Varroa destructor reproduction and cell re-capping in mite-resistant Apis mellifera populations
Globalization has facilitated the spread of emerging pests such as the Varroa destructor mite, resulting in the near global distribution of the pest. In South African and Brazilian honey bees, mite-resistant colonies appeared within a decade; in Europe, mite-resistant colonies are rare, but several of these exhibited high levels of “re-capping” behavior. We studied re-capping in Varroa-naïve (UK/Australia) and Varroa-resistant (South Africa and Brazil) populations and found very low and very high levels, respectively, with the resistant populations targeting mite-infested cells. Furthermore, 54% of artificially infested A. m. capensis worker cells were removed after 10 days and 83% of the remaining infested cells were re-capped. Such targeted re-capping of drone cells did not occur. We propose that cell opening is a fundamental trait in mite-resistant populations and that re-capping is an accurate proxy for this behavior
Occurrence of deformed wing virus variants in the stingless Melipona subnitida and honey Apis mellifera bee populations in North Eastern Brazil
Deformed wing virus (DWV) is now a global insect pathogen. Brazilian stingless bees are a diverse group often managed in close proximity to honey bees. We investigated the prevalence and load of DWV in 33 stingless bees (Melipona subnitida) and 12 honey bees (Apis mellifera) colonies from NE Brazil. DWV was detected in all colonies with the A and C-variants dominating M. subnitida and A-variant in A. mellifera. Viral loads were 8.83E+07 and 7.19E+07 in M. subnitida and A. mellifera, respectively. On Fernando de Noronha island DWV is low (<1E+03) in honey bees, but we detected high loads (1.6E+08) in nine island M. subnitida colonies, indicating no viral spill-over of DWV has occurred during the past 34 years. Furthermore, the ubiquitous presence of the DWV-C variant in M. subnitida colonies, and rarity in A. mellifera, may suggest limited viral exchange between these two species
Randomized phase III trial of bleomycin, vindesine, mitomycin-C, and cisplatin (BEMP) versus cisplatin (P) in disseminated squamous-cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix: an EORTC Gynecological Cancer Cooperative Group study
PURPOSE: Three previous mitomycin-cisplatin-based chemotherapy trials conducted within the EORTC Gynecological Cancer Cooperative Group (GCCG) in patients with disseminated squamous-cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix (SCCUC) suggested that with such regimens a higher overall response rate and a higher complete response rate could be obtained compared to what might have been expected from cisplatin alone. In that respect the combination of bleomycin, vindesine (Eldesine), mitomycin C and cisplatin (BEMP) was the most promising. In the present study BEMP has been compared with the best single agent, cisplatin (P) in the expectation that improved response rates might translate into a better survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients were those with SCCUC and disseminated measurable disease outside previously irradiated areas, aged < or = 75 years, with a WHO performance status < or = 2 and adequate bone marrow, renal, hepatic and pulmonary function, who gave consent according to regulations followed in individual institutions. Patients were randomized to BEMP: E 3 mg/m2 day 1, P 50 mg/m2 day 1, B 15 mg (24-hour infusion) day 2-4 and M 8 mg/m2 (at alternate cycles), or P 50 mg/m2. The first four cycles were given every 3 weeks (induction phase). Subsequent cycles were given every four weeks (maintenance phase), during which B was deleted from BEMP (MEP). Patients failing on P could be treated with BEM. Of the 287 patients entered, 235 were eligible and 201 evaluable for response. RESULTS: BEMP induced a significantly higher response rate than P (42% vs. 25%, P = 0.006). There was no difference in complete response rate (11% vs. 7%). BEMP was significantly more toxic than P (+/- BEM), both with respect to hematologic and nonhematologic toxicities. After a median follow-up of 6.1 years, survival curves were not significantly different. Median progression-free survival and overall survival were 5.3 and 10.1 months with BEMP and 4.5 and 9.3 months with P (+/- BEM), respectively. In a multivariate analysis of prognostic factors for survival, a lower age (P = 0.003), a lower performance status (P = 0.0001) and a short (<1 year) interval since diagnosis (P = 0.0152) were all associated with an increased risk of dying. For progression-free survival, lower age, prior radiotherapy, locoregional involvement and no prior surgery were associated with a high risk. Treatment with BEMP or P had no significant impact on survival, but for progression-free survival there was a trend in favor of BEMP (P = 0.0893). Adjusting for prognostic factors did not change the effect of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Combination chemotherapy with BEMP produces more toxicity and more responses compared with cisplatin alone in patients with disseminated SCCUC, but this does not translate into a better survival. Therefore, in the palliative setting single-agent cisplatin should remain the standard therapy for these patients
Steel waste valorisation Steel Slag Waste Effect on Concrete Shrinkage
The concept of sustainability is becoming widespread every day in society, enterprises and institutions. Defining something as sustainable means that the relationship that it establishes with the environment does not represent an aggression or a threat to the latter neither when it is being utilized nor when it stops performing the function for which was designed. To make this happen we need a system in which the main priority is recycling. Everything mentioned above is related to what is called the “Circular Economy”.
Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. However, the production of portland cement, an essential constituent of concrete, leads to the release of significant amounts of CO22. The global production of concrete represents more than 5% of the anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide every year, mainly from the production of cement. The replacement of cement by fly ash and other industrial waste, such as steel slags, is a good example of how resource conservation can be improved and contamination can be reduced.
On the other hand, future trends are predicted to increase demand for steel worldwide. Mainly due to the expected improvement in the living standards and demands of underdeveloped populations. The steelmaking process produces a by-product called slag ranging from 10 to 15% per tonne of steel, where reuse is still reduced and much of it is deposited in a landfill.
This study presents laboratory test results on the total and autogenous shrinkage of medium strength concrete with partial replacement of cement by slags. Two different slags were tested, namely ladle furnaces slags (LFS) and ground granulated blast furnace slags (GGBFS). The results show the concrete shrinkage behavior when 25% of substitution are used. These data are important to predict future behavior and show that for the substitution dosages used there are no significant divergences for the shrinkage.Universidad de Málaga. Doxorubicin versus doxorubicin and cisplatin in endometrial carcinoma: definitive results of a randomised study (55872) by the EORTC Gynaecological Cancer Group
BACKGROUND: Combination chemotherapy yields better response rates which do not always lead to a survival advantage. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the reported differences in the efficacy and toxicity of monotherapy with doxorubicin (DOX) versus combination therapy with cisplatin (CDDP) in endometrial adenocarcinoma lead to significant advantage in favour of the combination. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients had histologically-proven advanced and/or recurrent endometrial adenocarcinoma and were chemo-naïve. Treatment consisted of either DOX 60 mg/m(2) alone or CDDP 50 mg/m2 added to DOX 60 mg/m2, every 4 weeks. RESULTS: A total of 177 patients were entered and median follow-up is 7.1 years. The combination DOX-CDDP was more toxic than DOX alone. Haematological toxicity consisted mainly of white blood cell toxicity grade 3 and 4 (55% versus 30%). Non-haematological toxicity consisted mainly of grade 3 and 4 alopecia (72% versus 65%) and nausea/vomiting (36 % versus 12%). The combination DOX-CDDP provided a significantly higher response rate than single agent DOX (P <0.001). Thirty-nine patients (43%) responded on DOX-CDDP [13 complete responses (CRs) and 26 partial responses (PRs)], versus 15 patients (17%) on DOX alone (8 CR and 7 PR). The median overall survival (OS) was 9 months in the DOX-CDDP arm versus 7 months in the DOX alone arm (Wilcoxon P = 0.0654). Regression analysis showed that WHO performance status was statistically significant as a prognostic factor for survival, and stratifying for this factor, treatment effect reaches significance (hazard ratio = 1.46, 95% confidence interval 1.05-2.03, P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: In comparison to single agent DOX, the combination of DOX-CDDP results in higher but acceptable toxicity. The response rate produced is significantly higher, and a modest survival benefit is achieved with this combination regimen, especially in patients with a good performance status
StemMapper: a curated gene expression database for stem cell lineage analysis.
Transcriptomic data have become a fundamental resource for stem cell (SC) biologists as well as for a wider research audience studying SC-related processes such as aging, embryonic development and prevalent diseases including cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Access and analysis of the growing amount of freely available transcriptomics datasets for SCs, however, are not trivial tasks. Here, we present StemMapper, a manually curated gene expression database and comprehensive resource for SC research, built on integrated data for different lineages of human and mouse SCs. It is based on careful selection, standardized processing and stringent quality control of relevant transcriptomics datasets to minimize artefacts, and includes currently over 960 transcriptomes covering a broad range of SC types. Each of the integrated datasets was individually inspected and manually curated. StemMapper's user-friendly interface enables fast querying, comparison, and interactive visualization of quality-controlled SC gene expression data in a comprehensive manner. A proof-of-principle analysis discovering novel putative astrocyte/neural SC lineage markers exemplifies the utility of the integrated data resource. We believe that StemMapper can open the way for new insights and advances in SC research by greatly simplifying the access and analysis of SC transcriptomic data. StemMapper is freely accessible at http://stemmapper.sysbiolab.eu
Nutritional Status among Portuguese and Turkish Older Adults Living in the Community: Relationships with Sociodemographic, Health and Anthropometric Characteristics
Malnutrition is widespread among older adults, and its determinants may differ between countries. We compared Portuguese and Turkish non-institutionalized older adults regarding nutritional status, sociodemographic, health and anthropometric characteristics and studied the relationships between nutritional status and those characteristics. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 430 Portuguese and 162 Turkish non-institutionalized older adults regarding sociodemographics, health conditions, the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA-FF) and anthropometry. Turkish older adults were more likely to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition and had lower average BMI but a higher calf circumference. A higher proportion of the Portuguese sample had tooth loss, diabetes, hypertension, oncologic diseases, kidney diseases, osteoarticular problems or eye problems, while less had anemia. A better nutritional status (higher MNA-FF score) was found among the Portuguese, males, people using dentures, those without tooth loss, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, anemia or oncological diseases and was related to younger age, higher BMI and a higher calf circumference. Malnutrition and its risk were higher among older adults from Turkey, despite Portuguese older adults presenting a higher prevalence of chronic diseases. Being female, older age, tooth loss, hypertension, anemia, CVD or oncological disorders and having a lower BMI or CC were associated with higher rates of malnutrition among older adults from Portugal and Turkey

Medidas legais brasileiras como estratégia de coibir o ato de dirigir após ingestão de bebida alcoólica
Laws against the conjunction of alcoholic beverages and steering wheel are designed to protect life. Which is clearly jeopardized when this conjunction is realized. New laws were created to adapt the traffic code to today. Thus become even more effective with the passing of time. The last law Breathalyzer was created to punish offenders more harshly drivers in a quest to reduce these offenses that cause much damage to the whole society. Because the new law is more severe, there are more prisons, duly punishing such offenders. In view of a more strict law, the police are mobilizing in order to punish the offenders. Thus leaving the streets safer.
