A supercritical Sobolev type inequality driven by the -Hessian equation
Our main purpose in this paper is to establish a supercritical Sobolev type
inequality for the -Hessian operator acting on
, the space of radially symmetric -admissible
functions on the unit ball . Besides, we prove both the
existence of optimizers for the associated variational problem and the
solvability of a related -Hessian equation with supercritical growth
On a Sobolev-type inequality and its minimizers
Critical Sobolev-type inequality for a class of weighted Sobolev spaces on
the entire space is established. We also investigate the existence of extremal
function for the associated variational problem. As an application, we prove
the existence of a weak solution for a general class of critical semilinear
elliptic equations related to the polyharmonic operator
Visualizing test diversity to support test optimisation
Diversity has been used as an effective criteria to optimise test suites for
cost-effective testing. Particularly, diversity-based (alternatively referred
to as similarity-based) techniques have the benefit of being generic and
applicable across different Systems Under Test (SUT), and have been used to
automatically select or prioritise large sets of test cases. However, it is a
challenge to feedback diversity information to developers and testers since
results are typically many-dimensional. Furthermore, the generality of
diversity-based approaches makes it harder to choose when and where to apply
them. In this paper we address these challenges by investigating: i) what are
the trade-off in using different sources of diversity (e.g., diversity of test
requirements or test scripts) to optimise large test suites, and ii) how
visualisation of test diversity data can assist testers for test optimisation
and improvement. We perform a case study on three industrial projects and
present quantitative results on the fault detection capabilities and redundancy
levels of different sets of test cases. Our key result is that test similarity
maps, based on pair-wise diversity calculations, helped industrial
practitioners identify issues with their test repositories and decide on
actions to improve. We conclude that the visualisation of diversity information
can assist testers in their maintenance and optimisation activities
A holonic approach to dynamic manufacturing scheduling
Manufacturing scheduling is a complex combinatorial problem, particularly in distributed and dynamic environments. This paper presents a holonic approach to manufacturing scheduling, where the scheduling functions are distributed by several entities, combining their calculation power and local optimization capability. In this scheduling and control approach, the objective is to achieve fast and dynamic re-scheduling using a scheduling mechanism that evolves dynamically to combine centralized and distributed strategies, improving its responsiveness to emergence, instead of the complex and optimized scheduling algorithms found in traditional approaches
Fish brain development in a changing ocean
Unravelling how marine species invest in brain tissues (or brain regions) matching the fitness-relevant cognitive demands dictated by a changing environment is a priority in climate change-related (ocean warming and acidification) research. Within this context, this dissertation aimed to assess the combined effects of ocean warming (Δ 4 °C) and acidification (Δ 700 μatm pCO2 and Δ 0.4 pH) in the brain development (brain/body mass ratio and brain macro-region growth) of several juvenile fish species from different climate regions. Namely: three species adapted to a more stable (tropical) environment (clown anemonefish Amphiprion ocellaris, orchid dottyback Pseudochromis fridmani and neon goby Elacatinus oceanops), and other three adapted to a less stable (more seasonal; temperate) environment (seabream Diplodus sargus, flatfish Solea senegalensis and meagre Argyrosomus regius). The results show that the temperate species used in this study are only affected by ocean acidification in both total brain and specific brain regions, while the used tropical species are affected by ocean acidification, ocean warming and also by the interaction of ocean warming and ocean acidification. In fact, both total brain and every brain-region except for Telencephalon are affected by future conditions of ocean warming and ocean acidification differently according to each species. The lack of responses to ocean warming by the temperate species is here attributed to the widespread latitudinal distribution of those species, and thus the adaptation to a wider temperature range than tropical species. Curiously, all the significant interactions between the two studied stressors are antagonistic interactions with a cross-tolerance mechanism, meaning that under those interactions, the brain weight is closer to control levels than under each of the stressors separately. Possible behavioural and ecological implications of those results are also discussed. Despite the distinct dichotomic pattern between temperate and tropical habitats, the results among fish species and specific brain macro-regions do not exhibit a subjacent pattern. These different results highlight the idea of species-specific phenotypic responses to these climate change-related stressors
Processing of Rainfall Time Series Data in the State of Rio de Janeiro
The goal was to perform the filling, consistency and processing of the rainfall time series data from 1943 to 2013 in five regions of the state. Data were obtained from several sources (ANA, CPRM, INMET, SERLA and LIGHT), totaling 23 stations. The time series (raw data) showed failures that were filled with data from TRMM satellite via 3B43 product, and with the climatological normal from INMET. The 3B43 product was used from 1998 to 2013 and the climatological normal over the 1947- 1997 period. Data were submitted to descriptive and exploratory analysis, parametric tests (Shapiro-Wilks and Bartlett), cluster analysis (CA), and data processing (Box Cox) in the 23 stations. Descriptive analysis of the raw data consistency showed a probability of occurrence above 75% (high time variability). Through the CA, two homogeneous rainfall groups (G1 and G2) were defined. The group G1 and G2 represent 77.01% and 22.99% of the rainfall occurring in SRJ, respectively. Box Cox Processing was effective in stabilizing the normality of the residuals and homogeneity of variance of the monthly rainfall time series of the five regions of the state. Data from 3B43 product and the climatological normal can be used as an alternative source of quality data for gap filling

Estimate for concentration level of the Adams functional and extremals for Adams-type inequality
This paper is mainly concerned with the existence of extremals for the Adams
inequality. We first establish an upper bound for the classical Adams
functional along of all concentrated sequences in
, in particular in
, where is a smooth bounded domain in
Euclidean -space. Secondly, based on the Concentration-compactness
alternative due to Do \'{O} and Macedo, we prove the existence of extremals for
the Adams inequality under Navier boundary conditions for second order
derivatives at least for higher dimensions when is an Euclidean ball
