Influence of grape juice extraction methods on basic analytical parameters

    Get PDF
Currently, for monitoring the ripening of grape berries, different devices are used to produce the juices to be analysed. Crushing the berries is a key step that determines the quantity of juice extracted and may impact it composition. The effect of different devices on analytical parameters of the musts produced were compared in this study. Samples from four grape varieties ('Cabernet-Sauvignon', 'Ekigaïna', 'Marselan' and 'Vermentino'), showing a variability of berry size and precocity, were crushed using six different devices (ASieves, Bag mixer®, Crusher, Manual, TPress and Blender). Whatever the pressing equipment, sugar concentrations of the must were not modified by the extraction method, unlike other parameters. pH and titratable acidity were slightly impacted by the crushing method without changing the ranking of the varieties. However, potassium concentrations were more impacted by the pressing method. Differences in mechanical forces applied to skins and seeds according to the pressing equipment used may release more or less potassium. This study clearly discarded a complete grinding of the samples for grape ripening monitoring: this method strongly modified the potassium content and, consequently, the pH and the titratable acidity of the musts

The K2-ESPRINT Project. I. Discovery of the Disintegrating Rocky Planet K2-22b with a Cometary Head and Leading Tail

We present the discovery of a transiting exoplanet candidate in the K2 Field-1 with an orbital period of 9.1457 hr: K2-22b. The highly variable transit depths, ranging from \sim0\% to 1.3\%, are suggestive of a planet that is disintegrating via the emission of dusty effluents. We characterize the host star as an M-dwarf with Teff3800T_{\rm eff} \simeq 3800 K. We have obtained ground-based transit measurements with several 1-m class telescopes and with the GTC. These observations (1) improve the transit ephemeris; (2) confirm the variable nature of the transit depths; (3) indicate variations in the transit shapes; and (4) demonstrate clearly that at least on one occasion the transit depths were significantly wavelength dependent. The latter three effects tend to indicate extinction of starlight by dust rather than by any combination of solid bodies. The K2 observations yield a folded light curve with lower time resolution but with substantially better statistical precision compared with the ground-based observations. We detect a significant "bump" just after the transit egress, and a less significant bump just prior to transit ingress. We interpret these bumps in the context of a planet that is not only likely streaming a dust tail behind it, but also has a more prominent leading dust trail that precedes it. This effect is modeled in terms of dust grains that can escape to beyond the planet's Hill sphere and effectively undergo `Roche lobe overflow,' even though the planet's surface is likely underfilling its Roche lobe by a factor of 2.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures. Pinning and switching of magnetic moments in bilayer graphene

We examine the magnetic properties of the localized states induced by lattice vacancies in bilayer graphene with an unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation. We show that with realistic values of the parameters and for experimentally accessible gate voltages we can have a magnetic switching between an unpolarized and a fully polarized system.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Size of the Vela Pulsar's Radio Emission Region: 500 km

We use interstellar scattering of the Vela pulsar to determine the size of its emission region. From interferometric phase variations on short baselines, we find that radio-wave scattering broadens the source by 3.4+/-0.3 milliarcseconds along the major axis at position angle 81+/-3 degrees. The ratio of minor axis to major axis is 0.51+/-0.03. Comparison of angular and temporal broadening indicates that the scattering material lies in the Vela-X supernova remnant surrounding the pulsar. From the modulation of the pulsar's scintillation on very short baselines, we infer a size of 500 km for the pulsar's emission region. We suggest that radio-wave refraction within the pulsar's magnetosphere may plausibly explain this size.Comment: 14 pages, includes 2 figures. Interaction energy functional for lattice density functional theory: Applications to one-, two- and three-dimensional Hubbard models

The Hubbard model is investigated in the framework of lattice density functional theory (LDFT). The single-particle density matrix γij\gamma_{ij} with respect the lattice sites is considered as the basic variable of the many-body problem. A new approximation to the interaction-energy functional W[γ]W[\gamma] is proposed which is based on its scaling properties and which recovers exactly the limit of strong electron correlations at half-band filling. In this way, a more accurate description of WW is obtained throughout the domain of representability of γij\gamma_{ij}, including the crossover from weak to strong correlations. As examples of applications results are given for the ground-state energy, charge-excitation gap, and charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model in one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices. The performance of the method is demonstrated by comparison with available exact solutions, with numerical calculations, and with LDFT using a simpler dimer ansatz for WW. Goals and limitations of the different approximations are discussed.Comment: 25 pages and 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
