficiently early or in sufficient depth. Primary care practitioners need to be proactive in communicating concerns about vulnerable students to student support services. At local levels, collaboration between student support and National Health Service practitioners varied considerably and channels of communication need to be developed

    Validation of a wearable accelerometer-based activity monitor for use in future osteoporosis prevention programs

    Osteoporosis is considered a major public health problem worldwide. In order to develop effective physical exercise protocols for the prevention of osteoporosis and ensure skeletal integrity, the intensity of the exercise must be quantified objectively and accurately. This study aimed to assess the validity of a wearable accelerometer-based activity monitor for use in osteoporosis prevention programs. Eighteen premenopausal women completed an exercise protocol consisting of five countermovement jumps followed by four treadmill bouts at different speeds. Participants carried two pairs of accelerometers (Muvone® and ActiGraph GT3X+) located on the wrist and hip. Three types of analysis were performed: (1) association between measurements from both devices; (2) level of similarity in group estimates; and (3) evaluation of measurement bias. High to almost perfect correlations between the peak acceleration measured by both devices were found in all protocol tests (r = 0.607-0.975, p < 0.001). Differences in group estimates were non-significant and measurement bias between devices was below 6%. In conclusion, the validity of Muvone® to quantify acceleration has been tested at both the wrist and hip and could be used to assess mechanical loading during physical activities for the implementation of population-wide osteoporosis prevention programs

    Approximately Optimum Search Trees in External Memory Models

    We examine optimal and near optimal solutions to the classic binary search tree problem of Knuth. We are given a set of n keys (originally known as words), B_1, B_2, ..., B_n and 2n+1 frequencies. {p_1, p_2, ..., p_n} represent the probabilities of searching for each given key, and {q_0, q_1, ..., q_n} represent the probabilities of searching in the gaps between and outside of these keys. We have that Σ_{i=0}^n q_i + Σ_{i=1}^n p_i = 1. We also assume without loss of generality that q_{i-1}+p_i+q_i != 0 for any i ϵ {1,...,n}. The keys must make up the internal nodes of the tree while the gaps make up the leaves. Our goal is to construct a binary search tree such that expected cost of search is minimized. First, we re-examine an approximate solution of Guttler, Mehlhorn and Schneider which was shown to have a worst case bound of c * H + 2 where c >= 1/(H(1/3,2/3)) ~ 1.08, and H = Σ_{i=1}^{n} p_i * log_2(1/p_i) + Σ_{j=0}^{n} q_i * log_2(1/q_j) is the entropy of the distribution. We give an improved worst case bound on the heuristic of H+4. Next, we examine the optimum binary search tree problem under a model of external memory. We use the Hierarchical Memory Model of Aggarwal et al. The model has an unlimited number of registers, R_1, R_2, ... each with its own location in memory (a positive integer). We have a set of memory sizes m_1, m_2, ..., m_l which are monotonically increasing. Each memory level has a finite size except m_l which we assume has infinite size. Each memory level has an associated cost of access c_1, c_2, ..., c_l. We assume that c_1 < c_2 < ... < c_l. We propose two approximate solutions which run in O(n) time where n is the number of words in our data set. Using these methods, we improve upon a bound given in Thite's 2001 thesis under the related HMM_2 model in the approximate setting. We also examine the related problem of binary trees on multisets of probabilities where keys are unordered and we do not differentiate between which probabilities must be leaves, and which must be internal nodes. We provide a simple O(n log_2(n)) algorithm that is within an additive (n+1)(2n) of optimal on a multiset of n keys

    Human Life History Strategies: Calibrated to External or Internal Cues?

    Human life history (LH) strategies are theoretically regulated by developmental exposure to environmental cues that ancestrally predicted LH-relevant world states (e.g., risk of morbidity-mortality). Recent modeling work has raised the question of whether the association of childhood family factors with adult LH variation arises via (i) direct sampling of external environmental cues during development and/or (ii) calibration of LH strategies to internal somatic condition (i.e., health), which itself reflects exposure to variably favorable environments. The present research tested between these possibilities through three online surveys involving a total of over 26,000 participants. Participants completed questionnaires assessing components of self-reported environmental harshness (i.e., socioeconomic status, family neglect, and neighborhood crime), health status, and various LH-related psychological and behavioral phenotypes (e.g., mating strategies, paranoia, and anxiety), modeled as a unidimensional latent variable. Structural equation models suggested that exposure to harsh ecologies had direct effects on latent LH strategy as well as indirect effects on latent LH strategy mediated via health status. These findings suggest that human LH strategies may be calibrated to both external and internal cues and that such calibrational effects manifest in a wide range of psychological and behavioral phenotypes

    Addition of the apical oblique projection increases the detection of acute traumatic shoulder abnormalities in adults

    Purpose Plain radiographic evaluation of acute shoulder trauma in adults requires a minimum of two projections, commonly the anteroposterior (AP) and lateral scapular projections, with additional projections taken for diagnosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether the addition of the apical oblique (AO) projection to the AP and lateral scapular projections increases the number and/or alters the types of abnormalities detected in the examination of acute shoulder trauma. Methods Examinations of 56 adults who had undergone three-projection (AP, lateral scapular, AO) radiographic shoulder examination for acute trauma were allocated into two-projection (AP, lateral scapular) and three-projection cases and assessed by a radiologist. The differences in number and types of abnormalities between the two-projection and three-projection cases were quantified using the one-tailed t test and chi-square goodness-of-fit test, respectively. Results Test-retest reliability was moderate (intra-class correlation coefficient [95%CI], 0.56 [0.15 to 0.80]) for number, and almost perfect (kappa [95%CI], 0.94 [0.85 to 1.00]) for types, of abnormalities detected. There was a significant increase in the number of abnormalities detected across all three-projection versus two-projection cases (difference in means [95%CI], 0.20 [0.01 to 0.39]) and for fractures (difference in means [95%CI], 0.30 [0.11 to 0.49]), but no difference in the types of abnormalities detected (χ 2 = 4.7, p = 0.19). Conclusion This study suggests that adding the AO projection to two-projection examination of acute shoulder trauma increases the number of abnormalities detected; this has potential implications for patient management. Further research investigating differences in types of abnormalities detected between two-projection and three-projection cases is warranted

    Multiple achromatic plumage ornaments signal to multiple receivers

    We investigated whether achromatic plumage traits can act as multiple ornaments in an Arctic-breeding passerine, the snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis). Specifically, we examine whether multiple ornaments are providing multiple differing messages, are redundant, are unreliable signals of male quality, or are aimed at different receivers. We measured plumage reflectance and pigmentation patterns made conspicuous during male inter-and intrasexual displays that advertise different plumage regions. Our results indicate that although several aspects of male plumage may have redundant messages, different body regions appear aimed at different receivers. The wings of males-displayed primarily toward females during courtship-appear to indicate a pair\u27s future reproductive performance. Conversely, melanin-based plumage reflectance displayed during intrasexual threat displays provides information on territory features and a male\u27s capacity to defend it (i.e., territory size, territory quality, testosterone levels). Taken together, we suggest that snow buntings have multiple ornaments that provide information of differential importance in inter-versus intrasexual communication. This study demonstrates that achromatic plumage traits can serve in complex communication. © 2012 The Author

    Prolactin alters blood pressure by modulating the activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase

    Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that controls changes in the breast to enable milk production after the baby is born. In some mothers with pregnancy-related high blood pressure (BP), the concentration of prolactin in the blood is higher than normal, but whether this causes the high BP or is a consequence of it is uncertain. To answer this question, we have generated experimental mice that produce prolactin in the liver when we feed them a substance, indole-3-carbinol (IC3), that is found in broccoli. When fed normal chow, the mice are well, but, when fed IC3, they develop high BP and heart problems. This suggests that pregnant women with abnormally high prolactin levels may need special attention
